We got news that Fr. Fermin (fondly called Fr. Joey) has just passed away from a lingering illness–he had a severe liver problem. His remains will be brought to the AGS Chapel at 6:30 in the morning tomorrow.

When Ateneo President Bienvenido F. Nebres announced his replacement in March 2008, he thanked Fr. Fermin “for seven years of excellent and very dedicated service as Headmaster of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School.”

The achievements of Fr. Fermin’s leadership include: raising the bar in academics, exposing the Grade School to innovations, bringing the community together in collaboration for reforms, advocating simplicity.

Last SY 2004/05, on the occasion of the AGS’s “Limang Dekada sa Loyola,” Fermin Hall (Fr. Jose Moises T. Fermin, SJ Hall) was erected. it stands as a fitting AGS 50th anniversary memento. It was named after Fr. Fermin, then the headmaster. His dream of a building that would be home to the Grades 4 and 5 faculty and studentry became a reality.

Known for his good rapport with and accessibility to the students and his sense of simplicity, Fr. Fermin exposed the school to innovation and global competitiveness and brought the community to work together for the essential curricular changes to raise the standards in academics.

Let us pray for the eternal repose of Fr. Fermin.
