Letting go at 12, Happy Birthday Alan, Jr.

He just popped up in our lives, an instant blessing. His elder sister, Pau was only 2 years old then, when I learned that I was pregnant—AGAIN! It was not news anymore, as I already had 6 children at that time. But by gosh! I already had 8 pregnancies (2 normal deliveries, 2 miscarriages, and 4 caesarian deliveries), a 9th pregnancy (and 5th caesarian delivery) would be oh, so risky! I didn’t mind what others had to say, all I knew was that my angel would take care of me when I deliver my baby. For those who do not know about my angel story, please read here.
And he came out into this world, a perfect baby—my child #7, a perfect number, a team of high risk doctors, in waiting. He must have been the most expensive child that I delivered. We named him Alan, Jr. I told hubby that he better take on the offer, as this was his last chance to have a son named after him.
Alan, Jr, whom we fondly call “Bingot”, which means “baby” in my native language, Kapampangan, has grown to be an independent boy. We have made several attempts to give him a nickname, other than “Bingot”, afraid that it would have a psychological effect on him, but we tend to slip back. He says, he doesn’t mind. Fondly, I always call him, “Baby”. Again, he said it does not bother him at all, besides he is not living up to his name as “Baby”. Alan Jr has a mind of his own, and no matter what his other siblings would do or say when discussions heat up, he won’t budge.
But he is oh so nice and sweet and ever helpful to them, especially with their computer problems, trouble shooting, games, html matters, and many others. Yes, he started learning these things early in school, but he is so advanced, even his teachers are amazed. As to his studies, his brothers tell him to start having study habits, they feel that right now, he has none. He has high grades in school, but he could do more, they tell him. I know it will come, but in the meantime, I just let him be—this is his responsibility . He has evolved from being just like anyone of his classmates and peers to being a leader, a class officer, a Rubik’s cube fanatic (he can solve the 3×3 in 35 seconds and the 2×2 in 10 seconds, still improving, though), a good swimmer, and a boy with many amazing abilities and things to share with his classmates.
This is my Alan Jr, today is his 12th birthday. I am so proud of him and so thankful, as he has been my companion for the last 2 years since I have taken early retirement. He is my homebody, from the time he comes home from school, we share hours and hours each day together. We watch movies together, go to bloggers’ events (he started blogging 6 months before I did), go to the supermarket, bike together, watch UAAP games together, and take care of the babies in CRIBS every Sundays. I learn a lot from him—he tells me about what he discovers while surfing the Internet, gives me tips, and many others.
He looks after my blogs, trouble shoots when some bugs come up, works on my htmls, and is still my tutor for the Mac keyboard and applications. He gives me a lot, while all I can give him is my presence at home, love and affection. Yes, I am taking advantage of the time that I have with him, soon, a few months down the road, he will have other interests, and a few years down the road, he will be a man of his own.
His birthday gift? For the first time, we are letting go—we have allowed him to join a 1-week camp in Baguio City, the first time he will be away from home.
Happy 12th Birthday, Alan Jr! We love you so much!
