Poems of My Youth–Part 2

Life spent to the most holds promises for a brighter tomorrow. One must grow up in order to understand the intricacies of life and to face its ups and downs. Life is wonderful if only we see its real meaning and try to discover its hidden mystery. The following poems speak of realities, practicalities and questions, especially experienced by today’s youth—dedicated to my teenage sons and daughters, and to all of you, younger ones out there.
TIME
Yesterday…
is but a memory
of joy, fantasy
of sorrow and love
It’s gone.
Today…
is yesterday’s tomorrow
a new day of challenges
of failures and success.
Tomorrow…
is a dream, an image
of the next life.
Meet tomorrow with a smile on your face
For yesterday, today, and tomorrow
Are TIME—parts of life’s fulfillment.
UNTITLED
it’s deafening—the quiet stillness of the night
wondering why it is so
to shout out loud only to hear
the quiet mockery of my very call
brought by echoes from nowhere
just like the veiled sarcasm of bitter moments
when in a crowd but feeling alone
only to be lost in what i call my own
i have been through this many times
but i haven’t felt such pain, such bitterness
now i can tell one from the other
just like telling moments from memories
loneliness and aloneness are two different things.
MALAISE
lost in his own little world
not knowing how to face life
how to find its meaning and purpose
yet he keeps on seeking.
what does he really want?
i heard his unhappy questions
where have all the magic gone?
what happened with my joy in life?
how can i recapture the thrill of being alive?
television, theater, basketball
have suddenly become a bore
now he feels insecure, unhappy, discontented
all signs of youth’s malaise in a society
where its ever soulless materialism prevails.
I AM
i love to say, “i am”
over and over again
cause i love myself
don’t i?
i know only myself
what i am and can do
i know only mine
what i have and can use
i give myself what i like
and keep for myself
what i don’t
cause who knows
i might even use them someday
now i don’t feel good
why?
i don’t even have the nerve
to say “i am” once more
poor me
i have forgotten—you!

“I AM” is to me like a mother, sometimes forgetting herself, losing herself in the process of taking care of her children, of her husband, of her family. Am I speaking for others, or for myself? That I have to answer as I say “I am.”
