Starbucks Diary–A confusion of sorts on “Father’s Day”

Three of my seven children (Vince, BA and Pauline) are active users of the Starbucks Diary. No, they didn’t buy them—they kept their Starbucks receipts (including those of their friends’), exchanged them for stickers that were stamped in a coupon. For 21 stickers (meaning 21 cups of coffee, or P2,000+) one got a free Starbucks Diary. No matter how thick or heavy the diary is, they carry the diary with them. The diary keeps a personal account of their activities. See how serious they are about their diary (left picture).

Last Sunday, there was a confusion or sorts. Starbucks Diary earmarked 10 June 2007 as Father’s Day, with a matching Starbucks Father’s Day card. Eldest daughter Monica and I were up till 4 am, putting together a Father’s Day post. Monica greeted her dad, who in jest said, “Today is not Father’s Day. It will be next Sunday, 3rd Sunday of June”. Monica insisted it was indeed Father’s Day, and even greeted eldest brother Angelo at 3 am. I even sent out some text messages greeting fathers I know (ouch! kinda embarassing!).

And I had to pull out that post, after having consulted Wikipedia, and despite having received 2 comments already. One even said, “I’m sad. No Father’s Day greetings for me. :(” An explanation: It was not Father’s Day yet, though earlier, I had the hunch that it was not.

Still, after our 4 pm Sunday Mass, the kids were confused: were we celebrating Father’s Day or not? We ended up celebrating Angelo’s birthday, instead. We had dinner at Conti’s in Serendra. Food was great, ambience was good.

For the benefit of everyone, here is what Wikipedia says:

“Father’s Day is a primarily secular holiday 20th century to complement Mother’s Day in celebrating fatherhood and parenting by males, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father’s Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, and typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities. The officially recognized date of Father’s Day varies from country to country.”

3rd Sunday of June (that is, for 2007 on 17 June): Argentina, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela, Zimbabwe.

23 Feb: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus; 19 March: Bolivia, Honduras, Italy, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland; 5 May: Romania; 8 May: South Korea (Parents’ Day); 1st Sunday of June: Lithuania; 5 June: Denmark (Constitution Day); 2nd Sunday of June: Austria, Belgium, Ecuador; 17 June: Salvador, Guatemala; 23 June: Nicaragua, Poland, Uganda; 30 July: Vietnam; 3rd Sunday of July: Uruguay; Last Sunday of July: Dominican Republic; 2nd Sunday of Aug: Brazil; 8 August: Taiwan; 1st Sunday of Sept: New Zealand, Australia;2nd Sunday of Nov: Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden; 5 Dec: Thailand; Ascension Day: Germany; 23 Mordad: Iran.

So, don’t forget, Father’s Day in the Philippines is officially on 17 June 2007. :)

And hey, Starbucks, you might care to explain.

Wait. I don’t religiously update my planner. All that’s written on it are exams and stuff

SexyMom: BA, your siblings are better off putting to use their diary/planner. but that’s ok, you have so much to do, now that you have officially shifted to Applied Physics. I saw those thick books you bought.

  2. Em Dy on June 13th, 2007 7:10 pm

Hi Sexy Mom. You were not the only ones confused. A number of other people were too. I was having my lunch at Sumo Sam when I heard a mom telling her kid that lunch was to celebrate his doing well in school and next day would be another celebration for that. How I wanted to butt in and correct them but decided not to. The same was true last Mother’s Day. I think advertising/marketing is partly to blame. Malls, for example, earmark the week before the actual date for the celebration. Motivation? Revenue, perhaps. Wikipedia is right. Mother’s day – 2nd Sunday of May. Father’s day – 3rd Sunday of June.

SexyMom: you are right—double spending, double father’s day celebrations.

    hi tita!

thanks for sharing the info from Wikipedia. yay, the starbucks should indeed check its calendar.

    happy bday to Angelo. :)

SexyMom: i am sure starbucks is now swamped with complaints!

  4. des on June 13th, 2007 11:05 pm

tita, i hope this might help. i got this notice when I posted my comment:

Warning: in_array(): Wrong datatype for second argument in /home/racoma/public_html/dine/wp-content/plugins/subscribe-to-comments.php on line 433

    etc…

SexyMom: thanks, Des. ANGELO - help

  5. Girlie on June 13th, 2007 11:40 pm

There’s a big streamer at MegaMall, kaya alam ko na sa Sunday Pa, 17th of June ang Father’s day

SexyMom: thanks, Girlie, i was in megamall a few days ago, i didn’t notice, i must have been preoccupied with all the expenses and all; i have lost track of the expenses now, and there’s more—last minute school needs!

  6. dimaks on June 14th, 2007 1:12 am

same error comment i always get.. anyway, that list above there is surely a LIST :) so don’t forget where your fathers friends reside :)

SexyMom: good point, dimaks—Filipinos are in almost every part of the world. OFW fathers deserve their 2 special days, Father’s Day in the Philippines, and Father’s Day in the country where they are stationed.

I had to do a double take and look at the calendar beside the computer when I read your entry =) last Sunday (?).That was a lovely looking card that your children made with a poem! Interesting to know though that Fathers’ Day is being celebrated on different dates in different countries. All I knew was it’s always on the 3rd Sunday of June!
Happy Fathers’ Day to all fathers & future fathers =)

Sexy Mom: oh Gina, you were one of those who saw that post last Sunday morning. yes, it was a nice card and a cute poem. will post it again sunday morning.

  8. MrsPartyGirl on June 14th, 2007 4:58 am

a friend of mine texted all of the fathers he knew (including his bosses!) last sunday because his starbucks planner said it was father’s day. he was really embarassed by it! he’s boycotting starbucks now… just until after the real father’s day comes along hehe. dapat starbucks should give free drinks to everyone duped by their planner, no? :)

Sexy Mom: that’s very embarrassing! though it’s a double treat for the fathers.

  9. carlotta on June 14th, 2007 5:32 am

my older brother religiously bought coffee at starbucks to get the planner and when he did, it sat in his room gathering dust until march when he decided to give it to me. =) good thing coz i never had the patience to collect the stickers or the stomach to overdose on coffee.ü i used that to write all i have done during my trip. i also noticed before that father’s day is on june 10 in the planner but didn’t remember it until i updated it a couple of days ago. =)

Sexy Mom: starbucks owe us cups and cups of coffee for the confusion (i don’t take coffee, so i would welcome the cakes).

  10. pinayhekmi on June 14th, 2007 5:57 am

I’ve only recently started keeping track of things by writing them down. I think I have this, “my brain can hold it all” label I’ve put on myself that I just can’t shed! But should! :)

Sexy Mom: same here, Tintin, i also have this “my brain can hold it all” concept, except for deadlines, of course.

  11. julie on June 14th, 2007 7:26 am

Starbucks should apologize to its clients. It is embarrassing to those who sent their greetings one week earlier. But still, they (Fathers) did get their greetings in advanced. Kesa naman wala, :)

SexyMom: yes, Julie, an apology, plus cups and cups of coffee, in my case, pieces of those sinfully delicious cakes and pastries.

  12. Belle on June 14th, 2007 9:16 am

hi Dine, you were just a week early with your greetings, what is wrong with that? hehehe.

i have to write almost everything down so I will not forget it. aahhhh, the pains of getting old.

  13. jun on June 14th, 2007 10:14 am

My wife thought it was on the 2nd week and treated me out.. And did so again last Monday, just for kicks… Maybe we’ll celebrate again this Sunday if the budget still fits =). At least something good happened to me thanks to the confusion. So should I thank Starbucks now?

  14. bw on June 14th, 2007 10:40 am

21 cups of coffee for P2,000 – man, Starbucks is pricey indeed and it matters not what part of the world you buy them ! Sure enough Starbucks has some explaining to do with the botched Father’s Day date :) BTW, pls extend my Bday greetings to Angelo :)

  15. Kongkong622 on June 14th, 2007 10:46 am

Hi SexyMom..my friends are also fans of that diary. They practically drown themselves in coffee just to get that.

In any case, advanced Happy Father’s Day to the H and to Angelo too :)

  16. Mr Ala Eh on June 14th, 2007 12:34 pm

with planner or without, I am confused about dates. I even forgot mother’s day. I always miswritten dates when I sign on papers.

  17. lady cess on June 14th, 2007 12:44 pm

uhh… the diary was made in austria, belgium or ecuador? :D

  18. Ade on June 14th, 2007 2:03 pm

Yeah, everyone in the office was kinda frantic about it also. To think their planners were hella expensive. :P

  19. Angel on June 14th, 2007 3:04 pm

Better early than late or never. Anyway, using a planner is quite like parenting. You think you have things down pat but sometimes, things just take a different turn. Nothing that a cup of Starbucks coffee can’t solve. =)Advanced Happy Father’s Day everybody.

  20. angel on June 14th, 2007 3:11 pm

I was confused too. But what made me conclude that it wasn’t Father’s Day yet was the lack of ads and promo associated with he occasion. but, really, it was confusing.

  21. Kyels on June 14th, 2007 4:33 pm

I’m still keeping my Starbucks diary and I did not touch it at all because I don’t wanna write anything on it.

Though I do keep a different diary though.

  24. pauline on June 15th, 2007 12:23 am

i was also a victim of that one! i thought father’s day was last sunday, i woke up my brother on monday morning telling him that we missed father’s day! apparently we didn’t! :))

  25. KK on June 15th, 2007 2:27 am

That’s why it’s always good to check on the Internet when it doubt ;) . My sister from the Phils also sent Father’s Day greetings to my hubby and that got me confused, so I had to check online.

  26. Angel on June 15th, 2007 2:54 am

    Yikes. What a typo :O

  27. aMgiNe on June 15th, 2007 10:42 am

i myself became a victim of that booboo of the starbucks planner. =(

  28. Rach on June 15th, 2007 4:57 pm

Hi Dine. I had a similar experience. My husband was on a quiet mood that night. I knew something was wrong so I asked him before going to sleep. He said that he was disappointed that I didn’t even remember to greet him. I was dumbfounded and had to ask what day it was. Apparently, many of his friends and even some relatives texted him Happy Father’s Day. I guess he was hurt thinking I forgot. I told him that Father’s Day is still on June 17. When he was already asleep, I sneaked to turn on my computer to google the date of Father’s Day in the Philippines this year. I was so relieved when I found out I was right after all. I don’t think I can forgive myself if I actually forgot to greet my husband on that special day.

  29. jireh on June 15th, 2007 7:05 pm

hi tita Dine! :) my churchmates and I were also busy preparing for the said event last week… funny because we still have a week to go pa pala.. hehehe :) Since I’m far away from Bacolod, I was the one who made the lay-out na lang for the surprise for our parish priest :) we really consider him as our second father :)

  30. Joel on June 16th, 2007 4:25 pm

Whew! There’s still a chance to get greetings. Hehe. It will be a sad day for me, though, as Joyce and Cesky are still in Leyte. :(

  31. sassy mom on June 16th, 2007 10:32 pm

Yup! My mom got victimized too… greeted my hubby!
and a lot of my friends.

I think Starbucks have a lot of explaining to do.

  32. Toni on June 18th, 2007 8:47 am

  33. feng on June 19th, 2007 12:11 pm

    LOL with the starbucks planner.

anyway, happy happy father’s day to the most important men in your life. :)

SexyMom: thanks, Feng, blog hiatus, but still you take time out for your blog friends!
God bless and good luck with whatever decisions you make!
