I have been to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) several times for the last 5 years, visiting schools in different districts. Sri Lanka is in South Asia, near India, and an hour away from the Maldives by plane.
Here’s sharing with you some pictures of the breath taking country, known for its ecotourism and biodiversity. Sri Lankans take their environment very seriously, such that it is integrated in their school curriculum.

Setting of the movie, The Bridge On the River Kwai

Some of the shots in movie (won 7 Oscars)

The Famous St Claire’s Tea House (where I sipped my first cup of tea)

Overlooking the Waterfalls and Tea Plantation

Flowers in Summer

A Garden in Summer

A Doggie and a Monkey

Here I Found Peace

ahh parang ang sarap maligo sa batis na yun. pangarap kong magpatayo ng bahay sa mga ganyang lugar.. tahimik, maaliwalas at malapit sa kalikasan
SexyMom: totoo yan, ang sarap siguro ng buhay.

wow they integrate the environment into the school curriculum? that’s amazing. sana tayo rin. your pictures especially the last one reminds me of my tito’s place in florida, there were a lot of trees. hayyyy.
=)

Those are very nice photos. Reminds me of the route to Laguna via Antipolo. Galing naman ng school system nila. That way they practically pave the way for the preservance of their eco-system. Galing. Wish I could go there one of these days. My lola went years ago and brought home a “supot” of semi-precious stones. Cheap daw dyan ang ganun. I remember telling her that I’d use them for jackstones tutal mura lang
SexyMom: yes, precious stones abound there, that is, if you know where to find them.

gosh! I’ve seen The Bridge on the River Kwai many times already (blame my father!) but I didn’t know that it was shot in Sri Lanka hehe
now I know!
SexyMom: i also learned it only from them.

Nice shots, sexymom. I like the first and last photos the best. And I like the way you posed by the waterfalls.
SexyMom: oh, the pose by the waterfall—i thought i would fall, fall, fall…but it was really amazing and breathtaking!

Wow! Nice place.
How come OUR environment is not integrated in our school curriculum? Oo nga pala. We don’t even have enough schools to be integrated. heh I’m being sarcastic.o/ Just thinking out loud.
SexyMom: oh well, i guess it is political will!
Jamaipanese // Jun 15, 2007 at 1:19 pm
really nice pictures especially of the monkey and dog facing off _
SexyMom: i, too, enjoyed that—they were just looking at each other, seemed like waiting for the next move.

hello ma’am,
when i received two emails from my blog’s host, i.ph, notifying me of two new comments at my blog, i couldn’t believe that one of the bloggers i respect had actually visited my humble blog and left comments. i’m a lurker here, you can probably see my IP address from time to time, mahiyain lang po ako mag-comment :D. kaya po sobrang natuwa ako sa pagdalaw ninyo. maraming salamat po.
thank you for taking us to sri lanka. para pong nakapunta na rin doon ang mga readers mo through the pictures. my favorites are picture 4 (parang painting siya but the waterfalls is real!) and picture 8 (because i love trees).
environmental awareness is also integrated in the minimum learning competencies used in the philippines, in both elementary and high school levels.
SexyMom: nice to hear from you, bea. you know, i enjoy interacting with young readers like you. as to sri lanka photos (i also had a post about bhutan earlier), i plan to be posting more on other places, like pakistan, india, bangladesh, etc.
thanks for info about environmental awareness being integrated in the phil curriculum. in sri lanka, it is more than awareness. they have environmental worklabs, interactive materials, and many others. it is a big deal for them, and the government is really serious about it.

Sri Lanka is one of the countries I would really like to visit. The photos that you have posted really made me want to visit the country even more.
PS. Your post on Independence day was really really good.
SexyMom: thanks, AL, i am glad to hear from you—from Norway. please visit again.

Kelan mo ko dadalin diyan? Hahahaha.
Sa UP immersed na immersed kami sa nature. We have to pass through a talahiban just to get to our class. HAHAHAHAHA
SexyMom: yes, BA, i guess UP is one of the places very similar in most of Sri Lanka, the trees, the talahiban, etc. but UP only has sunflowers in summer. and they have monkeys and bats and butterflies, etc.

Nice shots Tita!
[:
Yep, I am planning to visit Sri Lanka one day too. It seems like a nice and beautiful country to me.
SexyMom: Sri Lanka is indeed a beautiful country, unexplored, though of course there is the security problem to reckon with, every now and then.

ang ganda naman nang pics, very relaxing at buhay na buhay ang mga colors. I love the “Overlooking the Waterfalls and Tea Plantation” shot para pong pang MTV at post-card
Mommy Dine, you are really a well-travelled person. How I wish ako din. Nevertheless, thanks for sharing your travels para mo na rin kaming sinama
SexyMom: am afraid that my travel is very limited to asia—though most of the places i went to the past 10 years are places which are no really in a tourist’s list, say the subcontinent, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, or India, etc. But i will be sharing pictures.
pining // Jun 15, 2007 at 10:51 pm
Silly me, I thought River Kwai is in Thailand /Burma, I never thought for a moment it’s in Sri Lanka – haven’t seen the film either coz I’m no fan of war films…
Spectacular views, SexyMom
did you like Sri Lankan food? Curries?
SexyMom: i have always liked their food in the sub-continent and neighboring, curries and all, but there is something distinct with Sri Lankan food—they have lots of vegetables, dried fish, vegetables, curries, coconut milk, etc. I learned to eat vegetables from my travels in these places. Let me look for the photos.

Dine, lovely pics! smart of them to integrate environment with their school curriculum. we have to implement this same concept in our country.
I noticed you were wearing a jacket, what was the temperature like there?
SexyMom: Belle, temperature is almost the same as in the Philippines, but when you go further up, it is cool, esp in tea plantations.

naku nagreminisce ako agad sa mga pictures na nakita. Bigla ko tuloy na miss yung farm ng lola ko sa Mindanao, sa Upi, Maguindanao in particular. I used to spend my summer vacation there until we moved to Manila in 1980. Sad to say di nako nakabalik dun =(
SexyMom: yes, Girlie, i guess we still have lots of greeneries in the countryside.

What beautiful scenic pictures!
SexyMom: yes, there are plenty of beautiful places there. Many europeans stay there for months, and move to different places during winter.

Hi! These are really nice pictures. I never thought that nature could still be as abundant and blooming like that…
annamanila // Jun 16, 2007 at 5:29 pm
I read the book and vaguely remember the movie (with William Holden?). The setting (attention Pining!)—the river Kwai is really Thailand but perhaps the movie makers found Sri Lanka a more cooperative place to shoot with similar sceneries siguro. At least thats what I remember, right Dine?
It was a good and poignant war story which can stand rereading.
Beautiful photos, Dine. I am sure you bought a lot of gems there. Its famous for tea too.
See ya in a few hours.
kathy // Jun 16, 2007 at 8:02 pm

Wow ang ganda ng views, sexy mom….
The tea house, really very nice…..
The tree, that’s a wonderful tree….it shows really his beauty, by lending there, feel so ease and relaxing….
The garden, the flowers…....
ja, I remember, near to us there is a Park, Luisan ParK, they have a very nice tea house-restaurant, where you can sip diff, kinds of teas from all over the world….
Even though you will not sip their tea, just sit beside the garden near to the house, you can smell the fragrances of their teas…..
Thanks for sharing…........I remember now, where to visit a park….the tea house at Luisan park, lol…

The “river” looked something out of a postcard… you captured it perfectly.

I saw the movie The Bridge On the River Kwai in black and white, it’s great to see the setting in color.
I imagined Sri Lanka to be dry, never imagined it to be so green and beautiful. Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos of your trip Sexymom.
