An Interesting Find: JEEPNEY MAGAZINE

I have been seeing this glossy magazine for a few days now in the house, and my curiosity got into me when I heard Vince and BA discussing about minimum wage, the plight of jeepney drivers, the street vendors, and the plight of the poor. They were discussing the articles that they read in a magazine called JEEPNEY Magazine.

Vince bought the magazine from a street vendor (along the overpass in Katipunan Ave) selling this glossy magazine at P100. Little did he know that in paying P100, he has already helped the street vendor. The vendor receives P50, P25 goes toward printing and P25 is used for production costs, vendor training and vendor oversight. The goal of the publishers is for each of their vendors to sell a minimum of 10 magazines a day, giving them an income exceeding, by 40%, the Philippine minimum wage. Proceeds from the initial sale can be their capital to buy their next allocation of 10 magazines.

The JEEPNEY Magazine is actually a new project—the issue we have is Volume 1, Issue 2, meaning that it has been launched only a month or two ago. The 2nd issue has an exclusive interview of Tony Meloto, and features, like Treasures in Tanza, A Barker’s Life, The Rich of the “Bangketa”, Meet Our Vendors, and many other stories. A pdf copy of Issue 1 is available here.

What is important also is that the JEEPNEY MAGAZINE is an eye-opener, showcasing the lives of our brothers and sisters who have less in life. It creates an awareness—poverty to its core, the social issues the struggles of the poor people around us, the people we see everyday in the streets, under the bridges, the jeepney drivers, the lowly employee, their fears, how they cope, how they toil, and yes, their dreams and their hopes.

The JEEPNEY Magazine is patterned after the 200 plus street magazines in the world dealing with important social issues affecting the country. More importantly, they are distributed by street people—homeless, unemployed, or marginalized. In a way, they are given hope and the opportunities to better themselves.

How can you help? You can write, you can promote, you can help train and minister to the vendors, you can work with the social workers in developing a ministry effective to the vendors with our unique culture, you can help position the vendors in a place where people can afford to pay P100 for a magazine (about the equivalent of a cup of Starbucks coffee, or a McDo quarter pounder sandwich, or a KFC chicken meal, etc.).

Learn more about the objectives and vision of the organization, The Urban Opportunities for Change Foundation, Inc here, how the project works here, and how to contribute here.

I believe in the project’s cause, that is why in my small way, I am promoting the JEEPNEY MAGAZINE.

Kudos to the one who initiated such publication. It is a very philanthropic endeavor. Not only is the mag going to help financially, but showcasing those who earn less and have less in the magazine is a morale booster at its best. I will surely encourage my relatives to patronize the mag.
    And, thanks for the links.
