It was inevitable—it was coming, the only thing that is certain in life—death.

Tita Cory has has passed away on a Saturday morning, 1 August 2009. She was 76 years old. When she died, and days before that, millions of Filipinos, even non-Filipinos, have joined each other, lifting her up in prayer, 24/7. What greater gift is there than to know that everyone, not only her family and close friends, were with her in prayer. And she died on a first Saturday, slightly past 3 am. What a wonderful day to die (Saturday—a very meaningful day for the devotees of Our Lady of Fatima, 3 o’clock—the time for Divine Mercy devotees).

God must not have wanted her to suffer physical pain any longer. God must have wanted her to join Him with his multitude of angels and saints in Heaven, and Mama Mary, too, to whom Tita Cory was a devotee. Heaven must be festooned with hues of yellows (her color), whites and blues (Mama Mary’s colors). Now she is at peace—this wonderful woman, who is not only “Tita” to all, but could be considered “mother of the nation” and “Mother of Philippine Democracy”. She, who led the country out of the dark after her husband’s (another equally patriotic man—the hero who died for the nation) death leading to the EDSA Revolution. It could have been the emancipation of our country from the deep pit we all Filipinos in are right now, but that’s all history now. Her memories will remain in our hearts forever.

With the death of our beloved President Corazon Aquino, let us not feel as though we were orphaned, “hindi tayo nag-iisa”. We just have to rise—we must, and pick up the pieces. Let Ninoy’s and Tita Cory’s deaths not be in vain. She must be in Heaven now, continuously interceding for us, her crusade for a free Filipino, emancipated from the evils of corruption. Let us continue the crusade—the yellow ribbons must not only be physical. Let them be a reminder to all of us, to do our share, no matter how small, in helping create a better Philippines, even if we are to start in our own homes, the basic unit of society.

With this, my family and I join the Aquino family and the whole nation in mourning for her death. And at the same time, I say,

Thank you, Tita Cory for touching our lives and more.

Thank you, dear Lord, for the gift of a Tita Cory, an icon, an inspiration, one to emulate. Thank you!
