An Afternoon Delight–A Chat with Mikki Fudolig, Her Mom and Siblings

Yesterday was another sweltering afternoon, when we decided to cool it down at the Choco Kiss Cafe, in UP Diliman. The kids were craving for cakes, pasta, and iced tea. While in the car, we were talking about Mikki Fudolig, 16 year old, youngest student to graduate from the UP in recent years and one of only two admitted to the state university without a high school diploma and without taking the UP College Admission Test. She happens to be BA’s and Marielle’s (Noemi’s daughter) classmate in Music. All the time, I was wondering—did she ever have a social life?
Immediately upon getting off the car, I asked the kids to pose in front of the Bahay ng Alumni, so that I could take their pictures. Somebody was saying “You’re against the light”. True enough, the kids were against the light, so they had to shift direction. Alan, Jr. pointed toward the direction of the woman who was talking to us, and whispered that she was with the 16 year old girl we were talking about in the car. As I was not familiar with her face, let alone know her name, I asked her, “Are you BA’s classmate?”, at the same time pointing to BA who was parking the car with Vince (a silly question, I realized later on). Rather than BA being the star at the moment, it should have been her, Mikki.
She smiled, and said yes, she was BA’s classmate. At that moment, she was just a pretty young girl to me, a teenager just like mine, Angela (16) and Pauline (14). I developed an instant liking to Mikki—she had no pretensions, no star complex, she was just like any other girl—unassuming, bubbly, smiling, happy. In fact, she was even amazed that Monica looked so young to be a 4th year law student. She and her 2 brothers could not believe it at all. They thought Monica was an undergraduate, even a high school student, perhaps.
We chatted with her, her mom and her 2 siblings, exchanged notes as if we knew each other all the time, under the sweltering heat of the sun. There must be a bond among mothers to be able to talk of anything under the sun. Her mother was amazed with how my kids are doing well in school, in the same way that I was amazed with the way she raised a child genius, and 2 young boys who seemed to be very intelligent and smart.
And the question that I had in my mind all the time since I heard about her story was answered. Monica asked her “have you attended a prom?”. Yes, she has attended a prom, and yes, she has a social life. There was small talk—she and Angela are the same age, but Angela will only be in 3rd year HS. Vincent will be 18 in September, but will only be in 4th year HS. BA has just turned 19—while he and Mikki were classmates in Music, all the time, BA thought that Mikki was also a freshman.
Did she ever drink Promil when she was a baby? No, her mother said she breastfed her and the 2 boys at least up to age 2. Which was the same with mine, Angela even up to age 3. And we both agreed that there is no truth to claim that babies fed with that certain milk formula would become child wonders or gifted children.
We said good-bye—while they were on their way home from Choco Kiss, we were on the way to Choco Kiss for our snacks. We were very happy to have met Mikki and her family, happier even, to know a down-to-earth child genius. Happy for Mikki—my fears about her missing out the fun that young ones experience have become baseless. I told her I would post an article in my blog about the afternoon delight in front of the Bahay ng Alumni in UP, and she smiled in agreement.
BA will shifting from Statistics to Physics. Who knows, Mikki, who will be teaching in the College of Physics this coming school year, might even be his teacher.
Mikki has a website, called “Take not the road less travelled” where she keeps her collection of speeches.

hi Dine,
Mikki doesn’t know me, but his father does because we belong to the same association, the UPXDS association. His father is like my big brother. Kami yong mahihirap sa UP na kung tawagin “promdi” meaning from the province.
I said to his father via our egroup email that I am proud to be one of her titas.
sexy mom: hi, Belle! me, too, am proud to be one of her titas.
by the way Dine, I copied and pasted this link and will share it in our egroup.
sexy mom: that’s cool, Belle. Mikki’s father was in their car watching us while we were chatting away.
gosh this gurl! one smiley comes to mind: http://smilies.agapeia.com/award.gif
truly gifted, truly inspirational!
huwaw this girl is amazing! i wish her all the best.
(and yeah, i also loooooooove the food at choco kiss! {ü)
sexy mom: choco kiss is an all time favorite of my family, the other one is TOSH (the old spaghetti house)
I wonder what she’ll be doing twenty years from now. She is truly a gifted person.
sexy mom: her mom said they do not do any long term planning. but for sure, she will continue her studies (not law—Mikki is not interested in law school)
is she the girl who was featured in the front page of manila bulletin (or was it inquirer) at least 4 years ago as the youngest college student in the country? and if my memory serves me right, her course was either math or physics?
I checked her blog and her speeches are really beautiful. Very immaculately written. I’ve always believed that we all have our own bright side.
[:
Good to hear that she’s a very down-to-earth girl.
sana magkaroon ako ng baby ng tulad ni mikki
pero mukhang malabo e..walang genius sa lahi namin
I thought of that too. How’s their social life? Are they studying all the time? I’ll show her site to my daughter. Thanks tita dine.
yup, she is. saw her blog.
Young and intelligent ! Hats off to her ! I’m sure she enjoys her life like any other normal teenager!
definitely a gifted child!
we have the same fear for her. But if she is happy of what her life has become, then that wouldn’t be any problem.
From your post, it does seem like she is a very down to earth person. It’s almost hard to believe that that young, sweet, smiling girl graduated with the top honors in her class.
Her valedictory speech became a rather “hot” subject for discussion in our mailing list for UP physics alumni. Not everyone agreed with her ideas (e.g. trampling new paths doesn’t always mean staying home, etc.), but it seemed that everyone agreed that she has made a prime example by opting to teach at UP after graduating. Sana madagdagan pa ang katulad niya.
she’s truly amazing! My other grandkid is also quite advance to be in grade 4 this school opening, she’s only turning 8 this August and smart as well pero di naman genius incomparable to Mikki.
You gotta admire her mom for raising a down to earth daughter and for nurturing her unique mind. I have the same notions about child geniuses and your post enlightened me. I browsed some of her speeches in the web site and she’s amazing. Thanks for sharing Dine.
Wow…truly inspirational. I will have my first baby in August and I hope he at least comes near what she has accomplished…
I read the link blog (mikkie) and find her very intelligent in her way of thinking. Her parents must be proud of her.
WIsh to have same child!
and seems she has a good heart. That makes her even more beautiful inside.
MUSTA frm france
and good evening, panalo si sarcozy as pres of France!
you were in diliman that day? ako din! but morning coz nag-soccer kme ng bro ko. hehe.
nakakabilib siya. just 16 and bs physics pa. galing niya! ako.. tama lang ang age but i even failed my math17. kahiya!
wow!shes really impressive!w/o a high school diploma and without taking the admission exam
a genious!what would she be in the future?gotta update us again,Dine
She’s so cute! She doesn’t look like a child-genius at all. She just looks like a very pretty child.
Mikki is really an admirable person… Heard all about her in the news!
Parang Doogie Howser!
i’ve read about that girl. I can only come up with one word for that kid: “unbelievable!” hehe
Rapsi, her younger brother is my daughter Trixie’s classmate in PWU-JASMSQC. I think Trixie said he is only 9 or 10 while the rest of them are 11 or 12. Guess being genuis really runs in the family. One thing though, she looks simple and does not seem to attract attention to herself.
Wow! When I read about her in the newspaper, I was really amazed. Now, reading that she’ll be teaching in U.P., too, she has become even more awesome. But I am also happy that she didn’t miss out on her social life.
Thanks for sharing the link to her site.
a great day with a genius
So it’s true.. breastfeeding is always the best
Mikki should be cherished; a Filipino icon in the making maybe?
Truly a gifted young woman—- with intelligence, goof family and friends. And FANS!
Everybody is talking about Mikki .. the child prodigy, summa cum laude graduate, 16 years old. I am glad to know she had a childhood and a social life.
Ikaw talaga, Sexy Mom, sister of serependity. And how easily you strike up an acquaintance with her and her mom! Bow. You’re now Mikki’s Tita Dine. But well, your children are gifted too. I know.
wow..child genius! I’ve never met one in person
You’re lucky Sexy Mom
at last nakita ko na si mikki, the child-wonder. inspiring ang speech nya.
Sometimes I wished I was also a gifted child. lol! That is really nice to feature about her in your blog.
That girl is BRILLIANT! And it’s great to know that she didn’t miss out on stuff socially. From what I’ve read in papers, I was painting her to be this really hardcore studious girl. From the pictures though, she looks really well-adjusted and just like any other happy student. Thanks for helping us get to know her more intimately!
Hi dine,
grabe naman ito…......
Last night, while i am writing an email to you, the TV-news about this GENIUS…..that Genius is borne…not to be created or to be learned ….ngeekkk
and I asked Bernie if this is true, sabi naman nya, Totoo daw….......GENIUS PEOPLE ARE IN BORNED….na ja….......bakit hindi sa akin nangyari or sa mga anak ko na lang sana.
Breast Feeding?,., up to 2-3 yrs, old, ay parang hindi siguro ito pwede….wala ng Genius Spices siguro at this time or sa tagal——-Ang alam ko lang while i was pregnant, kasi meron naman kaming Class for Pregnant Woman…..max. 3 mos. mag-breast feed daw…..cause sa ano ba yon, nakalimutan ko na yon First Milk?
Pero hanggang 2-3 yrs. naku kakain na yon bata…..
Totoo, ano ang pinakain natin sa anak daw natin, while they are still young.,,,,can help them to be Genius and healthy….....
ay naku, sorry po sa comments ko…...
Thanks for sharing the Post at sa mga magandang pics…...they’ve all nice posing……..
Kaya, tingnan mo yon Genius….Simple lang siya ano? pero Dangerous pala ang Utak…..That is good…...
Deep Water is quite….....
Thanks for sharing,,,,,have a pleasant Tuesday……….
Did she ever drink Promil when she was a baby?
ay sorry mali pala ako…...sorry…..
hindi ko kasi alam ito…..PROMIL….
Na-strike sa utak ko ang Promil—-German words…sorry po…......
Sascha too, i let him drink, baby milk (from Milupa)up to 2 yrs, old too…
But Kim, siguro a year lang….kaya siguro deferencia silang 2….lol
kasi i can say HE is interested in the school….....while she likes a handworks job….lol
totoo ba ito…...or in borned lang talaga….
thanks ha?
When I watched her on TV, I was amazed too at how this wisp of a girl could finish college at age 16! And yes, the first thing that entered my mind too, was: “Does she ever have a social life?” Thanks, Dine, that you met her and featured her in your blog. I feel relieved to know she indeed is having a normal life like any girl her age.
I haven’t met a certified genius in my life. She’s truly something.
Hi Dine. She’s amazing! I’m sure her parents are very proud of her remarkable achievements. It’s wonderful to know that she also has a normal social life. She is blessed to have both worlds.
She’s amazing not only because she’s intelligent, but she chose to risk everything to get ahead. It was a very dangerous move on her part. She was already intelligent and spending more time in school could’ve gave her better tools for college. But then again… she didn’t need them. High school students hardly get any physics subjects and Fudolig was only there for a couple of years.
And yeah… the speeches. Content-wise, she talked about things that aren’t even talked about. All that from a minor. INSANE.
Ay grabe Mikki is such an inspiration… that was hard work at work! I hope ill meet her someday, you were very lucky!
