Happy Birthday to Me!

Today is my birthday. I am 49 years old. Happy birthday to me! Yes, dear readers, you are not mistaken. I am greeting myself, and doing so makes me happy. It gives me satisfaction. I am telling everyone that today is my birthday, short of reminding my friends that it is my special day. Weird, others may think. But this is me, the real me. The cheerful me.
The bonus is that whatever good wishes I receive today, I am returning them back. Isn’t it agood idea? Not only do I get birthday cheers and good wishes, and prayers. The greeter also gets the same cheers, good wishes and prayers. Isn’t it fun and more meaningful?
Funny how years, ago, it was difficult for me to divulge my age. When people asked, I would always say, “Next question, please”. Insecurities, perhaps? Not anymore now. I remember one birthday many years ago, I was telling everyone that I was 35 years old. Through all the days in that birthday week, I really thought I was 35. Later in the evening, I realized that I was only 34 years old. I was so delighted.
During my 40the birthday, I was grumbling, feigning unhappiness, telling my kids that I was getting old. “Imagine, I am 40 years old”, I was telling them, pleading for reassurance maybe. One of my kids, trying to cheer me up said, “But mom, you don’t look 40 years old. You look as if you are only 39!”. Oh, well, anything to cheer me up.
If I wanted flowers on my birthday, or any day for that matter, I tell my husband, kids or friends. I am not one who sulks just because my silent message does not come across. Then I would not say “He doesn’t bring me flowers anymore (at all). Rhodora, take note. Still if I do not get them, I buy from the nearest flower shop. Crazy, you may say. But this is me, the real me. The cheerful me.
I didn’t ask for flowers today. Yesterday’s flowers are still all over the house. Last Christmas I told myself that since I could not buy the MacBook that I wanted, I would buy it on my birthday. Some small hitches, I am not buying today. Give or take a few weeks, and I will have it soon. There are still many tomorrows. Even if I am not able to have the MacBook on my birthday, I am not disappointed. This is me, the cheerful me.
Today is the first birthday I am celebrating as part of the blogosphere. Son, J Angelo, posted my first article on 8 November 2006. Three months thereafte, I have gained a lot of friends (you are so dear to me now), I have shared my experiences with people I do not even know, and hopefully have touched their lives. My Wordpress ShortStat says I have had 31,230 hits, with 7,298 hits as unique. Oh well, I do not know what it means, but it makes me happy. This is me, the real me. The cheerful me.
Today is also the first birthday in my early retirement. I am home now, my family foremost is happy for my physical presence. I feel so blessed, my family is so blessed. And for that I am thankful to the good Lord. Everyday is a miracle. He has taken care of all our needs. He will grant all my heart’s desire I know. What more can I wish for?

Well for me the only birthdays I’m looking forwrds are my niece and two other nephews and my brothers’ grandchildren. butmost of all my niece Bibs, which will be celebrating her l8 in July 6, 2008 and we may, if circumstances allow, celebrate it in Cainta, where they grow up. They just move to California in Dec. 2005. Again happy 49th and more happy birthdays…
