Finding My Niche

finding-nemo.jpgIt has been almost a month since my retirement (early retirement, I mean). Gosh, time runs so fast. After 27 years in the corporate world, the last 10 years or so, in a fast paced, stressful, though fulfilling world, interrupted by official travels from one part of the world to another, here I am, in a world completely different – HOME SWEET HOME, at least for now.

27 years working full time has brought me to different dimensions, getting married, bearing 7 beautiful children (4 boys aged 26, 18, 17 and 10 and 3 girls, aged 23, 15 and 13), a daughter-in-law, and 2 granddaughters (aged 3 and 1-1/2).

These years have enriched me with experiences and lessons learned, enough to share with you, dear readers. Surprising, but since retirement, I never had the chance to ask myself “what to do?”. There have always been a hundred and one things catching my attention, a son or daughter waiting to be heard (sometimes at the same time), a mother needing something for this or that, a husband …, suddenly granddaughters…., friends calling, bills to pay. This is entirely different! But I am not complaining. Later did I realize that there were so many things that I missed in life. Travel during work has been very satisfying, but there were times when there was no choice but to forgo birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, family milestones, weekends, even church. That is all past now (not a tinge of guilt), this is the time to make up to family and friends, and to make up to my God. As they say, now I have the time to stop, smell the flowers, appreciate the finer, nicer things in life. Now I have the time to start the day with church. Oh, what luxury!

But this does not necessarily mean stopping for just that – life is a continuous learning and earning process. My eldest son’s work has always fascinated me. After 2 years as economist with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and 1-1/2 year with an IT firm, he finally decided to RETIRE! Retire, at age 25 with 2 kids, I asked him? It’s his life, I, as a mother, could only watch from the outside, could only advise, and the worse case scenario, as what most Filipino families would do, support them (arrrgh!). But the worst case scenario didn’t come. In fact, during the first few weeks of my retirement, while waiting for my pension to be processed, I would always run to him to borrow some money. What does he do? He calls himself a “professional blogger”. a “tech evangelist”, a “media consultant”.

How he does this, I will share with in the next blogs. This could be an eye opener for you, the new graduates, the retired, who would like to earn money from home. I plan to replicate his feat. My first step was to watch him work, as goodwill watch his 2 kids while he works, join him in his meetings (I once joined an e-commerce group, a group of enterprising young men and women, who earn a lot of money, based from home), read his works, browse the internet. Now I have the feel of it. In fact, I have already come up with the bright exciting idea, which is now in the making. The website will be launched very soon.

Next is to start a blog. Through this blog I will share with you, dear readers, as I mentioned earlier, experiences and lessons learned through the years. I am yet to find my “niche”. meaning, the specific theme I’m targeting. so I will be writing on a wide range of topics, tidbits, tips, reviews, income-generating ideas, the joy of parenting, how to connect with our children, the internet, even recipes, which I promise will be of interest. When I run of topics to write about, maybe then, I will be able to find my “niche”. So, I invite you, dear readers, to join me in “finding my niche”, and welcome to my blog.
