This is an update of an earlier post on the 9 September Ateneo vs La Salle Game

I call it a classic game. From start to finish—it was anyone’s game. Seven minutes in the the 1st quarter, Ateneo was winning 13-3, and before anyone knew it, La Salle won the 1st quarter by 6 points (21-15).

Few minutes from the start of the second quarter found the two teams in a tie, but again La Salle finished it with their biggest lead of 13 points, at 40-33.

Ateneo finished off the 3rd quarter, with a lead of 1 point (65-64).

The 4th quarter was an exchange of points, with ties in between, sometimes Ateneo winning by 1 point, sometimes La Salle, with the final shot by La Salle, almost tying the score for a 2-minute extension. La Salle thought, just really thought that they have tied the game, but alas! Their last shot was a milli-second short from the buzzer.

After what seemed like a long long time (though it was only maybe 1 or 2 minutes), Ateneo was finally declared the winner, with a score of 89 for Ateneo and 87 for La Salle.

It was indeed a great game, kudos to the players of both teams who played well. Read more about the game here.

I am only a spectator, not an expert in basketball, but why was I feeling all the time that the referees were biased, calling one foul after another on the Ateneo players, but were kinda soft on La Salle?

And, ohhhh, as usual the cheerings made the games merrier, more exciting. Again another question in mind—why does Ateneo let La Salle mock them? just listening (and not cheering back) at La Salle’s “Beat Ateneo” cheers and their waves. Did the silent treatment just mean—go, mock us, in the end—we will be the winners.

Again, the Mama Mary brigade caps their prayers with a thank you—a sweet sweet victory one day after Mama Mary’s birthday.

By the way, I predicted an Ateneo win by 3 points (1 point short of the 2-point win).

I and most members of my family were there at the Araneta. It was indeed ONE BIG FIGHT

GOOD NEWS! and take note of this, even though it has been announced days before that tickets have been sold out, TICKETNET WILL BE SELLING 1,000 GENERAL PATRONAGE TICKETS (yes, 1,000 general patronage tickets) IN THE TICKETNET BOOTHS AT THE ARANETA FROM 9:00 IN THE MORNING ON SUNDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER. NOT BAD, good enough.

Tomorow, Sunday everything will again take a back seat, as it always happens in every Ateneo-La Salle Games at the UAAP. The 16,000-capacity Big Dome will be filled to the rafters, MRT and LRT couches will be filled—unloading passengers at the Cubao Station, and all parking slots filled to the brim in the Gateway/Farmers’ Market area, spilling over to Aurora Blvd hours before the game. All roads lead to the Great Dome. It will be a sea of blue in one side of the Big Dome and a sea of green on the other side, with most of both schools’ bigwigs and alumni in attendance. It will be another fiesta with blaring drums, rah-rahs and cheers. It will be no surprise if spectators are at their toes at all times, standing rather than sitting down. It will be tense…till the last minute after the respective alma mater songs are sung with hands raised high in the air. SUCH IS THE ATMOSPHERE in every Ateneo-La Salle UAAP game.

Ateneo-La Salle fans and even plain spectators (who like watching the 2 teams fight in the court) who are not the Araneta will go to restaurants boasting of big screens, fine food and drinks, some in their favorite hang outs by the Katipunan area for Ateneo fans and the Taft Area for La Salle fans (don’t make the mistake of crossing over), while others would satisfy themselves in the comforts of home—anywhere where the games could be watched on live TV. And I guess, as in the past both schools will put up their big screens for the live basketball game.

24 more hours to go, and everyone is jittery. Everyone cannot wait for 4 pm to come—EVERYONE AWAITS THE GAME. It’s like it’s the only game that matters for most of Ateneo and La Salle fans.

We got tickets—we’re gonna watch the game LIVE!

I am for Ateneo! GO ATENEO ONE BIG FIGHT My wild bet is that Ateneo will win by 3 points.

How about you? What is your bet? What do you think will be the results?

Sorry to disappoint you. I guess it would be La Salle over Ateneo this time, on extension, ateneo leads by 1 point at the dying second but due to a freak fowl by ateneo, la salle would sink the 2 and a win by just one.

On their next encounter (elimination round) to face UE, wala pa ako forecast kasi naka focus ang radar ko sa upcoming game bukas.

At naging manghuhula pa ako no?

Anyways, good luck to your team and my son’s too.

SexyMom: you might be disappointed, myepinOy! Ateneo’s gonna win!

    SexyMom: yehey, Arliss…GO ATENEO!

Ummm…myepinoy…what is a freak fowl? Is that like a chicken with 3 legs? Just asking…hehehe :)

My fearless forecast…Ateneo by 2 or 5. And not in overtime. Long and Arao to lead the team!! Long will attempt another fadeaway shot ala Kobe and will sink it :)

Dine, please post right away after the game. I’m not in the country and we don’t have TFC so I won’t be able to watch. I bought a “sarap maging atenista” shirt pa naman :(

SexyMom: i will Cookie, i will!

    Great game!

We won! We won! But I wont be surprised if the guys at DLSU file a complaint and ask that Rico’s final shot be considered. Nonetheless, it was a great game for both teams. La Salle was very very competitive. Congratulations to the Green Archers and the winner of the game, the Blue Eagles. :)

Dine, I think some of your clairvoyance might have rubbed off on me. My prediction of Ateneo winning by 2 was CORRECT :)

sexy mom, i don’t follow college basketball, but i do with professional NBA as we have our own team, the Raptors. Usually the Refs are biased towards the hometeam, somehow, because they don’t want the crowd to boo and insults them and heckle them, but it will even out once the hometeam visit the others. so all is fair in love and basketball…

Hi Tita Dine! I watched the Ateneo-La Salle game too but only on TV and was super duper happy that Ateneo won! I graduated from ADMU in 1991 with an AB Communication degree. During my freshman and sophomore years, we were the basketball champions and I remember watching some of the games and screaming my lungs out Yeah, it was a great game yesterday; both schools were really scrambling and hustling. And I always like to watch close games rather than one-sided matches. I bet you had fun cheering and bonding with your family :)
Btw, did you receive the magazine I sent you? Hope you did.

Phew! It was THAT close to an overtime!

I got to watch the replay with C1, Dine. And kahit alam na namin ang outcome, sigaw parin kami, hehe. Ang babaw!

Good thing for technology and slow mo’s. At least hindi na ma-contest who actually won. Frame by frame we watched the clock and the shot by La Salle. Kapos sa oras!

    YEY! ONE BIG FIGHT…..ATENEO Woohooooooo!

  10. atenista on September 16th, 2007 10:17 pm

my prediction… La Salle will beat Ateneo by as much as 6 points this time around. That’s how strong the La Salle team is. That win by Ateneo was a fluke.
