Q2-ADMU-36/DLSU-28
Q3-ADMU-54/DLSU-31
Q4-ADMU-65-DLSU-57
The DLSU Archers and the FEU Tamaraws will meet on Thursday, 11 September 2008, for the best of three series which will determine who will be the #3 post. ADMU Blue Eagles needs only 1 win against the UE Warriors for the #1 post.
31 August 2008 (UST vs UE)
UST is now out of the magic 4—they were short of 2 points for a tie. At the start of the last quarter UE had a very wide lead, which UST was able to bring down to only 2. UE now takes the fourth place.
30 August 2008 (ADMU vs NU)
It’s official, with ADMU’s win against NU (83/58), ADMU gets the twice to beat advantage. Watch out for the final stretch of the elimination round. The last game will be on 6 September, ADMU-DLSU.
(UP vs FEU—a very close fight)
From the start to the very end, it was a close fight. It was a tie between FEU and UP, and with 1.4 minutes remaining, FEU scored 4 points, then a 3-point shot by UP. There was no more shot after that, the ball with FEU in possession during the remaining last few seconds. Had UP won this game, it would have been their priced win this season.
21 August 2008 (ADMU vs UE)
By the third quarter up to the last 3 minutes of the fourth, UE was leading by up to 8 points. Two 3-pointers from ADMU’s Chris Tiu and a 2-point shot from Ryan Buenafe as against UE’s Thiele’s 2 points slimmed down UE’s lead by only a 1 point.
Another 2-point shot from UE gave UE a 3-point lead, with a little more than 30 seconds remaining. Chris Tiu’s 3-point shot tied the game at 50 points each, with 12 seconds remaining. UE was in possession, but at 1.5 seconds remaining, UE committed a back court violation. The ball was turned over to ADMU.
During the 5-minute extension ADMU and UE were each shooting points, and it was still nobody’s game. Chris Tiu did not play for half of the extension because of cramps. Ateneo won by 4 points, at 61 ADMU and 57 UE.
Earlier, during the first game, UP beat ADU by 31 points. UP scored 73 while ADU scored 42.
9 August 2008. It was payback time for the Ateneo Blue Eagles who lost to the FEU Tamaraws in the first round. It is their only loss so far. The Tamaraws controlled most of the first half with 5 triples, but could not sustain their lead after that. FEU might not have star player Baracael the remaining of the season, as he recuperatesfrom a gunshot wound. Robert Kave has returned to Papua New Guinea after the shooting incident. Ateneo scored 78 points, while FEU scored 74.
Earlier, the UST Growling Tigers won 97-83 against the Adamson Falcons, with Jervy Cruz’s 29 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. This is Cruz’s last season in the UAAP. UST also saw the return of starting guard Japs Cuan who has not played in the last 4 games because of a torn meniscus.
3 August 2008. After the first round, Ateneo takes solo position to the lead, with only 1 losing game. FEU and DLSU ties with 5 wins and 2 loses, while UE comes fourth with 4 wins and 3 loses.
The past five games were interesting, with ADMU losing to FEU last Thursday, UP beating ADU and UE beating DLSU yesterday, and NU beating FEU in today’s first game. It was NU’s first win so far.
ADMU beat UST in today’s final game of the first round, by 7 points. Khasim Mirza broke ADMU’s lead at the 5:38 mark giving UST a 3-point lead in the 4th quarter (54-51). After that, UST remained scoreless while ADMU made 10 straight points in 5 minutes. ADMU and UST scored 3 more each afterwards, with a final score of 64-ADMU and 57-UST.
In this game, Chris Tiu scored 14, Rabeh 17, Jhai Reyes 10, while rookie Buenafe made 12. UST’s Dylan Ababou scored 15 points.

13 July 2008: Ateneo Beats UE, 64-58 Three hours before the Ateneo-UE games at the Philsports Arena, I had a photo shot with who would turn out to be today’s Best Player of the Game—Rabah al-Hussaini. Today he scored 18 points, and grabbed 17 rebounds. It was one of the best games for far this season. On half time, UE grabbed the lead from the Ateneo, leading by 2 points. At the end of the third quarter, it was a tie, and up to the early part of the fourth quarter, it was still no one’s game, with UE tying scores with Ateneo and at some point in time leading by a few points. Al-Hussaini was clearly Ateneo’s star player shooting straight 8 points at one time. Rookie Ryan Buenafe also did a surprise by scoring 4 points with al-Hussaini’s 4 points during the critical moments when Ateneo and UE were tied at 51 points, building a 9 point cushion, at 63-52 less than 3 minutes from the end of the game. Again, there was no question about Chris Tiu’s performance, with 11 points.
UE’s Elmer Espiritu had 11 points and 9 rebounds. It’s UE’s first loss in the eliminations. Congratulations, Ateneo!
10 July 2008: A Battle for the Skies/Ateneo Beats Adamson It was a battle for the skies as the Adamson Soaring Falcons faced the Ateneo Blue Eagles on the court at 4pm this afternoon. The Blue Eagles have been dominating the skies since 1997, leaving no space for the other blue bird. Year 1997 was the last time the Soaring Falcons beat the Ateneo Blue Eagles, when the price of gasoline was only P12/liter.
Both teams did not score much field goals during the first two quarters of the game. Shooting has been very sour for both sides, even for the AdMU-DLSU hero Chris Tiu, missing his field goals and even his free throws. On the other side, Yambot and Gonzalgo shot very well from beyond the arc. Points for the Blue Eagles were taken care of by guard Eric Salamat who later grimaced in pain as he felt muscle cramps on his right leg. After the second half cheering exhibition, the Blue Eagles switched from man-to-man to zone defense shutting down the Falcons’ inside scoring and forcing them to shoot perimeters. Thanks to big men Al-Hussaini, Baclao and Nkemakolam, the Falcons’ did not dare go inside the paint. Switching to this type of strategy gave the Eagles a big advantage, letting even their rookies (Chua, Buenafe, and Salva) step-up and play their game. Completely shutting down the Falcons’ game, Chris Tiu finally got in his zone scoring more points for the Eagles. Time was running out and the Falcons still weren’t able to answer both the Eagles’ offense and defense, leading to their eventual loss. Rookies went in the court as the lead was extended and the clock ticked down. The blue birds ended their battle with a score of 72-45 in favor of the Blue Eagles, clinching their second win in the season.
5 July 2008: IT WAS A DAY OF SURPRISES!
A Special Guest Immediately after Game 1 (UP vs NU), guess who came to grace the occasion? None other than MANNY PACQUIAO . He came to accept UAAP’s Award for Sports Excellence, and was cheered by the crowd to no end. He was cited as a shining inspiration for today’s youth. He also gamely accepted host UP’s jersey and cap, wore them, and gave his usual warm thank you, and faced the greens and the blues to say, “Good luck sa inyo at sa inyo.”
On the UP/NU game,
(1) UP won against NU by 14 points, athough in Q1, NU was leading by 11 points.
(2) It was obvious on both ADMU and DLSU sides who have filled most of the seats by the game’s Q3 that the blues and the greens were routing for the last season’s underdogs who didn’t win any of the 14 rounds in the prelims.
Memory Lane:
Was it not NU’s win against ADMU last season which caused a best of 4 play off, instead of ADMU immediately being the team to beat, with a play off for the best of 3?
On the ADMU/DLSU game,
(1) Right at the very start of the game, the crowd was surprised to find ADMU given 2 free shots—a technical to DLSU players who, for the seeming delay to start the games. were coaxing the officials to start the game ASAP.
(2) ADMU’s first 2 points were Tiu’s free throws, while DLSU’s first shot was a 3-pointer.
(3) ADMU was given a warning in Q2 for excessive complaining.
(4) ADMU Coach Norman Black was given a technical in Q4 for heated verbal exchange with somebody in the crowd.
(5) Up until 3 mins and 17 seconds to go in Q4, ADMU and DLSU were still tied. Before that DLSU was leading by 4 points. Really, it was anybody’s ballgame.
On the Cheerleaders
(1) The male cheerleaders of DLSU formed an arrow attacking the letter A formation of the girls. No AL SALLE this time.
(2) The cheerleaders of ADMU showed a remarkable change in their choreography and stunts, high energy and more difficult this time and what looked like easy 3-tiered climbs, which made previous years’ choreography and stunts pale in comparison.
Individual Scores
ATENEO 79—Tiu 26, Salamat 10, Al-Hussaini 10, Buenafe 8, Nkemakolam 7, Baclao 7, Burke 4, Austria 3, Long 2, Salva 1, Escueta 1, Baldos 0, Reyes 0. LA SALLE 73-Casio 19, Maierhofer 16, Mangahas 13, Webb 7, Villanueva 4, Bagatsing 4, Revilla 3, Walsham 2, Atkins 2, Barua 2, Ferdinand 1, Malabes 0.
Quarters ADMU-DLSU: 17-16, 35-40, 56-54, 79-73
30 June 2008
UAAP Season 71 opens on Saturday, 5 July 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum, with the University of the Philippines as host. The theme of this season is Leadership through Sports
We’ve got tickets to the opening ceremonies on Saturday 5 July, which will immediately be followed by the FEU vs AdU and UE vs UST games. We also have tickets for the ADMU vs DLSU, rather, UP vs NU games on Sunday, 6 July. I intentionally said “rather” because this time, I’ve got 2 kids, BA and Vince in UP—yes, we will cheer for the UP Fighting Maroons on Sunday when they play against NU. Though after the UP vs NU game, we will be shifting to the ADMU side of the fence, even perhaps changing colors from maroon to blue, as we in the family are still Ateneans at heart.
General admission tickets used to cost only P25, they now sell for P50 each. Upper A and B tickets still cost the same at P75. Hard to get them, Vince had to line up in UP for almost 2 hours just to get the tickets. The second time he came to buy tickets, he was able to get Upper B tickets. A tip for ADMU-DLSU fans, as of this afternoon there were still lots of tickets in UP for Sunday’s games. When BA and Vince were at the ADMU, it was always difficult for them to get tickets, even for general admission.

Wohoo! UAAP action all over again.
Animo La Salle!
Are the tickets in UP exclusive to UP students only?
Sexy Mom: Am not sure, but you can perhaps ask UP friends to buy for you.
May tickets din ako. Baka magkatagpo tayo doon.
Hi Dine, I look at your post and I think it has to do with basketball. I just don’t know why I didn’t sit down and make sense of basketball at all. I mean, I can do some complicated biochemistry stuff, and then basketball makes no sense to me. It always looks exciting though.
I think basketball is better than baseball where players stand around twidling their thumbs while people with bats decided whether to hit the ball or not.
