UPDATE: On 15 January, the temperature dipped further, 7.5 degrees C in Baguio, 13.8 degrees C in Tuguegarao, and 15.6 degrees C in Tagaytay. It was 19.4 degrees C in Manila.

The temperature has been dipping significantly the past few days, such that it is about 5 degrees centigrade different from the climatological information given by the international weather authority, the World Weather Information Service of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Take a look at the weather forecast for Metro Manila—compare it against the climatological information (see tables below). While the forecast temperature in Metro Manila is a minimum of 18 degrees centigrade, the climatological information for January is 23.5, a difference of about 5 degrees. Climatological information is based on monthly averages for the 30-year period 1971-2000. The forecast for Baguio is 9 degrees centigrade. There have been reports of death because of the very cold weather in our country.

Global warming continues, despite the cold snap, according to the WMO:

The Secretary-General of WMO, Michel Jarraud, told journalists last week that, despite the current cold snap in Europe, the major trend remained unmistakably one of warming. “If we look at the trajectory over the last 160 years”, he said “it overlays a large natural variability, and that’s what causes confusion”.

The cooler weather that was a hallmark of 2008 could be explained partly by La Niña, a reversal of the phenomenon by which warm waters build up on the surface of the Pacific.

While Europe and America freezes, rains and floods hit some parts of our very own country,  and in Fiji and Mozambique.

Let us enjoy the cool weather while it lasts for a few more weeks, because the sooner summer comes in March, we have to brace ourselves for another extreme—warm to hot weather.
