Everyone looks forward to the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar dela Hoya fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas (to start at 8 am Manila time on Sunday, 7 December). Again, for the Philippines, everything will be at a standstill. There will be very little action in the streets. (It’s like when a cricket championship game happens between the Indians or the Pakistanis. I have witnessed how empty the otherwise crowded streets were, where there was rejoicing in one side and a feeling of general sadness in the other side. Unfortunately, I was in the losing side at that time, I was in Pakistan, such that their sadness was so infectious.)
Most of everyone will either in places where live viewing of the fight is available, in private places with pay-per-view, or in people’s houses for the delayed telecast. Even churches will have less churchgoers during the scheduled viewing. And most often, as in the past, crime rate will be at its lowest. This is the effect of a Manny Pacquiao fight in the country—at least the politicians will be quiet for a while, no messing up, no controversies, no bickerings (lol). Even the attention of our compatriots abroad will be focused on the fight, some will even go to Las Vegas to watch it. It will again be a big sweep for for telecoms with texts and calls causing a huge traffic. Many will go online to know the latest happening, punch for punch.
A lot of us were not happy about the pairing, some of our government authorities even wanted to stop the fight. Let me not go into technicalities, I leave that to the experts. But now, we are hoping against hope that Manny Pacquiao will win, despite the fact that De La Hoya seems to have an advantage, though in the most recent news, the odds on Manny Pacquiao improve as fight nears.
Manny Pacquiao may be an underdog, but he always gives it all—that’s an assurance. For him, win or lose, he gets the pot money. But still, as in his song, “Para Sa ‘Yo ang Laban na ‘To”, he has always dedicated his fight, his efforts, blood sweat and tears to us his countrymen. For us Filipinos, his winning will mean a lot. It is one of the rare occasions that Filipinos are one. It will bolster the Filipino morale, especially during these hard times. His losing will be a bitter pill to swallow, for a while we may be sad, yet as in reality, life goes on and on.
To you, Manny, our prayers that you will not be hurt, and thank you for fighting for the country. Win or lose you will still be in our hearts as the man who has given and continues to give it all.
Para Sa ‘Yo Ang Laban Na ‘To
Gagawin ko ang lahat para sa’yo
Kung ito ang dahilan upang magkasundo tayo
Ito ang tanging paraan na naisip ko
Upang magkaisa damdamin mo’t …damdamin ko
[Chorus]
Para sa ‘yo ang laban na ‘to
Para sa ‘yo ang laban na ‘to… ohhh.
Hindi ako susuko..isisigaw ko sa mundo
Para sa ‘yo ang laban na ‘to
[Adlib]
Kahit buhay ko’y itataya sa ‘yo
Ipagtatanggol kita gamit ay aking kamao
Ito ang tanging paraan na naisip ko
Upang magkaisa kapwa ko… pilipino
[Chorus]
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to… ohhh.

[Chorus]
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to… ohhh.
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to
Para sa ‘yo (para sa’yo) ang laban na ‘to… ohhh.
Hindi ako susuko..isisigaw ko sa mundo
