A lot of people have criticized and made fun about the way Manny Pacquiao spoke (and continues to speak) in English–from interviews, to speeches, to commercials, and even the way he talks with people. I never saw him wince a bit when he talked, no matter who the biggies were who talked to him or interviewed him–such confidence. Why won’t he ooze with confidence? He is a CHAMP in his own right, known not only in his country, but the world over. In the field of sports, and entertainment at that, he is now known as the number 1 pound for pound boxer in the planet (now elevated to AN ALL-TIME GREAT). Even Hollywood stars watch his fights.
How come the international contestants in beauty contests who rattle out their speeches in poor English (some even have interpreters) are not laughed at? Some even find them cute. What a shame–some people still could not see through what Manny Pacquiao has brought to the country. Some people even hate him like shit. Oh well, to each his or her own, this is a free country. Bottomline is, the Pacman has brought pride to our country many times over. He’s got talent, he’s got the GIFT from the Lord above, that he makes the best use of. He is serous with his trade–he has discipline. He has oodles and oodles of money–a given fact. He is looked up by many as their inspiration, and for several times, he has diverted our attention from the national scandals of our politicos and big businessmen robbing a lot of people of their hard earned money. During his fights, everything, including crime is at a standstill.
Manny Pacquiao is proof that you do not have to speak perfect English to be a CHAMP! He has proven a lot, more than anyone has ever done so. Could he be an exception? There are lots of people in our coutry today who because of lack of education, cannot even speak a word in English. Look back many years ago–even the ordinary man in the streets could speak at least basic English. Who to blame? Well, you know who. Not all people can be a Manny Pacquiao. Maybe, there could be a few who will become successful in their chosen fields. What is important is to try our best in whatever endeavor we take. And for the many–stop making poverty an excuse to failure and doing bad things in life.
Thank you Manny Pacquiao–you are a joy, an inspiration to many. You make us, Filipinos proud! At least this time, I agree with PGMA for declaring Friday, 8 May 2009 as a national day of celebration for Manny Pacquiao’s victory,

Very well said. There’s a great improvement in his English compared to before when he had a bit of trouble understanding the interviewer. He’s still the champ no matter what tongue he speaks. He makes his statements on the ring not on interviews.

Great points, Tita. I do laugh at the jokes that poke fun at his English, but for me, it doesn’t really matter because after all, he’s a boxer, not a host or actor.
As for pageant contestants, I prefer our Filipina contestants to be at least decent and sensible in speaking in English, because they’re supposed to be smart.

His poor English doesn’t bother Americans. They are very understanding. Celebrities watched him in his latest fight, and they even approached him. Manny Pacquiao is one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World – May 11, 2009 issue.

I like that he was interviewed in CNN and everywhere else and deadma siya with his accent and everything. He’s self-assured without coming across as cocky. On the other hand, I don’t think there would be anything wrong if he chose to answer in Tagalog. I mean, let the world respect our native language and the beauty of how it sounds. The other Mexican boxers (plus beauty contestants from Venezuela) always answer in Spanish anyway. No one has ever forced them to speak in English if they can’t.

Some kase sobra naman manlait. Ang maaskit pa minsan kababayan pa natin mismo. :/
You got a point dun sa ibang mga contestants sa beauty pageant. Kung sila nga may interpreter pa, eh bilib parin ang iba sa kanila, edi mas lalau dpat kay Pacman kase nageefort sya dba? And I think his english naman is not that bad diba??
Mabuhay ka Pacman!
