DO IT YOURSELF.
It’s like a four-letter word, only it has twelve. Think about this:
- when you tickle yourself, do you laugh?
- when you give yourself a massage, do you feel more relaxed?
- when you give yourself a pedicure, can you get that nasty ingrown out?
- when you try those hot-oil kits, does your hair become truly shiny?
- when you dye you hair in your own bathroom, does it turn out just like the picture on the box?
I’ve read magazines that promote and hail these D.I.Y. activities to save time and money. Most moms are too busy at home looking after the kids, or working, to look after themselves and get a great salon hairdo, leg waxing or a rejuvenating massage. In trying to do these things by one’s self, most women end up getting uneven orange colored hair (it really happens!), crooked toenails and overplucked eyebrows. In the end, she might end up in a worse state than before.
D.I.Y. pampering, i guess is not pampering at all. It’s an oxymoron, because for me, pampering is about other people doing all the work for you! Because moms are always giving and putting other people’s interests before theirs, and for a change it is nice to be on the receiving end every once in a while.
Yes, it costs money, but while money can’t buy everything, it can buy you a few hours of pleasure and bliss (without being R-rated), and comments on how great your hair looks, and questions on how you got that “glow”. Also, a happy and relaxed mom, is a nicer mom. Your kids will thank you for it!
So ladies, take time to stop and smell the flowers and the peppermint-scented air. Don’t feel guilty… we do everything else anyway! We deserve it. We are worth more than “Do it yourself”.

I do DIY here because I have no choice, it really costs too much and it’s not practical to go to salon. But when I am in the philippines bumabawi talaga ako…hahaha!
sexy mom: that’s one of the luxuries we have here in the Phils. compared to other places, spa, hair treats, nail treats, etc., are the cheapest!

amen! i once tried dyeing my hair, (had no time to go to the salon) and i ended up getting dye on my ears. e ang hirap pala tanggalin. eventually, i did get the stains off, but my skin was raw from scrubbing with joy dishwashing liquid
hay, stressful!
sexy mom: you made my eldest daughter laugh, lady cess!

Maybe you have some salon contacts as part of their marketing strategy!! No sexy mom, joke lang….
Why waste your time doing it when you are not satisfied of the outcome anyway!!! give the job to the experts…..
sexy mom: oh, dear, they would not even offer me discounts, even if we come in droves (me and my brood). Wish ko lang
feng // Apr 25, 2007 at 4:06 pm
i agree. how can it be called pampering if you can predict what to feel?
sex mom: true!
sasha // Apr 25, 2007 at 4:22 pm
True, tita. You moms deserve a day of relaxation and pampering. Wag na ngang DIY because mapapagod ka rin in the end hehe…
I saw a mom with violet hair. Kulang naman yata yun sa dye.
Happy Wednesday, tita sexy!
sexy mom: thanks Sasha. hmmm, violet hair, kakaiba!

What is the DIY for men?
sexy mom: oh men, they’re from mars, we women are from venus (do i make sense?). they have lots and lots of DIY gadgets, though i understand they want pampering, too. i am amazed to see them in spas, parlors, etc.
soloops // Apr 25, 2007 at 4:34 pm
How true, sexymom, how true! You know us women so well, haha!
Because I rarely have the time to go to salons, I tried DIY pampering too.So far, all my attempts to do my own pedicure ended up with me limping for days. It seems I really have to make time for that and other treatments, or else the hubby’s eyes might stray somewhere else.
sexy mom: or hubby could give you a treat!
Mari // Apr 25, 2007 at 4:46 pm
I have to do it myself. To go to a spa would cost me an arm and a leg, and I can’t afford to lose those two. When I go back home to the Phil. I will spoil myself.
sexy mom: of course, of course, arm and leg first before the pampering, and at least you always have something to look forward to–coming home!
tutubi // Apr 25, 2007 at 4:59 pm
i love DIY stuff but mostly techie stuffs and tours
sometimes, I massage my back against a wall, is that DIY massage?
sexy mom: now, now, that massage is an innovative DIY massage!
tofubaby // Apr 25, 2007 at 5:31 pm
I agree that to pamper yourself, its better to have it done by somebody else if its something that really requires skill. But you can still pamper yourself by simple things like a luxurious bath on a tub (if you have one) or on a “batya”.
sexy mom: for a summer this HOT, luxurious bath on a “batya” would do!”
Kyels // Apr 25, 2007 at 8:42 pm
I’d rather ask some professional to do it rather than doing it myself — fearing that I might make mistakes along the process! Heehee!
sexy mom: that’s what i am afraid, too–mistakes, what if i lose my hair!
Gina // Apr 25, 2007 at 9:35 pm
First of all– I Like the New streamlined look of your blog! Wow,wow,at wow pa!
I agree, DIY pampering isn’t pampering at all, it’s just taking care of yourself. =P
But going to spas and salons could be quite costly and maybe not practical for some. Pero kung kaya, why not di ba?
Happy Mothers’ Day Dine! I bet this sexy mom will get a lot of pampering come Mothers’ Day
sexy mom: oh, yes! advanced happy mother’s day to you, and to all!
analyse // Apr 25, 2007 at 9:55 pm
I agree with mommy Ann, it’s just too expensive here, so I wait for my philippine stopover and do the pampering there.
nakakatawa nga because it was even noticed the last time i was in pinas for work. you know, in the office, i’m the ‘expat na mukhang pinay’ and it seemed that other girls were murmuring na mahal daw siguro sa france hehe..
sexy mom: parang scenario sa isang commercial!

Oh my! Is that new header from where I think it comes from? Ang galing — bagay na bagay sa feminine and dainty and sexy Dine. I love it. Congrats to D and D! haha
Hey, I like DIY only because I don’t like going to beauty parlors. I am weird that way. I don’t like it when the attendants call me ‘mother,’ when they ask who last did my hair as though the one who did do not deserve to live, when they make gossip over my head. ay sorry … maybe its different now .. ang tagal ko nang di nakapagparlor eh. I prefer home or office service.
Talking about weird .. do you know i tried to give myself a perm? hehe
But you are right .. its nice to be pampered .. gusto ko din sa spa, pero twice or thrice lang ako nakapunta. halos makatulog ako duon.
sexy mom: you got me and daughter Monica entertained with your comment. i would have loved to give some training “DOs and DON’Ts” for salon staff. “mother” may be acceptable, but i once overheard a staff comment to the client about how many months pregnant she was, when in fact, the lady must have that “always pregnant look, bilbil and all”.
you really tried perming your hair? i can’t believe it.
as for the new look that The D Spot is sporting right now – of course, header is courtesy of our dear DIMAKs (you can’t charge commission now, dear, that’s direct from the artsy header creator, as “pro bono” in legalese lingo. the 3 columns is WordPress new look. my son J Angelo is fixing it now.
auee // Apr 25, 2007 at 11:50 pm
Hayy if only it’s financially realistic for me. I resort to DIY hair colouring most of the time. In the 6 years I’ve been here (UK), I went for pro-haircolouring just 3-4 times. Tindi ‘no? And I haven’t tried the spas but I want to so much.
Like Ann said pag nasa Pinas super indulge ako. Kulang na lang magpa-Belo treatment ako, which in truth e hindi malayong gawin ko.
But I’m on a makeover mission ngayon kaya I recently visited a salon for my new hairdo & I plan on getting professional pedicure/manicure on my payday. As you said I deserve it, paunti-unti lang ako para tipid hehe
sexy mom: good for you, Aue, good for you!

all of us deserve pampering once in a while. the first time i had a massage was in the spa a few months ago… courtesy of my tita! =)ang sakit ng katawan ko at first pero after that, hayyy, sobrang relaxed. =) i’d never let another person do my pedicure though.
chase // Apr 26, 2007 at 2:52 am
Sometimes I do DIY but usually I prefer to go salons here since my busy sched doesnt allow me to indulge DIY anyway. I love the new look of this blog btw. Hot!
sexy mom: Oh, Chase! what timing! immediately after reading your post and commenting on it, i saw your comment. meaning, we were reading each other’s post at the same time! the new look–courtesy of my son J Angelo (of The J Spot), and the header–have you noticed? courtesy of DIMAKS of alt+ctrl+del.

i do DIY with my pedicure and hair dye. just can’t afford someone doing those for me.
sexy mom: we can do it here, because it is affordable! everyone does, when they return to Manila.
Toni // Apr 26, 2007 at 3:35 am
Yup you are so right about this post! We deserve that treat
I like your new lay out by the way.
Belle // Apr 26, 2007 at 9:00 am
Dine, with my hair, i leave it in the hands of the professionals. it totally change your whole look. $75 + $20 tip is worth it. the rest, i do it myself to save money.
salen // Apr 26, 2007 at 11:42 am
I do DIY especially in colouring my hair, it’s more practical, since my hair grow up fast! Thank God, I still get compliments even from my hairstylist, cause it looks like a pro daw (pantay hanggang roots!)
My manicure and pedicure, I usually do this on my own too but I have since given up cause it’s sooo bacbreaking!
Massage? Of course, I leave it up to the PRO. And I especially like it when it’s done at home. I call HOME Spa for that, they’re good!
By the way, I like the new look of your blog! Mine’s still in the works! hehehe!
sexy mom: lucky you, you can do your hair! for many, like me, we are hopeless in that sense.
Shoshana // Apr 26, 2007 at 1:11 pm
It depends on how agile and “crafty” one is. I know someone who can do it better than the pros, so for her, it’s pampering. For me, who’s missing that genetic code which will do this “girly” stuff properly, it’s a disaster.
Pampering for me means someone doing my feet and I can still hold my book to read. Or better yet, an uninterrupted three hours in the afternoon in my favorite corner with my favorite book doing nothing but reading.
Add a husband’s head on my lap, or a non-jumpy child also reading next to me…and there you have a picture of my perfect pampering.
Everything else, I leave to the pros.
sexy mom: yes, small pleasures, they are pamperings, too
verns // Apr 26, 2007 at 2:03 pm
ahhhhh I practice DIY when I fix things in our small apartment but when it comes to stuff you mentioned, I actually never tried doing it myself. I prefer to just go to a spa/salon. You’re right. It’s not called pampering if you DIY.
sexy mom: oh, yes, the spa/salon, esp during a hot summer day!
malaya // Apr 26, 2007 at 2:24 pm
I agree. We are worth more than “Do it yourself.”
sexy mom: yes, we are worth more than DIY.
Daphne // Apr 26, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Yes we all deserve our lil pampering treats
I have mine like once a month, mostly just hair treatment like hot oil or a trim. Yes I think I am the only one left in the country who still goes for hot oil hair treatment and has never rebonded my wavy curls. Hehehe. I don’t go for manicures nor pedicures I don’t like someone touching my feet kasi.
Nice clean new layout
Rach // Apr 26, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Hi Dine. I certainly agree! We all deserve a little pampering time and the best way to have it is to just sit back and relax while someone else tends to you.
My usual pampering is a trip to Rever Salon for a haircut, eyebrow threading, hair color and occasional pedicure. I rarely have manicures. That one I like to do by myself. I also enjoy having facials.
BTW, love the new template.
Thanks for your comments on my blog. I really appreciate that you take time to visit even though you’ve been busy lately.
This is off topic but I was at Salen’s blog earlier and read your comment. I’m sorry to hear about your officemate’s son (who got bitten by a dog). It’s disturbing how you said he lost most of his nose. So sad. Hope he got the best medical attention. Wishing him well.
Tiffany // Apr 26, 2007 at 6:52 pm
You changed your layout! Wahhh Cute.
Amen to what you said! That’s why I’ve never tried any ineffective DIY’s
sexy mom: you noticed, too!

When my baby sis and teenage daughter (that woould be bibs) were still in Manila, everytime there is an occassion and when I sent them gifts, the first thing they hit was spa and foot spa and all kinds personal relaxations.
Now in the states, it is the Grocery stores. and they just do each other manicures and pedicures. At least it keeps the mother and daughter much closer.
carey // Apr 26, 2007 at 9:05 pm
uy, guess what. i just came from a hair salon and had my long hair cut in layers. it feels good! i’ll be back for some hot oil treatment next week. this post is so encouraging for me. we do need to be pampered sometimes. thanks so much for this post tita!
btw, your new layout looks so professional. naks!
and congrats for being a SOB, you deserve it!

I have a memory about DIY pampering.
6 years ago I was trying to straighten my curly hair by myself in the bathroom.
My hair was getting worse and I cut my hair.
In many cases DIY doesn’t work!
sexy mom: hi, Catalyst, thanks for visiting. hair straightening really should be done by experts. and hey, thanks for sharing the korean biryani recipe.
pining // Apr 27, 2007 at 12:38 am
how I wish…! I’m afraid I have to stick to DIYing for a long while

We really need to pamper ourselves once in a while. For me, having my regular footspa or
biolage for my hair is pampering myself…
oh, add to it buying books that i love to read… plus magazines…eat out just by myself… having coffee and toasts at a coffee shop… dami pala.
sexy mom: i do indulge, too, in small pleasures.

I love this entry! There really is no such as DIY Pampering. Haha! I’d rather have someone else do the pampering. Trying to pamper myself stresses me out!
