Charlotte’s Web

charlotte.jpgCharlotte’s Web is just one of the books lying in the bookshelf, and it not in my family’s list of “to see movies”. Yesterday, my 2 girls did not have classes (President’s Day in Miriam College, I was told), and by the time BA and Alan Jr. came from school, we all have decided to go to Gateway Mall in Araneta Center. Maybe, because of the just concluded holiday spendings and gifts recently bought (an electric guitar for Pauline, violin for Alan, Jr, and Angela’s first Chucks, all bought a week ago), the kids didn’t ask to buy this or that. All they asked for were bars and bags of chocolates, and to either watch a movie or go to the arcade.

X44 was out of the question, while Babel and Apocalypto were too heavy for kids and young teenagers. Even if we thought that Charlotte’s Web was too juvenile for most of us, except for 10-year old Alan Jr., we decided to watch it. What a pleasant surprise we all had.

Charlotte’s Web was a good find – enchanting, delightful, picture perfect, heart warming, innocence, refreshing, all “feel good” words. It is a story of friendship, fulfilling promises, and hope. It tells the story of Fern (played by Dakota Fanning of I Am Sam fame, the young girl who prevents her farmer father (Kevin Anderson) from disposing of the runt-of-the-litter piglet, whom she named Wilbur. Fern finds an adoptive home for Wilbur over in the Zuckerman barn, where the naive Wilbur ultimately learns from the other animals that a spring pig doesn’t usually get a chance to see the first snow of winter – it is brought to the smoke house and becomes the family’s dinner on Christmas day. Wilbur finds an ally in Charlotte, the barn’s socially outcast resident spider. Wilbur is seeking nothing short of a miracle, and ultimately he secures one with the help of the articulate and artistic webmistress. And the story goes on and on, in the end, Wilbur would live past many winters.

Voice over was done by Julia Roberts as Charlotte, Steve Buscemi (a perfect Templeton the Rat), John Cleese (an acerbic sheep), Oprah Winfrey (a chatty goose) and 10-year-old Dominic Scott Kay in the key role of Wilbur, the wide-eyed spring pig.

Reminds me of the movie series, “Babe”. The farm animals are computer generated but they look so much alive and exquisitely well kept, one would wonder if they have gone for pet boarding. Try to catch it this weekend with the kids, and you won’t be sorry, as the movie version is still much better than watching it on DVD.

I just download my movies from internet, sometimes they are availble for downloading while being still shown in the theatre. Not much of a legal problem here as long as you don’t make copies for profit or distribution. And the movie people are threatening to withhold showing premiers of their movies, because audiences are recording them and downloading in theri p.c. for file sharing..

we had a great time watching this movie with my daughter (6yo) and wife. after the movie, my daughter asked my wife if she cried, my wife said yes. my daughter responded, “i almost cried but i really tried hard to hold it in”. that actually confirms that my daughter already understands, feels and somehow emphatize on what is happening in the movie.

How does this version of the movie compare to the original classic version? My daughter watched the classic version and she liked it alot(meaning watched over and over). I will wait for it on DVD :).

Think I’ll check this movie out. I love Dakota Fanning!

Come to think of it – we haven’t gone out as family for many weekends now. Everyone is busy on their own. Time to take a break.

Buti ka pa, my 10-year old kid ka pa, meron pang nabi-beybi… hehe.

I don’t remember the last time I went to see a movie at the theater. Last summer, perhaps, with my daughters?

Will try to watch it. Thanks for the great review.

I loved this story as a child. I have not yet seen the movie. I will make time to see it sometime in the future. Thanks for the recommendation.

dakota fanning freaks me out. she’s like a very young old lady talking. it’s weird. i have read the book, and i might see the movie because of that and what you said in this entry.

Thanks for sharing that. I sounds like a great movie for the kids. I’m sure my son would love it.

We watched Night at the Museum last Friday and had a wonderful time. I will post about it soon.

The girls and I went to see its first screening today as they had no classes (school anniversary). We all loved the movie. Even Ms VGood, who often gets fiddly in the middle of a movie, was able to finish it. It was nice that there were very few of us in the cinema (about 5 that I saw!) so that I let the girls chuckle and laugh as much as they wanted! They enjoyed it!
