A Very Special Love (a movie review)

Chato: Two days before UPCAT. Relax, relax, relax! “Chato, ‘wag ka nang magaral. Relax ka lang” my older brother B.A. would always tell me. So I followed his advice. A while ago, I went to Trinoma with my mom and grandma to watch “A Very Special Love” starring John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo. It may sound jologs to other people but I don’t really mind. I’m such a fan of Filipino movies. The movie was actually good, it was beyond what I expected.

The storyline is not the typical Filipino love story where there’s a rich guy and a poor girl, or a person falling for his/her best friend, it does not even involve a complicated love triangle. It is simply about finding love when you least expect it. It may sound cliché, but it’s not, really. It is also about finding oneself and accepting one’ weaknesses. It’s about an ordinary girl with dreams like you and me, and a rich, handsome guy who seems to have everything in life, but not so.

me: I asked my daughter Chato to write a review of the movie, to veer her mind away from UPCAT. And that’s just about what she has accomplished, before her mind slipped back to UPCAT, and finally falling asleep.

Chato and I, my mother, too—3 generations, are suckers for anything John Lloyd. Call it jologs, but we do not mind at all. From start to finish, there was never a dragging moment, unlike the John Lloyd-Bea Alonzo tandem movies, which in most cases are heavy in drama. Sarah, in her role as Laida was hilarious, yes there were emo moments, lots of them. But what made Sarah a stand-out here was the comical and baduy side of the story. Most of the roles she played in the past were dramatic roles. For a change this time, John Lloyd’s role was not the usual ideal and lovable type of person, but one who was haughty, bossy and inconsiderate, full of hurt and hatred in his heart, making a monster out of him, not believing that he can be loved. He could not even love himself in the first place.

John Lloyd’s role as Miggy is a personification of someone number 2 who strives to be number 1, trying to prove himself in anything he does, something that he has grown up to, being a love child. Despite all these, Laida got to love Miggy, unconditionally. Admittedly, this unconditional love has to be given up when Laida finally gets tired of the seeming heart of stone that was in the person of Miggy.

Of course as in most Filipino films, the ending was predictable, guy asked for forgiveness, girl forgave, but the script writers and director made it in such a way that holds Miggy and Laida, dear to the viewers’ eyes, the viewers crying with them, laughing with them, and guessing what the next sentence is of the new quotable quotes (saved by Chato on her cellphone).

The movie leaves the question, “Pag ikaw ba nagmahal, dapat ka bang humingi ng kapalit na pagmamahal? Dapat mo bang antayin na mahalin ka pabalik?” Yes, the movie is full of quotes that one or the other from the audience can somehow relate to. Hear these out:

“Basta ang mahalaga di ka pa ubos. Andyan ka pa rin. Para pag dumating yung taong magmamahal sa yo, may maibabalik ka pa.”

“Because there’s so much pain in your heart, kaya hindi mo mararamdamang mahal kita.”

“Don’t make me feel I have to love you back.”

“Mapapagod ka lang umasa.Mapapagod ka lang maghintay Mapapagod ka lang umasang mamahalin ka.”

“Kahit minsan hindi ko naramdamang nakakapagod kang mahalin…Ngayon lang.”

A romantic comedy, megged by the 2007 Box Office Director Cathy Garcia-Molina, Star Cinema’s “A Very Special Love” is a must see for those in want of light diversion, a relaxed time, feel good, laughter, tears, and for some emo moments, Chato said this was so far the best John Lloyd movie she has seen, I give it a rating of 4 stars (out of 5).

I’m up for anything w/John Lloyd too especially when he teams up w/Bea Alonzo; I find both of them lovable! And I like Pinoy movies b/c of the drama induced moments also the senti and emo scenes! I cry alongside the casts – most of the time!

Anyway, this sounds like a good film pero they do not show Filipino films here. Seriously Tita. So usually I dig them via torrent sites b/c that’s the only way I can get ‘em movies. I’m still waiting for Batanes The Movie to be available for seeding though.

    Happy Weekend!

    :D

Perhaps, our writers and directors are now following the typical Taiwan/korean/japanese telenovela plots and storylines.

It all seems feather-light but has a most unusual depth to it. In all fairness, talagang may substance. And the lead actors were just incredibly amazing. John Lloyd Cruz is as usually great in anything he does but what I was most blown away was Sarah Geronimo’s performance! She indeed was such a revelation in this film like critics have been saying. I would have never thought she could pull off such a character as Laida Magtalas’ so wonderfully. Her acting was so natural and almost effortless. She was at her most charming self, her perfect comedic timing was undeniable and she was very bubbly and believable, so pure and sincere people kept on cheering for her character even when she’s at a most dramatic moment (“Para na kong baliw..”)Haha. You gotta see it to know what I mean.

This one’s just too hard to resist I couldn’t help clapping w/ the crowd in the jam-packed cinema when credits were finally rolled. The cineplex was so LOUD! Ibang level loudness. And the team-up? Hands-down! Kudos to VIVA-ABS partnership on this one, you struck a gold mine network bosses. Never in my life had I seen such a Pinoy film elicit so much shriek and guffaw from the audience from start to finish! I was most amazed. Everyone who left the cinema were either smiling, humming the film’s theme song or doing the now popular ‘sun dance’!:-) This film raises the bar for rom-coms of this generation. A definite must-see. Worth a repeat.

No wonder Grade A siya by the CEB. So, meaning it would receive 100% tax-exemption??? Most lucky and it seems to be breaking box office records as of date according to latest BO figures. An all-ages entertainment for the entire family, gang and those most jaded in love and life. I’m so definitely going to watch it again! Heartwarming!

To annamanila, let ur daughter go and see the film na:) But I suggest you come along:D I’m most sure you’ll never regret the experience w/ the most kwelang audience the film bring. Worth every penny ang movie at experience. Sulit talaga bayad. Ganda! Papanoorin ko ulit.

I so agree, Sam! The unanimous Grade A rating, highest by Cinema Evaluation Board standards, awarded to the film was most thoroughly deserved! Yay! I’m serious, you have got to be ‘bato’ pag di ka na-carried away sa sobrang kakiligan ng movie na’to! No wonder the cinema queues for this film are so long everytime I go to the mall! Sun dance

Best John Lloyd movie I’ve seen so far. He and Sarah really delivered well. Let’s continue supporting Filipino movies.

Tama ka diyan, pati sa interviews and promotions nila walang halong gimik o pagpapa-cute yung dala nilang kilig. Totoong-totoo yung pinapakita sa tao. Kaya i think pumatok yung tambalan dahil dun, kasi sila mismo ramdam na ramdam din yung kilig!

No. 1 sa akin ang A VERY SPECIAL LOVE! Sana lumabas na ang DVD!
