The Magical Threat

10-yr old Alan, Jr. was the happiest when I announced my retirement 4 months ago. He must have observed at that time that my working hours were longer, travels more frequent, including Wednesday or Friday nights out with friends, and nights out with his dad. I would even miss out on important occasions like birthdays, school meetings, school fairs because of the travels. That was months ago. Now that I am home, I guess I have now more than made up for lost time.
Saturday morning, there was not much to do, with most kids still asleep.
“Mcbreakfast?”, I asked. He said he was not hungry.
Almost an hour afterwards, “Rustan’s supermarket?”. He said he had not taken a bath yet.
Oh, well, I told myself, I have 7 kids, and not even one would come with me. Was I pining for attention?
“Ok, then, why don’t we take a long ride, this time surprise Dad at the airport and pick him up.” He was tinkering with the laptop, surfing from his own website which he updated last December, to Pokemon figures, to a new found computer game, to Lightning McQueen to an exotic car dealer, not paying attention to me at all. Again, he said he has not taken a bath yet.
In frustration, I blurted out, “Why don’t I ask around and try to adopt someone. Someone who will join me for McBreakfast, someone who will come with me to the supermarket, someone who will accompany me to the airport, just someone.”
He stopped whatever it was he was doing, with a different look on his face, was it fear? and announced, “I am taking a bath now! Hot water, please”.
Voila! I found the magic words, though I never thought he would take it seriously.
We happily went to Rustan’s for our groceries, drove-through McDonald’s, took a side trip to Nayong Pilipino (all I could show him was the aging miniature of Mayon Volcano, so sad when years ago Nayong Pilipino was a showcase), and fetched his Dad at the airport. Except for school, he has been with me wherever I went the past few days.
Up to when, I wonder, could I use those magical words.
Alan Jr. has his own website. You may view it here.

Hehehe. Too funny Dine, if only slightly bittersweet. I will not dare to pretend to know anything about raising kids. I have none, and at the moment no plans for little ones any time soon. I do however know one of yours, pretty well I’d like to believe, and he turned out ok.
how cute . I remember how my then 10 year old daughter started her website.
wow, that’s a very creative way of getting his attention.
Hahaha! Nice one, Dine! Alan, Jr. is such a softie when it comes to mom
(kaya lang meron munang threat hehehe)
Enjoy your days with him!
Oh and I will link you up if it’s okay with you…
Have a nice day, sexy mom!
Adam – you sure he turned out ok? lol for my dear jangelo!
noemi – i would like to see more 10yo’s blogs, if only to know what is in their innocent loving minds.
sasha – sometimes threats do work wonders, and they have to be magical threats, not harsh ones (or do you think the threat was quiet harsh to A, Jr?). and thanks for the link! reminds me to organize mine.
Looking at Alan Jr. reminds me so much of my youngest brother. And he’s growing up now to be a teenager, no more a cutesy boy.
(:
Hehe, places that a “magical threat” can take you. :p
My cousins from the US are afraid of one very simply threat: Them being shipped here to the Philippines. My tito says the threat works wonders.
Nice anecdote Dine. I wish I could do what you do and retire early. It would be best to spend quality time with my kiddies. God bless!
so it’s like 7th Heaven for you, heh!
i, too, came from a family of seven. Not too easy on my parents and we’re always in need but we managed well
he’s very adorable li’l man!
Dine, I went to his site before. I find it amusing of the things he write. It made me chuckle…sooo cute, I thought.
It took a while though to get his attention which is normal for kids…hehe.
as much as possible, hindi ko hahayaan na mamiss ako ni Baby Sam ko.
ahaha..
!
parehas sila ng anak kong babae.. me suhol muna .. haha..! its cute di ba? lalo na pag me lambing!
Lucky boy to have you for a mom.
Ako naman gusto ko sumama, pero hindi mo naman ako ginigising at iniinvite. Huhuhuhu
oh, BA - McD and gimmick anytime! as long as you wake up early. love ya!
Hala, nang-gulang ang magulang.
I really like the way we tend to know which buttons to press with our youg ‘uns.
Nah, it’s a magical threat just like what Shari said hehehe
