To My Husband, All My Love on Valentine’s Day

I am sure you do not want flowers on Valentine’s Day (they’re too girlie), nor plants, nor a new shirt, nor a pair of pants (though you should have new ones, having lost a lot of weight lately), nor a pair of expensive shoes (you already had them on our anniversary in January). I can not even invite you to tonight’s Paul Williams concert, you said you would rather that we stayed home and treated the children to a special dinner. No fancy restaurants this time, as traffic would be bad in the evening, the reason for our having gone on a date before V day. You have gone past the stage of wanting for material pleasures. As against I who enjoy the finer and funner things in life. We are extremes in many ways, and that makes it all the more difficult for me to think of a Valentine’s gift that you will appreciate.

That is why, today, our 27th Valentine’s Day as husband and wife, I buy you no gift, but present to you my thoughts, my thanks and my love.

Thank you for having been there with me through all my ups and downs. For having stood by me through the real UPs and DOWNs. For sharing with me the joy of raising 7 wonderful blessings of 4 sons and 3 daughters, plus a daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren, and my mother who lives with us. For being faithful. For remaining quiet, not even raising your voice when kids misbehave, do not listen, or when I am stubborn. For not minding it at all when the house is not in order or when I and the kids play badminton in the living room. For waking up in the middle of the night or early morning to pick sons or daughters from gimmicks, concerts, parties, and even bringing home their friends. For so many many more.

And most of all for bringing family closer to God, for patiently being the spiritual pillar in the home, for being the family’s spiritual warrior.

For you and all the world to read, I love you with all my heart. Our kids love you with all their hearts.

PS: And thank you for the bouquet of flowers delivered by Angelo and Baby Cate this morning. Hope you have a safe flight back home this afternoon. We’ll have a nice dinner tonight, special because we will all be together. Even if it you were away for only 3 days, we missed you. Happy Valentine’s Day!
