Alan and Dine Racoma—married 29 years, blessed with 7 children, a daughter-in-law, 2 grandchildren (another one soon) and an angel in heaven…and life goes on…
This is almost half a lifetime, if I am to live till I am 60 (9 years from now). How fast time flies. Many years ago, I was just a young lass at 19, a med tech intern in UST when I met a young guy of 24. That was my first party (imagine!) with an excuse from the Dominican sisters where I was dorming, that I had a 24-hour shift in the hospital. Two days later he became my boyfriend, then two years later, I was a bride at 21. The rest is history.
What is the secret to a long lasting marriage? Foremost is God being the center of our lives. All else follows if the faith is strong.
I also remember somebody advising me during the early part of my marriage that in a relationship, there should always be someone who is level headed at the moment, someone who is humble at the moment, someone who is cool at the moment, someone who is loving at the moment, someone who is understanding at the moment, to strike a balance. This has become my mantra. “At the moment” means a time when there seems to be a turmoil, a time when there is chaos, a time when there is a misunderstanding, a time when one is angry, a time when one is hurt, and many more similar situations that happen in any marriage.
What happens when both are angry? When both are hurting? When both let pride rule? When both are in the verge of giving up? When both feel like it’s the end of everything? At least in these situations, let not both parties be on the same side. It does not necessarily mean that it will always have to be the wife or the husband who will be on the cooler side all the time. It’s a give and take set up.
On our 29th wedding anniversary, let me thank the good Lord for the abundant blessings He has bestowed on my family, same too for the trials and struggles that have come our way that have made our family stronger. For the gift of family...for the gift of friends…for the gift of love…for the gift of health…and many more.
Here’s sharing with you the song that was played during my first dance:
I NEVER DREAMED SOMEONE LIKE YOU COULD LOVE SOMEONE LIKE ME
Could it be that the lady is me
In the photograph
I’m afraid ‘cause it feels too good
And I want it too bad
It’s just not true
Couldn’t ask for anyone more than you
Because you look at me
As though I’m beautiful
Could it be that you want me
I never dreamed someone like you
Could want someone like me
I’m not sure but the more that it’s real
The more that it’s right, oh what a night
It’s as though we’ve been lovers
All of our lives
There must be a God
Could it be that he’s heard me at last
Because you look at me
As though I’m beautiful
Could it be that lady in me
I never dreamed someone like you
Could want someone like me
All the pain and the pleasure’s the same
It goes so fast
I’m the girl with the strawberry hair
In the photograph
So come on, let’s dance
Let me have it while I have the chance
‘Cause there’s another world
Where there are other girls
But tonight there’s only me
I never dreamed someone like you
Could love someone like me

I’m happy for you Ms. Dine and your family.
My parents have been married for 25 years already and I see a similar “formula” they applied for their marriage to last that long.

Congratulations on your 29th is in order, then Dine!
We are so blessed and we have God to thank for.
We just had our 26th too, (1/14) and we don’t sweat on small stuff.

To Mr and Mrs Alan Racoma,
Congratulations! For the short time that I have known Ms Dine, I have always admired the closeness their family has. One time, I called at their house and her husband answered, I overheard him say, “Sweetheart, for you”... Ang sweet no
I find it so sweet lang talaga (especially yun tone ng voice, super lambing) na after all those many many years, you can feel how much they love each other.

Happy anniversary! I always open your site daily although i seldom leave comment( i think this is my 2nd time to comment). Your stories are inspiring. By the way, what dorm did you stay in during your Uste years? I lived with the Dominican sisters at Sta. Catalina by Gov. Forbes when I was in college and during my Graduate studies in UST. Those were the days!
Have a good day.
Sexy Mom: thanks, Emily
yes, those were the days! small world—i lived in Santa Catalina College from 1974-1977 too, 3rd floor, new building.
now, you make me reminisce…
