A Lesson In Travel

February 2nd, 2007 by Sexy Mom · Viewed 6401 times · 32 Comments

I am submitting this poem in today’s creative writing class with Barbara Gonzales. I have not written about it, but I am in to my 4th session today (8 weekly sessions). Will write about it in succeeding posts.

A Lesson In Travel

Travel light this time, but how can I?
Official documents, bulky reports and paraphernalia
Notes, brochures, books, cds, laptop and a camera
How can I leave them, gosh, I’ll be out of work, I won’t even try!

Travel light this time, but how can I?
Clothes and suits for each field trip and meeting day
Shoes, slip ons, swimsuits, gym suits, I carry come what may
All these to match each activity, I can’t deny.

Travel light this time, but how can I?
Moisturizers, toners, beauty regimens I can’t do without
Wet towels, mascara, lipstick, cologne, an endless list, no doubt
All these to refresh me and boost my ego, how can I try?

Travel light this time, but how can I?
Chargers for laptop, cell phone, and the iPod
A nicely framed family picture, that’s not too bad
All these I carry each time to distant lands I fly.

Travel light this time, but how can I?
Throw away documents after official trip and meetings are over
But what about clothes, shoes, trinkets, make up accumulated thereafter
Sightseeing was fun, more so the shopping, my, my, my!

Now travel light this time, I dare you, if you can.

I was thinking, if I were as rich as the billionaire George Lindemann Sr., I would not even care.

nice one dine…but you always write so beautifully, remember aga’s assignments? can i join this class of creative writing?=)

  • Sexy Mom // Feb 2, 2007 at 12:14 pm

kyels – it also made me think…can i ever travel light?

  • Sexy Mom // Feb 2, 2007 at 12:19 pm

mona dear, who could forget aga’s assignments? and his blah blah blah…

as to creative writing classes, Barbara usually announces her schedules in the Philippine Star. i can give you her email address. when i go to her classes, i feel i am in another dimension – remember the pampered lasses in our classic books, those who would have tutors to guide them? it’s also an experience to be with other people who are not normally in our circle of friends and colleagues.

I am thinking, is there anything light in this world of ours? or its just a state of the mind?

  • Sexy Mom // Feb 2, 2007 at 12:39 pm

    pockets, dimaks, pockets

  • annamanila // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:01 pm

Travel light—kasi not everywhere can you find porters to carry your heavy bags for you. And baka maubos dollars mo sa tipping. :)

Travel light—don’t shop/acquire too much —u can’t bring them with you.

No extra baggage .. within or without.

Galing, dine! I knew there’s poetry inside sexy mom!

  • kate // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:17 pm

even if i could do without the external baggage, what about the ones inside? grin this poem made me think :)

can i link you up? :)

  • kimmy // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:26 pm

nice one, mommy dine. :-) traveling light really is a challenge.

  • B Srinivasa Setty // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:36 pm

It was interesting to read this

  • Prab // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:37 pm

A very good addition to your repetoire, sexy mom.

Just out of curiosity, what do they teach you in those specialized classes?

  • Sexy Mom // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:44 pm

hi, Anna – i’m learning, but slowly, i tend to forget myself.

Mr. Setty, welcome back, thanks for regularly visiting my site.

Prab – one thing i learned from this class is the art of clustering. you write down in paper a focusing word, then thoughts, ideas, key words, related words, prior to writing. It is also using the right brain (bringing out the creative juices), not the left brain (the logical, the schooled).

  • Sexy Mom // Feb 2, 2007 at 1:56 pm

kate – thanks for the link! as to internal luggage, that will really be a challenge

yes, kimmy, each flight is a challenge

  • Belle // Feb 2, 2007 at 2:01 pm

good one Dine! I love it! I wish I was retired like you so I can take fun classes, too, like creative writing and photography. In fact, I have mentioned it one time to my hubby that I would like to take a lesson in creative writing at night because I work during the day.

  • carey // Feb 2, 2007 at 2:03 pm

    i like the poem! claps

it’s difficult to travel light, but i try to do so when i’m traveling alone…
yeah, when i go shopping on a trip, i try to remember that each item i buy would mean an additional weight to my baggage, so there are really some nice stuff we can’t buy and bring home or else we pay for the excess baggage. sigh.

  • Lazarus // Feb 2, 2007 at 6:10 pm

As I focused myself on the thought of travelling light, aren’t we supposed to travel light? We came to this world with nothing, and we will bring nothing on our last travel.

  • rhodora // Feb 2, 2007 at 9:28 pm

You know, sexymom, you should be called “kikay mom’! LOL! Even in your poetry, you can’t leave out your mascara. hehe.

This is a very nice poem though. I wish I could attend such creative writing class too, or what I’ve been dreaming of – scriptwriting workshops. No such thing here in our small city. :(

  • jing // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:31 pm

timely for me… but i will dare… IF I CAN LOL!

  • dimaks // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:50 pm

Ahh yes, the pockets.. they can both make life light and heavy :)

  • niceheart // Feb 2, 2007 at 10:53 pm

I don’t travel that much, hey I haven’t travelled in a long time. :) But I guess it’s really harder to travel light nowadays. Too many things that you need.

    Nice poem, btw. :)

  • Leah // Feb 2, 2007 at 11:16 pm

its nice to know that you continue to learn. I like you poem.

Travelling light will happen in the future when we can just beam all our stuff into our destination, including ourselves (ala Startrek)

  • ethel // Feb 3, 2007 at 1:42 am

  • Raquel // Feb 3, 2007 at 12:54 pm

    Hi Dine,

    Very interesting poem!

I consider myself as a heavy traveler. Hubby appreciate it too.

  • analyse // Feb 3, 2007 at 6:50 pm

im a light traveler, but not with louna.. on business trips, i’m always below 10kg (without the laptop), i dont bring docs, i have everything in my laptop and a CD as a backup..

    love your poem..well written!

  • Chateau // Feb 3, 2007 at 9:41 pm

Only my husband can travel light- he hates lugging around huge bags. As for me, it felt like reading my own checklist as i read your poem!

thanks for dropping by my blog!

  • maripe // Feb 5, 2007 at 3:54 pm

travel light. It is a blessing for me when i return home from trip. My sons (4) are not happy with my taste… so lahat ng space is for me. My sons have suffered wearing clothes of my choice for the last 20 years so may advantage din na hindi type ng mga anak ang mommy’s choice. The solution is I let my other sons choose for their brothers.. mothers cannot afford to return home na walang pasalubong kahit one pc of shirt. light on the pocket and luggage.

  • Em Dy // Jun 19, 2007 at 11:29 am

Thanks for sharing this, Sexy Mom. Ang galing. Most of your items are in my packing list too but I usually leave the laptop behind unless it’s a work-related trip. I’ve never travelled with a picture frame of my family though. That’s a nice touch.

SexyMom: because, my dear, most of my travels were work-related. imagine the tons and tons of reports we had to generate within a short period of time, and then discuss them with the governments (memorandum of understanding, aide memoire, plans of actions, etc)

    Dine,

OK ba yung classes ni Barbara Gonzales? I want to attend, do you have her email address?

    Anton
