Friday the 13th Struck Again

March 15th, 2009 by Sexy Mom · Viewed 1239 times · 14 Comments

I have always been averse to Friday the 13ths, because there have been a number of events in my life associated with the number 13 and yes, with Friday the 13th. Some are too private to share, while some are too painful to remember.

Anyway, last Friday started off not too well end ended up pretty bad. Well, it was not really Friday–it was late Thursday evening, I took a nap at 10 pm expecting to be ready for an 11 pm meeting with a client in New York. Ughhh, I woke up at 12:30 am, too late for the meeting–what face to show my client of 1 week. Friday the 13th started with an email, saying “I am very sorry…”

Had to go to a bank in Katipunan at 10 am, glad that Angelo was able to drive me there, then spent a few minutes in Rustan’s so as not to be too early for a lunch date with my friends in a Thai restaurant in Robinson’s Galleria. Opened Sexy Mac, glad WiFi was working, then suddenly the screen froze. I tried to shut down Mac, but was too impatient, I took out the battery. When I restarted it, all that happened was the usual Mac opening sound (music to my ears all the time I hear it), then a blank screen. Nada–only a blank screen. I thought it was just one of those days when Sexy Mac was acting up. Just a caress or a whisper would bring it back to life.

Kept Sexy Mac in its sleeve and in my bag, then proceeded to Robinson’s to have lunch with my friends. Traffic was so bad, what used to take me 30 minutes from Katipunan to Ortigas took almost 2 hours. Unlucky me I told myself, so much for Friday the 13ths. I almost missed my friend from Canada and my other friends, they were halfway through lunch when I arrived.

Decided to bring Sexy Mac to Power Mac Center in Mega Mall’s Cyberzone. She must be sick, I told myself, and needed a check up, and maybe, some TLC. Findings? Hard drive has given up on me–it has crashed. The Mac specialist could not recover any files after 2 hours of tinkering here and there, using different applications and software. First time in my life I felt so stressed out, called up Angelo, no answer, called up a friend, no answer. I wanted to talk to someone–anyone who could assure me that it would be all right. It seemed like the universe had been conspiring against me at that time.

Breathe in…breathe out…breathe in…breathe out…That was all I could do until Angelo’s call came through. He advised me to buy a hard disk, and we would try other places to have my files recovered–my working files, my templates, my personal files, my pictures, including family pictures and digitalized pictures of travels for the past 15 years!

Options? Reformat. Or buy a hard disk and try to have the files recovered.

I had to cancel an 8pm presentation in a call center, as my presentation had not been kept in a memory stick. That evening, I flitted from one computer to another (from BA’s Mac to Alan Jr’s Mac Mini to Vince’s Mini Note and the girls’ desk top computers), but I was not comfortable working with them.

And it dawned on me that yes, Friday the 13th has struck again! And last night, I cried while speaking with Angelo on phone, I was very miserable–I missed Sexy Mac, and I felt the kids were not cooperating enough, even though all of them have offered me the use of their own computers.

Now, I only have to accept it, take the bitter pill that it was all my own fault–I should have taken care of Sexy Mac properly. The moment I heard that queer whirring sound more than a week ago, I should have gone immediately for Mac care. Other possible causes I learned from the Mac specialist are: improper shutdown (guitly, sometimes I just turn the power button off) though most of the time Sexy Mac is in sleep mode, using Mac while vehicle is moving (guilty, too), shock (guilty, one time when I got off the car, Sexy Mac fell), age (it’s almost 2 years old), or liquid damage (my lips are sealed), etc.

I have to stop sulking now…life has to go on…tomorrow, I will bring Sexy Mac for another round of tests and care. Sexy Mac has to start living again…otherwise, I will be eyeing for the Chrome!

I’m sorry to hear about what happened to Sexy Mac. It’s a painful lesson to learn about our gadgets. I just had an unplanned purchase for a new motherboard and video card for my computer today so I know how you feel. I slept last night in panic mode and woke up so agitated about the fact that I am working on a project and there my computer conked out on me.

I hope Sexy Mac will be revived. Let’s keep our hopes high on that.

Bad luck! I hope that Sexy Mac gets well soon because I can’t imagine anyone working on a computer they’re not comfortable with.

Being a laptop user myself, I had the chills while reading this one.

But there’s always the bright sun after the gloom and doom. Soon enough, your SexyMac would be back and sexier than ever!

Sorry to hear about that ate Dine! That really sucks!

I think getting a new hard drive and using a data recovery software might be able to recover your files or salvage some of it.
