UPDATE 21 September 2008
Ateneo beat La Salle 69-61 in Game 1 of the Championship’s best of three series in a jam-packed Araneta Coliseum. This broke the UAAP history in which Ateneo never won 3 straight games over La Salle. Another Ateneo win, on Thursday 25 September, will seal Ateneo’s status as UAAP Season 71 Champion.
GO ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT!

One day to go and it will be an ALL OUT WAR—Ateneo vs La Salle at UAAP
ANNOUNCEMENT: TicketNet will open at 12:30 pm tomorrow Sunday for General Admission Tickets.

One day to go, and it will be an ALL OUT WAR! 4 pm at the Araneta between ATENEO and LA SALLE. But as early as after lunch, the area surrounding the Araneta, Gateway, the MRT, LRT and all roads leading to the Araneta will be splotches of greens and blues, and during the games—a sea of blue on one side and green on the other. That’s the spirit that has shrouded the UAAP games for Ateneo and La Salle, be they championships or just the elimination rounds. Other schools would not have the same. With Ateneo and La Salle, the school spirit prevails—students, alumni and fans come in droves, filling each space, bursting to seams, cheering staunchly. One does not leave the coliseum until the games are finished, until the alma mater songs are sung—win or lose.
Last Sunday, I was at the Araneta watching with my kids DLSU vs FEU and ADMU vs UE, each for their twice to beat advantage. I was openly and fiercely cheering for FEU, hoping that DLSU would lose the game. I thought it would be better to kill La Salle’s chance for another championship at the onset. But secretly, deep within me, I had the yearning that DLSU would win so that the championships would be between Ateneo and La Salle. Who would not want another Ateneo vs La Salle game?
When it was obvious who would win, I was shouting with the crowd, OMG! OMG! this is it! this is it! it will be Ateneo vs La Salle in the championships. Even days after the obvious truth that both schools would be facing each other again, at least in 2 games (for the best of 3 series), talks continued. The media—newspapers, TV, radio and blogs have over-hyped the upcoming games, bringing up any item of conversation and contention. And oh—how people, blues, greens, and those who are not, talk about it.
And the biggest question is—where are the tickets? People want to get tickets at any cost! No matter how much! Nothing beats being at the Araneta—watching the games live, cheering, leaping, hands in the air, heads high! Exchanging cheers with the greens. A few years back, my mom, wanting my sons to be able to watch live, volunteered to line up at the Araneta for tickets as early as 6 am. She had no cellphone then, she was still missing at 2 pm, and we all panicked—called every police station, hospital and clinic, in case something went wrong. I sent my brothers searching for her, but could not be found. The police said we could only declare her as a missing person only after 24 hours. She appeared in the doorway at 3:30 pm, triumphantly showing the tickets. What a relief, she did all she could to get those tickets.
Now, the newspapers report that a Patron ticket is up for bid for P25,000! Upper box A tickets selling for P90 are up at e-bay for P6,000/pc or P10,000/pr. General admission tickets will be openly sold by scalpers tomorrow for up to P500 each to buyers who are very willing to pay. During the last Ateneo vs La Salle games—someone offered to buy our 6 general admission tickets for P600 each. My kids said, no way!
I still believe that this is ATENEO’s YEAR AT UAAP. The elimination rounds and the final rounds proved it—any which way, Ateneo is ready. I am so proud to be an Atenean mom, so proud to be an Atenean myself (sorry, dear Readers, let me have my bragging rights just this time, at least during the Championships). And WIN or LOSE, it’s the school we choose.
C’mon now, ONE BIG FIGHT
