WYSIWYG with Happy Slip

By now, Christine Gambito aka Happy Slip would have been back to the USA. But definitely, she has left a mark in the hearts of many Filipinos—those who have known her just recently (through her trips around the country and TV guestings) or to the many who have been her fans for a long time now. It was only last Thursday, 7 February, that I got to meet her in person at Happy Slip’s Meet and Greet organized by Mag:net and Yehey, but this early I look forward to her promise to return to the country at least once a year—she has been named as an Ambassadress by the Dept of Tourism.

Just for an introduction on my first encounter of Happy Slip—remember the “toothbrush” episode in Morning Meest? Curious why the kids were giggling, I joined them. They were giggling because finally they said they understood (although what they were watching had a different reason after all) why I have always insisted on what many of my friends called a weird idea—FOR YEARS NOW, I HAVE INSISTED THAT ALL TOOTHBRUSHES BE KEPT IN ONE CORNER OF THE REFRIGERATOR! Christine answered the very same question, “Why do you brush your teeth in the kitchen?”.

Some of my friends have ridiculed me (it’s as if toothbrushes are dirty!), found it weird, when I told them about it. Well it was the best place—the most sanitary place to keep toothbruses. Over the years, everyone in my household has gotten used to it. I am not sure, though, if any of my friends followed suit, when I explained to them that one hairy mouse, cockroach or two could find its/their way in the toilet or bathroom (where most people kept their toothbrushes) whatever you want to call it, no matter how clean one perceived his/her toilet or bathroom to be. I even find houses where its inhabitants leave their toothbrushes bare, without any covering in their toilets or bathrooms.

And I was vindicated. That “toothbrush” episode screamed loud of the gaseous effects, reminiscent of the Glorietta 2 incident. Why oh why do they insist that the explosion was caused by the many gases that have interacted or mixed together? Anyhow, toothbrushes should be many meters away from the bathroom or toilet…oh well, enough of this toilet thingey.

Anyway, that was the start of my happy days watching Happy Slip, such that I have become a fan, not only because of her wit and humor, but because her segments were so close to the heart of every Filipina (an auntie, a mommy, a lola, and a daughter) and Filipino, the little stories, the traditions that we have been brought up to, and the humor that is brought out from the ordinary. With Happy Slip, WYSIWYG—What You See is What You Get—creativity, merry laughter, positivity, inside and out, with no pretensions.

Happy Slip—the bigger picture, not anymore in the confines of my Mac, but in person. It was fun seeing her the way she was in you tube, but what touched me was how she naturally shared and spoke of how God has given each one of us our own creativity—and her advice to find it, share it with the next person, with the world. She was not ashamed of being cheesy, for being emo while talking of God’s kindness and immense blessings, His gift of creativity in each and every person. Materialism is nothing, it is the inner peace and joy that matter, she shared. She was not acting spiritual nor holier than though, not preaching, she was only being herself, brimming with energy, joy and positivity—living true to being HAPPY Slip.

Christine is an inspiration, a lesson in humility, for her being down-to-earth. And I was humbled. I who have always prided myself for my positivity and vibrancy would sometimes find myself downed by insecurities and doubts. Really, it is a choice, what do I really want in life? To be happy or not? The former, of course. To be happy, to live life, like Happy Slip!

By the way, Josh Verdes, Christine’s cousin was there. He also has his own fan base among the youth and the not so young. Again, thanks to Yehey, twas an infectious afternoon, such that cool CEO Donald Lim himself took our pictures, with Noemi, Jane Jonas. He also posed with us, Annalyn included. Tin Mandigma, editor of Filipiniana.net joined us.

Hahahaha, Dine, ikaw rin pala kitchen tooth brusher ha? Ours are in the bathroom but far from the bowl and with covers. The kids’ toothbrushes are on a rolling tray OUTSIDE the bathroom. Precisely for the exact same reason——the MEEST

I had a wonderful time with you at mag:net (and after). Sa ulit!
