Sleeping through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I’ll go straight to the point—I slept through the whole length of the movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!

Yes, I slept! And before anyone persecutes me, or judges me, or feels bad with my behaviour (hi, Bella!), let me explain.

I had 6 tickets (courtesy of Bella), I made arrangements for the 4 kids (the other 2 had already set later dates to watch the movie) to be home by 6 pm, so that we could leave for SM Mega Mall by 6:30 and reach there before the 7:30 pm screening, and made arrangements with hubby to join us.

.

Hubby was early, found out that the venue has been moved from Cinema 2 to Cinema 5, and to his surprise—screening was scheduled at 8:30! That meant, we all had to be in queue (meaning standing up in line) for a whole hour, which we could have spent for other more important things. But we were patient, we knew we would enjoy the movie. I spent some time taking pictures of Alan Jr with “The Simpsons”, a cool spot with large replicas of Homer, Maggie, Lisa and Bart Simpson (another movie to watch).

We were just very glad to be let in at last. There was a short prayer, an introduction—fund raising project for the UP XDS Association, Inc.’s Scholarship Program, and the Philippine National Anthem. It was the first time I saw this version—it was produced by ABS CBN, showcasing their Kapamilya Talents. I was not impressed, rather, I would rather see the old version that has been shown in the past. Imagine the distraction—one tends to identify the stars, like Kris, Maricel, Dolphy, Piolo, etc., rather than trying to feel the meaning of the National Anthem.

Then the movie started. Imediately, I felt the excitement of my kids, being able to relate with the movie Unfortunately, for me, I was not able to see the 3rd and 4th releases, so I was kinda lost somewhere. Then, slowly, slowly, sleep took over, if I remember right, I was even snoring in between. Before I knew it, I was being told that we had to go, the movie was over.

Monica who came from school in Rockwell was already waiting outside. She was excited about my “review of the movie”. I told her the truth, her initial reaction was—money down the drain, and what will Tita Bella feel about it? She would be extremely disappointed! While many others would have grabbed the opportunity, while others could not get tickets on opening day, I, who was lucky enough—just slept through the movie!

No Bella, please do not be disappointed with me. Please be happy for me because that sleep was one of the best sleeps I had in days! It was therapy, much more than what an hour’s massage could do, or a spa visit. It was a restful sleep—I woke up refreshed!

Watching Sleeping through the movie was all worth it—I was physically with the kids at SM Cinema 5. And the kids immensely enjoyed the movie. My only regret is that I missed Ralph Fiennes as the evil Voldemort, who is one of my favorite actors (he starred in the movies that I watched, and did not sleep through—End of the Affair, Schindler’s List, Maid in Manhattan, and many others).

For now, let me just be content in BA’s review, let me just be content in watching the movie later. Again, thanks, Bella, we all had a good time!

  2. Christianne on July 13th, 2007 1:53 am

Hehe, sayang naman! If only I could’ve teleported to the Philippines and watched the movie in your place.

SexyMom: many would have wanted that reserved seating ticket, you know. but it was all worth it, accompanying the children who were really excited about the movie.

  3. vk on July 13th, 2007 1:54 am

  4. myepinoy on July 13th, 2007 5:06 am

ha ha ha. the title of this post should have been, Harry Potter, I shall return.

Anyhow, congratulations. Salamat kay harry potter, para kang tumama sa lotto. lol

SexyMom: a nice title you suggested, and thanks to HP for that good sleep.

  5. jhay on July 13th, 2007 5:59 am

Haven’t seen the movie partly because I’m not an HP fan. I only read one book in the series and it was the of the same title as this new Potter film.

No one could blame you, and I’m not saying this in a negative way, but if you’re not into a movie, you’d most certainly for sure sleep through it. Just like what my father does every time he joins us for a movie trip.

Strange thing is, he enjoys watching them at home via DVDs. ;)

SexyMom: i, too, enjoy watching on DVD the movies that i have missed.

  6. dimaks on July 13th, 2007 6:16 am

a wiser way to take the time with kids.. hearing the excitement and other details of the movie’s story from your kids is another way i think, for a busy and energetic mom.

SexyMom: the younger uns would not have watched at that time of night had i not been with them, so it was still worth it coming with them.

  7. Belle on July 13th, 2007 8:13 am

Steffi, my daughter, wasn’t pleased with the movie either. she said, the book which she took the time to finish reading before the movie, was more fun and exciting. she came home disappointed.

and what was the reason for the wait? 8:30 was rather late for you and your family especially it was school day the following day. you know what Dine, i am glad i didn’t join my kids to watch the movie because i have the tendency to fall asleep, too especially watching a movie i have no clue about. i haven’t watched any Harry Potter movies in my whole life.

i bet you felt recharged after almost two hours of nap. take care…

SexyMom: if it is any consolation for the 2 of us, YES Belle, i felt recharged. THANKS once again.

  8. Belle on July 13th, 2007 8:24 am

    This is Steffi, Bella’s daughter.

You know, I thought the movie was okay. This is because I’m quite partial to the books. You see, I have a certain idea of how the school, characters, settings, etc. should look like, and sometimes my idea and the director’s idea don’t match up! Needless to say, it’s still neat to see our favorite story flashing up on the screen.

SexyMom: Hi, Steffi, am so pleased to hear from you! My daughter, Monica says, “The ones who only watch the HP movies, but never read the books, are missing out a lot. It’s different when you’re reading the book, it’s like in your mind, you’re the director of your own movie!” Monica will watch the movie this weekend. In the meantime, my kids are keenly awaiting for the 7th book.

  9. noemi on July 13th, 2007 9:05 am

haha. don’t worry. you are not alone. marielle was with her friend’s family and she said that her friend’s parents slept most of the time. then they woke up to ask what happened. I wonder if that will happen to me.

    SexyMom: i wonder, too.

  10. Manila Mom on July 13th, 2007 10:25 am

We haven’t seen the movie yet because our eldest had too much school stuff to do. Hopefully, we’ll catch it tonight.

I had a good laugh at your description of yourself, though. My hubby does that all the time! We just nudge him when he starts snoring, haha! But it’s time well spent indeed because if we were at home he would be working at the computer instead of sleeping – like you would, I guess :D So without the computer, you get the much-needed sleep.

I don’t think I’ll be nodding off at Harry Potter, though. I agree the books are better – movie versions always pale in comparison – but I’ve watched the actors and actresses grow up in these films (even the second leads) and I enjoy seeing the changes in them. They all look so grown up in the trailer and in magazines. I can’t wait to see more of them. It’s like seeing your friends’ kids growing up.

SexyMom: trues, true, like seeing your friends’ kids grow up, but i was just really really tired at that time.

  11. carlotta on July 13th, 2007 10:58 am

talagang nakatulog po kayo ha… hehehe.

i hope i won’t be watching this installment just 5 rows from the screen as i have done with the past hp movies. =)

SexyMom: maybe if you reserve seats early, you will have a better chance of getting the good seats.

  12. Em Dy on July 13th, 2007 2:23 pm

Hi Sexy Mom. I know just how you feel. No matter how great the movie may be or how enthusiastic you are about seeing it, if you haven’t really rested you’d end up dozing off. I slept through Jurassic Park (my favorite movie!) and Lord of the Rings too. Somehow, the combination of an airconditioned dark theater and no talking lulls one to sleep. And they’ve made it easier to sleep too. Those lazy boys and theater seats rock.

SexyMom: yes, the ambiance, the theater seats and all—a formula for good sleep.

  13. Kyels on July 13th, 2007 4:54 pm

I’ve yet to watch it and I hope it was good though. I saw the First Look of it via Astro and it seems nice but I do admit that the books are definitely better.

    ;)

SexyMom: my kids like the books more, but it was also worth it for them to watch the movie.

  14. netherchild on July 13th, 2007 5:30 pm

now that was spectacular. it will make a big headline.

“sleeping over harry’s not so successful order of the phoenix”

i had my friends to answer a survey of how harry potter made it this year. all of them said its below 5 ratings. they said many things have been deducted from the book. if you summarized the movie, it will only total to 50 page, not even half of J.K Rowlings fifth masterpiece.

SexyMom: yes, and after a week, the cinemas are still full.

  15. Paris on July 13th, 2007 6:16 pm

I’ve read the book. Kaya parang wala akong gana panoorin :D

SexyMom: hmmm, my kids like reading and watching.

  16. Lazarus on July 13th, 2007 7:36 pm

What an honest review! he he he. The important thing is, the rest of the family enjoyed.

SexyMom: an honest review, indeed, of how i slept and snored through the movie.

  17. julie on July 13th, 2007 7:54 pm

    :D

Julian has been watching the dvds of the first four movies since last week. Said he wants to watch the fifth. I just hope we can go to a cinema next week since most are full with reserved tickets. Maybe next week.

At least you enjoyed, your sleep that is, :)

SexyMom: wait a few more days—cinemas are full, and to think i slept through the movie.

  18. pining on July 14th, 2007 12:12 am

never mind, you can see it again I’m sure :-)
at least you had a good snore….

SexyMom: ha ha ha! a pretty good one, gosh, am kinda embarrassed.

  19. carey on July 14th, 2007 4:16 am

ako naman, i haven’t slept in a movie house yet. ma-try nga. hehehe…

btw, please visit my site. i have a surprise for you. check it out here:
    http://ideasnpink.i.ph/blogs/ideasnpink/?p=222

SexyMom: maybe, it will just come—sleep in a movie after a tiring day! and thanks for the thinking award, dear!

  20. Carlota on July 14th, 2007 8:19 am

hehehe…you serious? last time I did too. oppsss…pero nag enjoy talaga si Julie ko. Ok lang may DVD naman you can catch up!

    Happy weekend.

    SexyMom: serious, indeed!

  21. fruityoaty on July 14th, 2007 8:33 am

Sleeping in the theatre… Oh, I can relate to that. One time, as I was watching a stage production of “Blood Brothers” in the evening, I actually fell asleep. I came from work (so tired) straight to the theatre.

In a pivotal scene where one of the brothers fire a gun at his brother… that loud bang jolted me from my deep sleep! I screamed, “Oh my God! What” Everyone looked at me and I imagine the stage actors heard me, too!

It was so embarrassing! I just sunk into my seat for the rest of the play. :D

SexyMom: that was really really embarrassing! and it was in a theater—not a movie house!

  22. chateau on July 14th, 2007 2:03 pm

hahaha, Dine! The sleep spell has not been broken yet??? But I’m glad you were able to relax at the cinema. :D
    have a great weekend.

    SexyMom: it was relaxing, Chats.

  23. verns on July 14th, 2007 3:18 pm

hahahaha…yung katabi ko nakatulog din and he was also snoring. Anyway the HP movie was, oh well, same as usual, kulang ng emotion. That’s my only complain.

Yung mga dagdag-bawas, you can’t avoid those things coz the whole story can’t fit in a two and a half hour movie..but the way it’s directed, I just feel like it lacks drama/emotion. Sayang…

In the book, Harry was so frustrated that he wasn’t in the loop about the Order of the Phoenix and you can really feel his frustration while reading the book. But in the movie..parang hindi man lang napakita yung sobrang inis nya…oh well :)

SexyMom: my kids say so about the movie vs book.

yung katabi must have been ME?

  24. annamanila on July 14th, 2007 4:24 pm

Awww .. you slept through a movie everybody was lining up for!

But you did say you were able to get a good sleep therapy .. better than a massage. Sosyal! And a conversation piece. Bloggable pa.

Haven’t slept through a movie .. never slept in the car. Never slept where I am not supposed to sleep. When i start doing that, what does it imply kaya? hahaha

SexyMom: i read somewhere what these symptoms imply! shhhhh

  25. kimmy on July 14th, 2007 8:55 pm

best sleep in days, eh? it’s funny that you got it, of all places, in a movie theater!

    SexyMom: ambiance, maybe?

  26. auee on July 14th, 2007 9:16 pm

Better a movie… my hubby slept thru the Nutcracker ballet! Nakakahiya.
    :-P

I am waiting for the HP7 book & am trying to figure out how I can see the film seeing as my 3-year old cannot come.

SexyMom: dvd? i hope hubby did not snore, it would have been embarrassing.

  27. Mari on July 15th, 2007 5:19 am

“The ones who only watch the HP movies, but never read the books, are missing out a lot. It’s different when you’re reading the book, it’s like in your mind, you’re the director of your own movie!” I get disappointed when I’ve read the book and then watched the movie and find that a lot have been changed. But, I’ve heard from friends that it isn’t so in Harry Potter. Have they changed it this time? Oops, I think, I’m asking the wrong person. He he he

SexyMom: ooops, yes. but my kids can tell.

  28. chase on July 15th, 2007 5:32 am

Well I only sleep in some movie if I have seen it twice. But no way on a HP movie hehehehehe

SexyMom: my kids feel the same with you, Chase.

  30. tofubaby on July 15th, 2007 6:58 am

Likewise here. I always say the story in the book is always better than the movie. Perhaps there are some exception but I couldn’t remember one.

Haven’t watched the latest HP though. Perhaps because I detest Umbridge in the book.

I’m looking forward though on the release of the last book on Saturday, July 21. That is the event I can’t wait for. Hehehehe

SexyMom: my kids are also excited about the book.

  31. Jane on July 15th, 2007 6:40 pm

Hahahaha, Dine. Nakatulog ka pala! And here I was thinking all the time that everyone has seen it but me. At least you got your beauty sleep…which is more important!

We are all HP fans in this house. We have all the books and original DVDs as well (the kids won’t settle for less!). And come July 21 when Book 7 is released here, you can be sure I will be reading it along with the 4 kids. I get homecourt advantage. I can read the book while they’re in school. Hehehe.

Catch it on DVD nalang when it comes out in a few months. As for me, will wait it out a few more days so that when we watch Order of the Phoenix, we would have the luxury of choosing our seats.

SexyMom: i was surprised when i went to watch another movie—8 out of 10 cinemas were showing HP, and the lines for tickets were long long lines! my book-loving kids agree with you. they are looking forward, too, for the release of the book on the 21st.

  32. Zherwin on July 16th, 2007 3:56 pm

i am not really disappointed with the film but i am looking for more, the moment harry and cho chang kissed was one of the highlights in the book, you can feel the emotions, including the awkwardness and anything in between, but in the movie, it was just that.

oh, and there’s no quidditch (ron was the supposed goalkeeper), and no mention (well, except for the badge) of ron and hermione being prefects. and a lot more.

SexyMom: same observation by my book-loving kids.

  33. betty on July 22nd, 2007 8:18 pm

You should not apologize for sleeping , you probably were bored. I found the film also boring and lacks some cohesiveness. Maybe its the editing, the script or maybe the story itself.

Well compared to Bruce Willis Die Hard 4 which was so thrilling you wont leave your seat till it has ended this film is really a ho hum(dream away to dream land)

SexyMom: oh, Betty, i will never sleep in a Bruce Willis movie!

  34. eric quake on July 23rd, 2007 3:59 pm

wow! you were able to sleep over the ‘every minute or so’ rambling sound of harry potter and the order of the phoenix actions. you really badly need that sleep don’t you. didn’t like da movie though, which may owe to high expectations courtesy of very good movies [spidey, shrek, etc.]
