My Countdown to the New Year Begins with Wishes for 13

I may be averse to the #13. It had in many instances connoted bad vibes for me, but in 2008 let me face this aversion and convert it into something positive—my countdown to the New Year. Let me share my candid wishes for the 13 who are close to my heart (group of many, group of 2 and individuals), wishes aside from good health, more wealth and abundant blessings from the Lord up above.

#13—for my friends.

May you all be blessed with your hearts’ desires—not only for material possessions but the spiritual as well.

May you all continue to live life as it should be lived—in harmony with the universe and at peace with oneself.

#12—for my mother.

May you continue to have the strength to take care of my family and my household. Without you, how could I have worked full time the past 27 years? And how could my children have wonderfully survived in between, having only you as a pseudo-mother, when I had to travel a lot the past 15 years?

#11—for my husband Alan.

May you continue to open up to us your family, and enjoy the laughter, the gimmickry, the fun, as we continue to grow with you in faith.

#10—for Angelo and Caren.

May you remain steadfast in your faith, believe all the more that Michael is in heaven now. May you have true peace in your hearts. You have suffered enough. You have grieved enough (I, too, have), but like you, I still do.

#9—for Monica.

May you be continuously assured of love of family foremost, and then love of friends. May you have more laughter, more twinkle in your eyes, even if you are not shopping. May you worry less, hope more.

#8—for BA.

May you be able to share more and more your love for Kuya Jesse with your friends. And yes, may your long wish list of 40 be granted, even if it will take 1 year or more. Together, let’s make them come true.

#7—for Vince.

May you have the college of your choice, and may it be the right one for you.

And yes, to finally have your “one time big time” dream laptop.

#6—for Angela.

May you be as healthy as ever albeit your aversion to meat.

May you have more time with family than with friends, and in the next few months may you know what interests you the most to prepare you for your college entrance tests.

#5—for Pauline.

May you have the gift of true friendship not only from one but from more. May your laughter continuously ring at home and in school, in the same pace as your incessant texting with friends. May you have an understanding of Florante at Laura, to prepare you for Fili and Noli.

You are so talented! May you all the more enjoy your pep activities, and your love for playing the piano and the guitar even if you do not have formal lessons.

#4—for Alan Jr.

May you continue to appreciate your new friends, enjoy your new games and have the food that you want at the right time. Yes, you may continue to be makulit with me—you have been my companion at home and outside for most of my time, and I truly appreciate that. And may I be able to pay you the P7th+ you said I owe you (from your 90+ grades, is that right?) so that you could buy your dream gadget.

May you grow more in knowledge to satisfy your continuous quench for answers to the whys, hows and whats that stir your imagination, enjoy your play, your colors, your toys, sleep more.

You are so smart and sweet at the same time. At your young age you already appreciate prayer.

You and Cate continue to be the family’s source of joy!

May you continue to be as sweet, albeit naughty, as ever and bring laughter and joy to your parents and to us your lolo, lola, aunts and uncles.

Finally, you. What can I wish for you? You are in heaven now—you have the best. I guess I will just ask you to help me pray to fulfill all the above wishes.

Remember, all of the wishes that your Lola has whispered to you? They have all been granted. You are my greatest interessor, you know that?
