The past few years have seen us through crazy weather and climatic changes, not only here in the Philippines but in many parts of the world as well. Gone were the days when summer was in March-June, the rainy season was in July-August, and the other parts of the year were the cool days of September-February. At least within those months, the weather was somehow predictable.
Nowadays, the weather is as crazy as can be, becoming crazier and crazier by the day! We have the hottest days for a long time, interspersed with heavy rains, strong winds, flooding, an interplay of hot, warm, cool, humid, and what have you. It’s like traveling a few meters under the rain, and before you know it, you are entering dry land.
Get out of the house or office, leave the comforts of air-conditioning at noon—and you could almost not tolerate the heat. Walk down the main road, or maybe take a drive with windows wide open and you will feel the polluted air envelop your being. I still love walking in the rain (I have an aversion for umbrellas), feeling the wind blow by my face, but it seems not safe anymore because of its acid content.
This is may be the reason why my cough and colds have never truly left me. It’s like I had them forever, getting well one day, having bouts of cough the next, or just a runny nose for a few days, then shortness of breath because of a different kind of cough next. Sometimes I am afraid not to wake up anymore. I started having colds in May this year, when I tripped in our driveway, almost face flat on the floor one rainy day. How can one not get sick—I am sure many of you out there experience these bouts of coughs and sniffles, or at worse similar respiratory diseases. I must see a doctor, should not postpone any longer—and face whatever this is.
We are reaping what we sowed—this is the only thing I can say. Had we been more gentle with Mother Earth, we must not be experiencing this. Mother Earth must be furious. I am reminded of a poem I wrote last year, which I am sharing with those who have not seen it.
TRUMPET OF DOOM
Trumpet of doom
Don’t chase me now
With your reverberating tune
I run away
I can’t bear to listen
I can’t bear to look back
Not my fault, I tell you
There are billions of people
out there, collectively
ravaging forests
polluting rivers
dirtying the air
With no regard at all
For Mother Earth.
Trumpet of Doom
Don’t chase me now
With your reverberating tune
I tremble
I cower in fear
But on second thoughts
Rather than slowly suffering
Shuddering
Blood oozing from my eyes, ears, nose
At the point of no return
When Mother Earth decides to avenge its wrath
When it is time
I will beg you
Trumpet of Doom
Chase me with your reverberating tune
And eat me alive, fast!

oo nga, the weather is so unpredictable in the philippines. makes sure to have your cough checked. i do get it too around spring time from allegies and the only way i can deal with it is by taking canalog shot otherwise, i suffer terribly for a great length of time.

tuwing may taong (including me) na nagkakalat sa kalsada or bsta doing anything antagonistic to the environment, cnsb ko “ikaw may kasalanan kaya ang init eh!” or “ikaw may kasalanan kaya ang lakas ng ulan” it’s sort of a joke but it’s true. lahat tayo may kasalanan.

You slipped last May? How cums I didn’t know. But did I tell you I did too .. last July when I was in a mall in Bangkok. I think it was the eyeglasses I was wearing (I am not used to wearing one you know but decided to for that trip) that made me miss wo steps of a stairway.
But I agree this weather is so weird.
Hope you’re feeling better now, Dine.
