IT WAS ONE BIG FIGHT ATENEO LORDS OVER LA SALLE, 80 – 77

We were not able to make it to the Araneta, the first time we are not watching ADMU vs DLSU live since the last season. Daughter Monica was banned from watching the games—she was shunned to a no TV room. In the past, whenever she watched ADMU games, Ateneo would always lose. Now, she gamely agreed not to watch (she’ll just watch the replay tonight), although she was tempted, hearing the shouts and shrieks of the people in the house. Everytime she would come out of the room, she would be admonished and asked to cover her eyes and ears. Yes—everyone was serious about this, especially when during the last 2minutes of the game, ADMU and DLSU were exchanging points for points, and it was finally settled as a TIE, to go for a 2-minute extension.

The extension was Ateneo’s game, with DLSU missing points. Ateneo gained its largest lead during the tie—4 points, a few seconds before time. Admittedly, DLSU did well, keeping Ateneo fans at the edge of their seats or on their toes. It was a riot here at home, shrieks and shouts heard from across the street, I guess.
All the time, I was muti-tasking, watching the games, doing some work, twittering (kinda live blogging) exchanging tweets with Jane, another Ateneo supporter, whose heart almost skipped a beat, and who held her breath, seemingly longer than Houdini. I was G-chatting with Aileen (who was rooting for DLSU, who was at the Podium, getting ready for the Yehey dinner (so sorry, I had to cancel).

Because Ateneo won, Monica in Law School will not have a quiz on Monday. :)

GO ATENEO

All tickets have been sold out, but Ticketnet says their booths will be open for General Admission seats at 9 o’clock on Thursday, 26 July. I don’t mind sitting, nay standing there, if my sons will not be able to secure tickets for better seats.

Yes, on Thursday, everything will come to a stand still at 4 pm. Again, blue and green will rule the Araneta Coliseum. It will be another spectacle—half of the 13,000-person capacity coliseum will be a sea of blue, the other half a sea of green green. It will be college basketball in its best. Oh well, it will not anymore just be basketball, as both schools will be fiercely fighting against each other as in the past years. In the end, no matter which school wins, each team will still be brimming with pride, each spectator so proud of his and her school.

Of course, my family will be wearing blue! We have long been waiting for this. GO ATENEO!

Another Exciting Family Affair

Yesterday was the opening of UAAP Season 70. Now, again, the family has reason to get together again—simply put, to watch basketball. Everything takes a backseat, no gimmicks, no appointments, even blogging (or so it becomes live blogging), yes, even homework is done either in advance or after the games. We watch the games on TV, on site at the Araneta, and during championships when tickets are hard to get, in restaurants or schools where there is wide screen.

While writing this post, I can hear my boys, including my mom and the girls, cheering, cajoling, clapping shouting—UAAP basketball brings out the best, sometimes worst, in each one. All television sets in the house are tuned in to Studio 23. In between, shouts of One Big Fight! and Get that ball! Junk food, ice cream, snacks galore, family is simply enjoying.

In the first quarter game between Adamson and Ateneo, everyone at home was disappointed when Adamson was winning, 11-0. Vince, though disappointed, calmed down. I heard him say, “Well, at least I am from the Ateneo.” This is how fierce Ateneans, or the other university students who are part of UAAP for that matter, defend their schools.

Last 2 minutes, it is chaos in the house, Adamson and Ateneo are tied at 51 all. Chris Tiu puts in 2 free shots, and in the last 3 seconds, Adamson’s Cabahug shoots in for 2 points. It is a real tie! 53 all, 2 minutes extension. This even gave Ateneo more time to score points.

It is only the beginning of the season, but everyone is fuelled up. This season’s games are predicted to be as tight as ever, the only predictable thing. College basketball is at its finest and best, everything is unpredictable. Each school I am sure will be at its best, the Ateneo, the returning La Salle after that scandal which caused their 1-year suspension, last season’s surprising win by UST, UE thought to be one of the contenders for first place, NU, Adamson, and UP.

We have always cheered for the Ateneo, we will always cheer for Ateneo—WIN or LOSE, it’s the school we choose. We are Ateneans by heart. BA is now studying in UP but I know in his heart of hearts—he is an Atenean.

YES, for the first game, Ateneo won over Adamson, at 69-63. We are simply, amazingly happy. We will go to church with a big smile in our faces. This is a BIG win for the Ateneo, boosting their confidence—going for another sweep of the first round.

NOTES TO UAAP Inaugural: In Saturdays opening, Fr. Emilio de Sagon of UST encouraged the players, coaches, and all the UAAP fans to respect each other’s teams and the referees’ decisions regardless of the gmes’ results because the elague is after the rekindling of school spirit and clean fun…Working on the theme “Recreating the Value of Honesty Through Sports” (from The Phil Star, 9 July 2007).

My BIL and his son are from Ateneo. So my sis’ whole family is fiercely blue inside and out. They watch the games live.

I am BLUE too by affinity, with all 4 kids in Jesuit schools. I have not watched a game live but we don’t fail to catch it on TV and shout ourselves hoarse.

C1 watched in Araneta last year and painted half her face blue. When they lost, she cried. It’s C2’s turn to join her this year as she is in her 1st year there.

Yup…WIN or LOSE, it’s the school WE CHOOSE! ONE BIG FIGHT

SexyMom: Am sure C2 will be cheering with all her might on Thursday, her initiation to true blue basketball.

  2. mitchteryosa on July 8th, 2007 6:48 pm

    Adamsonian po ako hehe!

Sexy Mom: In game 3, Ateneo won 5 points over Adamson (he he he).

  3. chase on July 8th, 2007 7:24 pm

I never watch sports except for skiing or any winter sports and rooting for Norway. I usually prefer watching fashion shows, beauty pageants and such

Sexy Mom: I watched a fashion show a few days ago, Chase, my first, and I totally enjoyed it. Basketball, though, has its thrills!

  4. Tiffany on July 8th, 2007 7:59 pm

Who knew BA could be such a traitor! Haha! (Kidding, of course ;D) I myself was rooting for Ateneo :P

Sexy Mom: Ha ha ha! how can BA change color? do you think he will ever, Tiff?

  5. vince on July 8th, 2007 10:48 pm

i hope i don’t get any negative feedbacks AGAIN for what i’ve said. so, let me say now that i don’t have anything against AdU students or whatever university, i’m just a True Blue Atenean and proud of it.

Sexy Mom: no, Vince, it’s all in the spirit of sports, true!

  6. Alternati on July 9th, 2007 2:29 am

    Hey Dine,

I absolutely love how close knit your family is. A family that watches UAAP games together, stay together. ;)

Congratulations on the win. hehe… I believe fans are as match a part of the team as the actual players. :)

Sexy Mom: yes, Alternati, fans are part and parcel of the team.

  7. francesca on July 9th, 2007 3:56 am

what, no blogging bec of basketball games!

life would be a tragedy for super mom then, lol

Sexy Mom: If only i can do live blogging!

  8. Frances on July 9th, 2007 4:14 am

My gosh, that first game between Ateneo and Adamson was something. Adamson was a superstar-based team while Ateneo simply had more guys to rely on. Although I’m super glad that Ateneo won, I was impressed by Cabahug’s performance.

Anyway, UAAP season is back and it indeed a family affair. My dad’s from UST, my brother’s with La Salle while I’m studying in Ateneo. This was my favorite UAAP conversation today:

Dad: Iba pa rin talaga ang basketball ng UST at UE, sila talaga nagdodominate jan noh?
    Marlon: Uhh…
    Me: (no comment)

    happy viewing!

Sexy Mom: no comment? i am sure your heart’s rooting for BLUE!

  9. carlotta on July 9th, 2007 6:22 am

naku tita magkalaban pala tayo pagdating jan! taga UST bro ko so,,, i’m rooting for UST. =) pero hindi ko alam kung manonood ako ulet ng kahit anong game dahil tumitigil ang puso ko hehehe. =)

SexyMom: tigil puso talaga, it’s so exciting!

  10. Toni on July 9th, 2007 6:33 am

Hey! I’m Atenean too! One big fight :)

I share in the spirit you have! Win or lose, my loyalty is with the Blue Eagles. I’m not a hardcore UAAP fan nor am I an avid follower of basketball, but during the times I find myself seated in front of the TV or at the stadium watching the game live, the infectious spirit just gets me. I find myself screaming Get that Ball! and Halikinu with the rest of the crazed crowd.

How fun it must be to have your whole family cheering along with you! My Dad naman is from La Salle so we’d just make fun of each other. Haha! Good times still. :)

SexyMom: I’m glad we have no one from La Salle in the family (except that two of my girls have close friends from La Salle), otherwise, it would have been the same with you.

  11. Kongkong622 on July 9th, 2007 9:29 am

Yahoo!! A fellow Ateneo-basketball team loving mommy!! My weekends, and some weekdays, are now scheduled around the games (pag may game ang Ateneo). I also watch them live, if I can wring a couple out from the Alumni Director. Hehehe. Alam mo naman pag ganyan, palakasan na. Yehey!! ONE BIG FIGHT!! Would you know where I can get a small cheerleader’s uniform? Been dying to get some for the 2 asungots :)

SexyMom: I have asked my kids—no idea, why don’t we ask some of the kids on thursday?

  12. ba on July 9th, 2007 9:47 am

Eh Ma, sa UST ka nagcollege eh! :p

SexyMom: so? my MBA is from the ateneo.

  13. sasha on July 9th, 2007 10:49 am

Tita, sa UST ka raw nag-college sabi ni BA? :)

I am from UST kaya go Tigers! :)

SexyMom: hmmm, yes, ust in college, but didn’t watch basketball games then. anyway, i had my mba at ateneo (he he he), and my boys are from the ateneo (except one), even my eldest daughter—she is with the ateneo law school.

  14. acantos on July 9th, 2007 10:59 am

Nice report. You sure are better than those courtside reporters… Though, more in favor to Ateneo…

I was planning to blog about UAAP as well yesterday, but I am here in the office… w ti ef…?

SexyMom: Aldrin, i am not really blogging about uaap, i am blogging about Ateneo at the UAAP :)

  15. Kyels on July 9th, 2007 4:08 pm

Basketball is really big over there in Pinas but not in Malaysia though.

Anyway, my friend told me ‘bout UAAP earlier in the e-mail and she’s from UST … Hehe!

    (:

SexyMom: philippines is basketball country, but i do not watch PBA, i watch only uaap basketball, i mean ateneo in uaap (die hard fan, am i?)

  16. Luigi on July 9th, 2007 8:29 pm

When will UP ever learn to play good basketball? Grrr!!

Nah, don’t really care who wins. It’s the game and how it’s played that matters.

SexyMom: What a pity, UP has not won any game yet.

  17. Jon Limjap on July 10th, 2007 1:40 pm

    My mother’s situation is funny.

She finished her undergrad in UST, finished 2 masters in ADMU, and finished her PhD in DLSU. She teaches at DLSU, I graduated from there, and my sister’s from CSB, so it’s a pretty “green” family. My dad hailed from both UST and AdU (long story) but he never really rooted for either. But whether La Salle, Ateneo or UST wins, my mother wins. LOL

    Animo La Salle!

SexyMom: she wins 1/3, whichever way.

  18. ervin batacan on July 12th, 2007 1:33 pm

In fairness, UP plays good basketball.. though there’s just better teams who plays better basketball with us.. wahahahahaa

    Push on UP!

SexyMom: UP really needs a lot of pushing, at this stage.

  19. Kongkong622 on July 13th, 2007 9:59 am

I watched the Battle of Katipunan yesterday. Ateneo Rules ONE BIG FIGHT!!

    SexyMom: and on thursday?

  20. RedWarrior on July 13th, 2007 12:44 pm

Hey, dont count us of..UE will definitely be one of the final four again..and hopefully, claim our championship back again..its been 21 years since the last one..

And in case you didn’t know, only UE has the longest Basketball chapionship winning streak with 7 years straight from 1965-1972…

But hey, its just a game and we should all have a great time in watching the games and cheering for our schools..

SexyMom: i know, i know, but definitely, ADMU will put up ONE BIG FIGHT

  21. YBrek on July 15th, 2007 11:15 am

Over Confident ngaun ang Uste kaya ayun puro talo Wahahahaha

SexyMom: sometimes, anyone of the teams get overconfident.

  22. Jane on July 20th, 2007 1:00 pm

Naku, Dine. Daughter C2 came to me last night, making paalam to watch the ADMU-La Salle games with her blockmates. Then….C1 also comes to me later. She has a class at that time and is struggling whether to cut or go. But her prof, being the supportive fella he is, told the class “I would not blame you if you skip my class to go watch the games”. Hahahaha!

    ONE BIG FIGHT!

SexyMom: in high school, they are allowed to watch the games—with permission from parents. in law school, my daughter’s professor says if Ateneo wins, there will be no quizzes.

  23. Kyels on July 20th, 2007 4:33 pm

Is Tigers doing well in their games?!

    ;)

SexyMom: somehow…but it’s still elimination round.

  24. chikitsune on July 23rd, 2007 4:07 pm

“Family affair”—surely. My mother’s a DLSU alumni, my younger brother’s an LSGH graduate (currently in UP —but Lasallian through and through!), and I’m totally for the green side as well (currently in La Salle also).

My problem is, as it has been for the past 3 years, that all my past (and current) boyfriends are either from Ateneo, or are studying in Jesuit schools—and that they take great pride in brandishing their school pride in events like the UAAP. My loyalties, unfortunately, lie with the boyfriends when we attend the live games. But in family weekend-UAAP-TV-afternoon affairs, we’re just a big sea of green myself included. :)

SexyMom: hi, Chikit, maybe, just maybe, i have seen you in the games—there were times when i saw couples, one in green, one in blue, such that the one in green was the only one cheering if La Salle scored a point (LOL)! see you on thursday—ADMU side?

  25. Raphael on July 23rd, 2007 8:41 pm

    waaaa,,
guys! help me get 5 ticket for thursdays game,
PLEASE! can you help me??? SOLD OUT na kasi ticket sa DLSU e! PLEASE

Used to be so passionate about UAAP. Much later, I found out that the UAAP Champions are nothing compared to the NCAA winners.

    Que Barbaridad! :D

SexyMom: i haven’t watched NCAA, so i have no idea (he he he)

    Here’s a twist to Karla’s comment:

Ang sarap maging MOMMY ng mga atenista!

Tonight was my yoga night. But at the office (I now work!), I was reminded of the games because one DLSU guy there turned on the TV in the room where I was. So instead of yoga, I came home to watch the rest of the game. This is one time missing yoga was worth it!

  35. Kongkong622 on July 26th, 2007 11:48 pm

One big fight!! Fantastic game!! It was no TV for the kids as I had to catch the game. My sister called immediately after to tell me that she had contractions in overtime!! The best talaga!! Sarap maging Atenista

GO USTE!! let’s just say that my former classmate Jojo Duncil is out for the league for gud! the tigers and pido can still play and win. wala nman na tlaga key player sa UST dahil gmagamit si Pido Jarencio ng 10 to 12 players a game. up to now ngbblend pa rin si Pido kung cno tlaga ang ilalagay nia.. big factor si Jervy Cruz kso ndi katulad last season that he dominates the whole season especially sa boards.. I think that the Heart and Soul of the UST Growling Tigers is Pido Jarencio, larong KANTO ang playing style nia… isang example nyan ung UAAP Finals last season when the Tigers beat the Eagles in Game 3. Norman Black plays with the Book of Basketball pero si Pido Jarencio plays with knowledge of Kanto Basketball style…

Also, 2 of my fave teams in UAAP are UP and Ateneo dahil wala rin sila go to guy! sa Ateneo puro sila bata si Chris Tiu lang tlaga ang nagdadala sa kanila ng spirit. last season the Blue Eagles head to the Finals with JC Intal, Doug Kramer and their Point Guard Macky Escalona.. Big Three tlaga sila nung Season 69 pero ngaun si Chris Tiu and Reyes lang ang may confidence level para sa Ateneo.. You can also give credit to their Center/Forward Ford Arao dhil nag-mature ung laro nya after 2 or 3 Seasons! pag dating nman sa UP Fighting Maroons, wala akong masabi dahil lahat sila mga bata! i think their only main player are the sophomores and the rest are Rookies. Kulang pa tlaga sila sa Experience but the way they are playing in Season 70 ndi tlaga sila nagbibigay sa mga Opponents nila! sa tingin ko wlang pressure pare kay Coach Joe Lipa and his crew dahil back to start sila, maybe after next year or on season 72 mas mag-improve na ang laro ng UP Fighting Maroons…

  40. jen on July 27th, 2007 7:50 am

that was such an exciting game! i enjoyed it a whole lot even if i was just watching it on tv. i could just imagine the atmosphere at araneta! sobrang adrenaline rush watching the last few seconds of the last quarter as well as the OT…it could’ve been anybody’s game. congratulations to ADMU for soaring high!

too bad UP sucks at this game…oh well, cheering competition na lang inaabangan ko…hehe!

La Salle has until 7 p.m. today to file game protest
    By Jasmine W. Payo
    Inquirer
Last updated 02:23am (Mla time) 07/28/2007

MANILA, Philippines—The country’s fiercest basketball rivalry could turn more vicious following reports that La Salle was planning to place under protest its loss last Thursday to Ateneo in the UAAP men’s basketball competition.

La Salle said that Ateneo fielded foreign players Kirk Long and Zion Laterre at the same time in the second quarter of the blockbuster showdown where the Eagles edged the Archers, 80-77, in overtime.

Teams may field a maximum of two foreigners in its lineup, but a league rule decrees that only one foreign player can play on court at any given time.

Laterre is a 6-foot-3 Australian forward, while the 6-foot-1 Long is an American rookie guard.

UAAP commissioner Ed Cordero said La Salle has until 7 p.m. today to file a protest.

The game sequence in contention occurred with 4:49 minutes left in the first half.

Upon review, Laterre was inside the court when the game barker announced that Long would come in as a substitute for Jai Reyes during a dead-ball situation.

As play resumed with La Salle bringing the ball down, Long went back to the bench and Reyes rushed inside the court.

The referees called a technical foul at 4:33 as Reyes entered the court without permission from the officials’ table. La Salle nailed its two technical free throws.

In a meeting last night, La Salle officials said that “even if Reyes rushed back on the court several seconds later, the violation [has been committed].”

But while the Archers weigh their options, La Salle coach Franz Pumaren said that the Archers will just keep their focus.

The Archers have shaved their heads after absorbing two straight losses against the University of the East and Ateneo.

“It’s a show of solidarity,” said Pumaren. “We want to show that we’re one even when we’re losing. [Our problem against Ateneo was] we shot poorly at the free throw line. We were playing in spurts and our bench was not really contributing.”
    La Salle officially files protest

MANILA, Philippines—La Salle had officially placed under protest the Archers’ recent loss to fierce rival Ateneo Blue Eagles in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball competition.

League officials vowed on Saturday to issue a “quick decision” over La Salle’s contention that Ateneo fielded foreign players Kirk Long and Zion Laterre at the same time in the Thursday showdown where the Eagles outlasted the Archers, 80-77, in overtime.

“Ateneo committed a violation of Rule # IX, the rule on no two foreigners playing at the same time,” La Salle noted in an official letter signed by Archers coach Franz Pumaren and endorsed by La Salle board representative Brother Bernard S. Oca, FSC.

Teams may line up a maximum of two foreigners, but league rule states that only one foreign player is allowed to play on court at any given time.

The 6-foot-3 Laterre is a veteran Australian forward, while the 6-foot-1 Long is an American rookie guard.

    our defense:

Here’s a little-known fact on the Lago rule. During an ADMU-DLSU game (I think it was in the first round of 1991), the Lago brothers inadvertently spent around 10 secounds on the court together because of some confusion during a substitution. Elmer Lago eventually left the curt, LA Salle went on to win, and Ateneo placed the game under protest.

La Salle argued that it was an honest mistake and that those 10 seconds did not affect the outcome of the game since it happened in the second (or was it third?) quarter. The Board sided with La Salle, voting 6-0.

quote from franz pumaren on a game protested by UE against dlsu….. “...games should be decided on the basketball court and not in board rooms…”
