On Sunday, 22 February @ 5pm PST or 8pm EST in America, 9am in Manila on Monday, 23 February will be the airing live of the 81st Annual Academy Awards or The Oscars.
I am rooting for Slumdog Millionaire, which has been nominated for 10 awards: Achievement in Cinematography, Achievement in Directing, Achievement in Film Editing, Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Best Motion Picture of the Year, Achievement in Sound Editing, Achievement in Sound Mixing, and Adapted Screenplay. Slumdog Millionaire already won five Critics’ Choice Awards, four Golden Globes, and seven BAFTA Awards,
Two weeks back, daughter Monica has been bugging me to watch the movie, Slumdog Millionaire, but I was not really interested and I did not have the time. I told her I didn’t want to watch a sad movie, this time as sometimes they come to be depressing. Watching the news in between is sad enough, what more with a full length movie. But she was insistent, after watching it with Lucky, she was able to convince me, and we watched it together.
Just 15 minutes into the movie, and I began to fall in love with it. Not only did it bring memories of the game show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, it also brought back memories of my trips to India. It was as if I was there, touring Taj Mahal, being in the slums, mixing with the locals, conversing with the young kids, going to their shops, and many more. It also showed similarities between the syndicates who capitalize on beggars. Have we not heard of local syndicates bringing hordes of young boys and girls and old people to beg in the streets? Such grim reality.
It is also a story of intense love—a love lost and regained but the difficult way, a story of brothers and friends, and a story of how even the poor love game shows. Slumdog Millionaire is a story of so many chapters, each chapter interwoven with each others.
If you have not watched Slumdog Millionaire, it’s not yet too late. You will not regret it. As for me, I heart Slumdog Millionaire, from the story, to cinematography, music, Jamal (who they say looks like son, Vince) and Latika.

I enjoyed Slumdog millionaire. It’s different from all the rest we’ve seen in a few years.
