My Havaianas - A Tale of a Thousand Wonderful Steps

I have a vivid recollection of how I would berate one of the kids for spending a big amount of money on what I called “rubber slippers”, and how I have eaten my very own words two years after that.

P800+ (or about $16) on the average for a pair of rubber slippers? There must be a mistake! Those should sell only for P50 (about a dollar) a pair. Who would in his/her right mind pay a huge amount (more than 10x) for slippers, worn most of the time in the bathroom, at most inside the house? No explanation would convince me, it took a while before I finally allowed one of the kids to buy his first pair of havaianas (rubber flip-flops designed, manufactured and marketed from Brazil). And it even had a different name, I wondered. All the time, I called them “tsinelas” or “spartan”.

one of then is not a havaianas—can you guess which is it?

Another kid followed suit, and another, and another, until a dozen, nay two dozens, of these colored species was evident in almost all corners of the house. They came in different colors (sometimes neon, sometimes metallic), patterns , themes, prints, etc. The kids wear them not only in the house, but outside the house as well, going to the malls, for gimmicks, bringing them to school, to parties, even to church (until my husband declared a NO NO—he said church should be formal). And not only one pair for each kid, one even has 5 (bought out of his allowance, or from sweet talking me). Silently, I would rebel inside—why spend a fortune for this lowly “tsinelas”?

a small part of the collection, for 7 pairs of happy feet

Until I got a pair from daughter Monica on Christmas day. What caught my fancy was that it came in one of my favorite colors—lavender, with a flowery appeal. But because of a certain amount of mommy pride (I always complained when I saw a new one in the house, didn’t I?), I did not wear them immediately.A few days later, I put them on, and Wow! It felt different. Must be because they were expensive, I asked? Or the flowery appeal? No—it was the comfort, the thick rubber concoction perfectly fit the curves of my feet. And the style—havaianas has class.

And that started for me, the tale of a thousand wonderful steps. My havaianas represented my freedom—I am now liberated from my fancy heels, from my stilletos. Now I roam around, even outside the house in my havaianas, in the mall, supermarket, park, everywhere, in comfort and in style. There is always a pair in the car for a change in footwear, in case I need to enter a building or an office in formal or semi-formal wear.

And NO, dear readers, this is not a paid advertisement. It is just a sharing of a mom, who once complained of their existence in the house, but has eventually accepted them, even liked them very much. One of these days, I am going with the kids to get a personalized pair, with swarovski crystals and all—in a store in Rockwell Power Plant.

welcome to the club! i know, i had big qualms about paying $23.40 (here in the US) for a pair of Spartan-like chinelas until i slipped my feet into them and i’m like, wow, it’s like walking on clouds. i bought 4 pairs in Manila last time i was there because they were $6 cheaper each.

sexy mom: wow, $6 more expensive in the US! i’m not surprised why you bought 4 more here.

  2. Modern Mami on March 28th, 2007 4:59 am

Thanks for visiting my blog! I agree, slippers are way too expensive!

sexy mom: yes, kinda expensive. thanks, too, will be visiting more often.

  3. The New Parent on March 28th, 2007 5:26 am

Hi—as a blogging Dad I love to visit other blogs and happened upon yours. Interesting blog.
It is amazing that flip-flops have become expensive. Though, you can still go to some places and get them for $5 for two pair.
Thanks for sharing and if you have a mind to, stop on over.

sexy mom: i did stop over—interesting. will stop over more often.

  4. noemi on March 28th, 2007 7:13 am

if you eat at the Baguio Country Club restaurant , they won’t let you in if you wear rubber slippers. Even though none of us in the family wear havaiianas, one of my daughters wore cheaper brazilian slippers. unfortunately, she had no alternative footwear. She ended up eating in her room by herself.

sexy mom: yes, but there are more establishments now which have softened their rules. that is why also, i see to it that i have other shoes in the car whenever i go out in my havaianas. just to be sure.

  5. Kyels on March 28th, 2007 7:17 am

I love, love, love, Havaianas. I could not get any here in Malaysia and when I was in Pinas last year, I found the shop in Glorietta that is dedicated to selling Havaianas only … Gawd, I was happy! Hahaha!

Bought a few pairs back. Wheee!

    (:

They are comfy, I have to admit that though.

sexy mom: me, too, it’s an endless love affair with my havaianas(es)!

  6. toni on March 28th, 2007 8:43 am

I still don’t get Havaianas. Maybe because I haven’t owned a pair, haha! Perhaps if I try a pair I’d get hooked too. I think I’ll save my P800 first; when I do get some extra cash to indulge, I’ll think about getting those much-coveted Brazilian tsinelas!

sexy mom: then, you’ll see for yourself why.

  7. tofubaby on March 28th, 2007 8:47 am

So that’s what Havianna’s are. I usually pass through the store and thought there goes another of that thing. However, I am a fan of comfort and would gladly walk barefoot or with flip-flops anytime. I guess I have to try them for myself. :-)

sexy mom: yes, these flip-flops are A-1 in comfort!

  8. Alex on March 28th, 2007 9:01 am

Same with me, I’d rather add a few hundred and buy me some Fila sneakers (which are always on sale).

I have crummy feet anyway to expose by wear flip-flops (a couple of football injuries sort of distorted them a bit, haha).

I wonder if Spartan sandals are still around.

sexy mom: yo, Alex! had your feet been sexy, would you have sported a havaianas? i heard spartan sandals are still around.

  9. Gina on March 28th, 2007 9:22 am

Lovely colors they got! I should check them out when I go to shoe stores here, maybe they will be ‘sikat’ here this spring when we can finally wear open toes/sandals!

sexy mom: lovely colors, indeed! who knows they will be “sikat” in Canada. in singapore, i found more “ipanemas” than havaianas.

  10. feng on March 28th, 2007 10:05 am

on “one of them is not a havaianas—can you guess which is it?”

ummm, the dark brown slipper with the blue strips?

sexy mom: oh no, Feng! those are vince’s favorites—they’re custom made. the one in the center is a P50 “havanas”

  11. Zherwin on March 28th, 2007 10:35 am

my gf is a shoe girl (and i think every girl is) and not really a tsinelas girl until she got an ipanema last year. she’s yet to be bitten by the havaianas bug as she thought it’s so expensive (hah, ipanema’s about the same price)! maybe she does not like the idea of buying a tsinelas every now and then or when the latest style comes to town.

as for me, i also go for comfort but havaianas the comfort i wouldn’t dare to buy, maybe it’s the conservative side of me telling me that slippers, no matter how trendy and expensive it maybe, should still be worn inside the house or in the car and not in the church or in a restaurant.

sexy mom: i, too, was conservative before—could not go out without my sexy step-ins, but there’s a change now! NO, i don’t wear them in church, but in restaurants, it’s fine.

  12. Raquel on March 28th, 2007 10:35 am

WOWOW! What a great collections! Yet simple but very expensive.

I guess most people you like to wear “tsinelas”, are those you have an attractive feet.

sexy mom: it’s the comfort, yes. but also, sexy mom has sexy attractive feet (LOL)

  13. KK on March 28th, 2007 10:45 am

I should check these flip-flops out. I love flip-flops! I still have 3 pairs of my Islanders from the Philippines, which I wear during summer. :)

sexy mom: i have not tried islanders, but my first impression is that they are plain. but let me check if they are comfortable to wear.

  14. carlotta on March 28th, 2007 11:03 am

i’d love to have a pair but whenever i have the means, i balk and make a 180-degree turn. maybe i should just close my eyes when i pay hehe.

    sexy mom: try them!

  15. Raquel on March 28th, 2007 11:05 am

WOWOW! What a great collections! Yet simple but very expensive.

I guess most people who like to wear “tsinelas”, are those you have an attractive feet.

sexy mom: they’re comfortable! and sexy mom’s feet are sexy (LOL)!

  16. Flor P. Velasco on March 28th, 2007 11:43 am

my daughter is using it and she is telling me to get another color…i thought the price is only 75 pesos!! she was very silent about it….wow….i have to find it out and feel it…..will come back…...

sexy mom: i guess you don’t feel deceived at all, now that you have read about them trendy comfortable havaianas! so, you’ll buy her another pair? she gotta try the floral slim havaianas with metallic straps.

  17. mr nice ash on March 28th, 2007 1:51 pm

    that’s how much?

I have worn a real havaianas tsinelas and a fake “HAVANNAS”. I didn’t notice any difference, I swear…

sexy mom: c’mon mr nice ash, give it a fair try!

  18. myepinoy on March 28th, 2007 3:46 pm

Welcome to my children’s slipper club.

Did you know that one campus in katipunan where my kid study was invaded by this brand of slipper? As a result, the school admin was forced to implement the no slipper policy during school days kasi halos lahat naka-tsinelas na (parang nasa beach) at kokonti na ang nakasapatos.

Is it really the comfort or the status attached to it? This is the question I always asks my kids.

sexy mom: so, our kids go to the same school—in ateneo. after classes, kids would immediately change their footwear from school shoes to havaianas. ateneo banned the practice, although they allow the boys to wear havaianas after intrams and on weekends.

  19. Rach on March 28th, 2007 3:53 pm

Wow, look at all those Havaianas. They should give you a big discount after buying so many pairs.

I love my Havaianas too. I have two pairs and wear them everywhere. Oh, your husband sounds just like mine. I wanted to wear my Havs (a short cut name I fondly use for it) in church when he told me that it was not proper because we were going to mass. I see many people at church wearing them but I respect my husband’s wishes. My little boy has one too. :)

I like the idea of personalizing your Havs but haven’t done it yet. Let me know when you do. :)

sexy mom: i guess our hubbies are right—havaianas should never be worn in church. must have been my kids’ excitement the first time they owned a pair, they wanted to wear them everywhere. we’re about to buy havaianas for our little uns (2 and 4 yo). as to personalizing them, see Cai’s comments#32. also, the kids have discovered a shop at the powerplant mall.

  20. vince on March 28th, 2007 9:36 pm

sino yung may 5 pairs?? di ako yun! i’m not that much of an addict! i only have 4!! hahaha! :P okay, not much difference :P

i loooove my havaianas! especially the last pair i bought which i had made for my taste ;) (see the brown with cyan strap) and the one i had made for Steph looks good with mine :D (white with pink)

sexy mom: you, vince! i thought your new one is H#5. oh, well, havaianas are far cheaper than a pair of Nikes!

  21. melai on March 28th, 2007 10:00 pm

hay naku tita, ako sabi ko di ako bibili nyan..kamahal e. pero nung bumili yung sis ko dito ng dalawa ayun ako taga gamit ng isa..kahit saan kasi nga sarap sa paa.

sexy mom: kinda expensive, yes, but worth it, in terms of comfort and style.

  22. pauline on March 28th, 2007 10:34 pm

hi tita!! i know you told me before to comment but i was shy. then i saw the slippers and got excited haha! i also have the lavender pair with flowers, and there are times when chato and i would wear that pair at the same time during banaag rehearsals :) before, i also swore to never buy a pair of havaianas because of the price, but things changed and now, when my mom’s, my sister’s and my pairs are put together, we have around 47 already. good thing our feet are all of the same size so we could share :)

sexy mom: oh pauline! your family must have spent a lot for them “47”! the lavender pair with flowers are mine. chato just bought a new pair—floral slim, with metallic gold straps, and i plan to borrow hem one of these days. good we 4 girls (plus our 10 yo boy) have the same size, too.

  23. ba on March 29th, 2007 1:29 am

Bibili pa ba ako niyan? Nadudumihan lang yun akin. :p Nakiita niyo yung dilaw na medyo may green (inaamag na ata)? hahahahahaha

sexy mom: BA, let’s seriously have your hyperhydrosis treated, so that your havaianas would look squeaky clean all the time.

  24. Mr Saint on March 29th, 2007 4:21 am

I don’t see the difference with the ordinary pairs. I might know when I get to wear one.

sexy mom: i bet you will see the difference, when you get to wear one!

  25. Girlie on March 29th, 2007 9:40 am

welcome to the club! hirap na nga ako mag stilletos because of havaianas…i have a lot of pairs in different colors too =)

sexy mom: true! true! my havaianas have liberated me! and i can always borrow from my kids (whether boy or girl), except from my big boys.

  26. dimaks on March 29th, 2007 10:21 am

Can I barrow a pair just to get the feeling and then buy myself one later? hehe..

Very nice collection, who knows in the later times they will be in the vintage realm and sell high :D But well, they are your collections after all, so I think they will stay home.

sexy mom: you’re always welcome—but you are in japan!

  27. Sidney on March 29th, 2007 12:07 pm

I didn’t know about the existence of branded “tsinelas”. Maybe this is a new market for Louis Vuitton! ;-)

sexy mom: well, who knows, LV might be interested?

  28. Ang-ang on March 29th, 2007 12:30 pm

Slippers were really invading the whole nation.

sexy mom: indeed! whether havaianas or havanas or ipanemas, or islanders…because of comfort perhaps? and style?

  29. Gypsy on March 29th, 2007 1:07 pm

I love the fact that flip flops are so in! Like you, felt so liberated—now I dont have to wear closed shoes anymore!! I have at least 6 pairs of flip flops, formal, and casual ones. But no Havainas, though. :)

sexy mom: who knows, one of these days the trendy havaianas would be part of your flip flop collection.

  30. chase on March 29th, 2007 1:47 pm

Well we dont have Havainas here. But I would love to get one.

It is so funny when trend takes over since it turns something lower or actually things that are taken for granted into gold

sexy mom: who knows, one of these days havaianas would take norway by storm!

  31. verns on March 29th, 2007 1:59 pm

i wonder when i will have the time (read: money) to buy those slippers hehehe

nahhhhh I got ugly toes so I try to avoid wearing flipflops….

sexy mom: oh, well, verns, what can i say, except that “ugly” is relative.

  32. Cai on March 29th, 2007 2:14 pm

    Hi sexymom!
Wow! what a collection of flip flops!! Weeeeeee…
I do love flip flops too.. and just like you, i am happily liberated from my converse and rubber shoes! Flip flops are cute and comfy I wear them in school!! Anyway, you can always wear anything in UP.
You can order personalized slippers from me.. Hehe.. I love personalizing my flip flops, putting beads and shells and crystal and even grains! Haha.. So fun..

sexy mom: wow, cai! you are so artistic…wish i were artistic, too. will tell my kids about you.

  33. arnold on March 29th, 2007 3:57 pm

the price may be worth it after all. very comfy on my feet.

i’m getting my second pair soon! new stocks should have arrived by now at the FlipFlops shop in Serendra.

ey, even my 1 year old loves her 1st pair of Havainas

sexy mom: nice to learn that your 1 yo boy loves his havaianas. my kids have been asking me to buy for their 2yo and 4yo nieces, but i thought they were still too young to wear flip flops. let me see now.

  34. annamanila on March 29th, 2007 11:40 pm

Aaah no way. (I think) But as they say never say never. Pag may magreregalo. haha.

sexy mom: who knows? baka may manregalo nga!

  35. auee on March 30th, 2007 12:08 am

You remind me of another blogger who is addicted to havianas:

    http://nocturnalangel2.blogspot.com/

Grabe ang collection nyan & since she’s a journo, may natatanggap pang freebies… To follow suit ka kaya in the number of slippers?
    :-)

    sexy mom: freebies? wow!

  36. jesse ramon on March 30th, 2007 6:10 pm

sexy mom: cool word “havaianatic”. thanks!

  37. benj on March 31st, 2007 2:48 am

my mom loves ‘em too. I tried to swing her to the Crocs side of things but she totally hated them. haha.

sexy mom: yo, benj! sexy mom’s got something in common with benj’s mom!

  38. lady cess on March 31st, 2007 9:08 am

hehehe, i understand that. dati, hindi ko rin gusto ang mga naka-tsinelas, pero when i stepped into a pair, hala, i wear it almost everywhere i go. convert na rin ako :)

sexy mom: converts! havaianas converts—nice name!

  39. micamyx on March 31st, 2007 10:09 am

I want to own a havaiana but its too expensive :) I’ll wait for my mom to come back here in the country so i can purchase my own lol :p

sexy mom: hope your mom comes home soon…i’m sure you and your brother miss her so much!

  40. haze on April 1st, 2007 3:50 am

That would cost 50 euro (the simplest one) in France and yes those are expensive but quality slippers ! Huhhh I don’t even have one, hehehe mahal po kasi dito :) ! And I am not after the brand !

sexy mom: 50 euros is a fortune say hello to Basti from me.

  41. kimmy on April 1st, 2007 7:28 am

i’ve been intrigued by these insanely expensive rubber slippers for the longest time. i don’t have a pair because i really think they’re ridiculously expensive.

but then again, curiousity eats me so maybe i’ll buy myself a pair sooner or later. :-)

sexy mom: It took me 2 years before I was able to appreciate them, you know! miss you, kimmy!

  42. reisha on April 2nd, 2007 11:17 am

i love havaianas! i have 10 pairs and counting.. haha. im just 18 yrs old and now my mom always buy me havaianas, she usually buy me rubber shoes and sneakers before! haha. but now, she collects them too. i love love love mom’s who enjoys and shares the same wants of their child! btw. havaianas addicts here in the phil call themselves havaianaticos. and some site at multiply.com they sell pre ordered havaianas which are not available here. try crilescrib.multiply.com tons of limited edition havaianas!

sexy mom: well, well, well…of course, we moms would rather buy our kids havaianas, rather than the expensive rubber shoes and sneakers. i have observed that lately, there was less demand for rubber shoes in my home, imagine the savings. thanks for the tip, will look at those sites.

  43. Bing on April 3rd, 2007 4:45 pm

gosh, i never thought that a pair of “ordinary slippers” could cost that much??? BF (that’s bestfriend), thanks for giving me a pair and letting me realize that these slippers are indeed “extra ordinary”; the comfort it gives to one’s feet are truly priceless!! by the way, just curious to know… whose feet are those? they look flawless… well, is that an added benefit for wearing a pair of original havaianas? hehehe…

sexy mom: gosh, too! we have been best friends 14 years, going 15, yet you still you do not know that those are my sexy feet? honestly, they are mine—they suit my havaianas don’t they? i am glad you liked your havaianas—as a best friend, you deserve wonderful flip flops for your wonderful feet, too. love ya, Bing! :)

I always tend to buy “ipanema” as a gift though i havent owned such. (though I know its rubber soles was so flexible unlike the cheaper ones) but its because there are no ipanema for men.

Suddenly i’ve tried cartunista of HAvaianas coz of the design (kinda kid at heart) and feel the comfort of walking round my bed..LOLz..

“myepinoy: Did you know that one campus in katipunan where my kid study was invaded by this brand of slipper? As a result, the school admin was forced to implement the no slipper policy during school days kasi halos lahat naka-tsinelas na (parang nasa beach) at kokonti na ang nakasapatos.

Is it really the comfort or the status attached to it? This is the question I always asks my kids.

sexy mom: so, our kids go to the same school—in ateneo. after classes, kids would immediately change their footwear from school shoes to havaianas. ateneo banned the practice, although they allow the boys to wear havaianas after intrams and on weekends.”

aha! so the dresscode really came from loyola heights.
now, we (mba students from rockwell) are not allowed to wear slippers even on saturdays.
too bad, i was getting used to my havaianas.

the first time i brought one was because my shoe broke when i accidentally fell on the stairs at APS.

when my dad learned that my new slippers were almost 800 pesos, he kept on complaining that it’s too expensive.

before that accident happened, i never imagined myslef buying a pair of havaianas. i thought they were too expensive and not my type. but i was wrong.

regarding the no slipper policy at katipunan, i have a niece, 3 nephews there. i guess, their grandmother (my aunt) is happy now. she keeps on complaining about what her granddaughters’ clothes and slippers when she goes to school. wala ba daw dresscode sa ateneo (loyola heights campus).

Here in Brazil a pair with solid color is costing R$ 15,00 or US$6,00. There are many others manufactures with cheaper products.

Now i´m using a ultra comfortable flip-flop made by Dupé, regional manufacturer. Dupé manufactures a model called “Dupé HXP” with a different rubber material, much more flexible and comfortable (compared with Havaianas standard rubber).
