Healthy is Best!

May 21st, 2007 by Sexy Mom · Viewed 5391 times · 25 Comments

In my desire to convince at least my 3 girls, and maybe some of you out there, that “healthy is better than skinny”, “skinny is not sexy”, and that “slim is not necessarily sexy and healthy”, I am sharing here an interesting response from Joe Carroll to my post, “Would You Rather Be Skinny or Sexy?

“The sexiest girls are slim and athletic. Low body fat does not mean unhealthy, quite the opposite. You can have a very healthy low fat diet and look great or you can keep sitting down and chewing on the snacks and guzzling soda pop and try to convince yourself that fat is attractive. Besides NFL linebackers and Sumo wrestlers, athletes are generally pretty trim.

In the grocery store I see what people are buying. Carts are filled with all sorts of sugary pre-packaged crap and soda pop. That’s what people eat these days. I ride my bike past a McDonalds and that place is always packed; usually with fat people. How can people stand to eat that stuff? Not only is it loaded with fat and grease and poisons, it quite simply tastes horrible. I see my fat neighbors drive to the McDonalds too. They live about 800 feet from the place and drive. No, they don’t stop in for coffee on the way to work, they drive there, eat, and then drive home. No doubt just in time for some more TV. No wonder everyone is fat!

Try drinking water instead of carbonated sugared poison. Try eating actual food instead of who-knows-what in a plastic bag. Try turning off the TV and doing something.

You don’t need to diet or stress out. Just eat real food and get some excersise. In no time at all, you’ll look great and feel great. It’s not the big problem people make it out to be. BTW, real food is a lot cheaper than pre-packaged poison.”

What caught my attention are his words “pre-packaged poison”. Come to think of it, these foods, packed with sugars, fats, grease and all the crap—indeed, make one fat and unhealthy. While looking at the nutrient content of juices and the so called “high powered” energy drinks, all i can see is sugar, sugar and sugar, plus the flavoring, be it apple, grape, strawberry, etc. Even the “tea” cold drinks are laced with heps and heaps of sugar. That is why a good percentage of Filipinos, including children, are obese. It’s really high time that we seriously look into our diets and what we feed our children, and rectify our old ways. It’s really high time that we take on that excercise to keep our bodies trim and sexy. A lot of us have been thinking of the easy way out, saving up for a Belo body sculpting, or dreaming of a New York liposuction. Here are what my kids and I have discovered for fun and excercise:

  • Some of my kids and I enjoy biking in the Quezon Memorial Circle, where they have a fairly good biking area. You can either bring your own bikes or rent one for P70/hour.

  • Some of my kids frequent the Moro Lorenzo Gym in the Ateneo de Manila (membership is P1,400/month). If you are not a member you can still jog around their indoor oval for P30 (no time limit within the day), and an additional P20 for the shower

  • Two of my kids go to the DANSA dance studio in V Luna for their dance workshops (by Groove Central). They also go to the Cub Gymnastica in Pasig for their gymnastics.

  • There is also TRUMPETS, now moved from Shangrila Mall to The Podium, for their musical theater and street dancing workshops.

  • We go to the Sunken Garden in UP for a jog late in the afternoon.

  • Malling is fun time walking around the large expanse, though it is not always good for the pocket.

  • At home, if one is not confined in the comforts of an air-conditioned room, one can always experience a sauna-like ambience, what with the sweltering summer heat. My question is, will I lose a few pounds when I sweat?

  • Weights come in handy in some parts of the house.

With summer almost over, soon, we will have to think of ways to keep up with the excercise, time permitting after classes.

indulge in Belo’s Beauty 101, premiering on TFC by 27th May (or so, i believe). quezon memorial circle is a practical idea; my kids walk our dogs every sunday morning thereat.

re fats, avoid saturated fats and/or trans fat, but indulge in good sources of HDL. maintain a good supply of systemic omega 3 fatty acids (commonly found in fish fat, esp. salmon) and omega 6 fatty acids (found in vegetable oils). that way, you maintain not just physical appearance but nourishes the heart and brain, as well.

btw, i prefer sexy to skinny.

sexy mom: true, true, we should avoid saturated and/or trans fats. good we have a good supply of fish locally. QMC is still a good place to walk, jog, bike and walk the dogs. i might have seen your kids walking their dogs, who knows? my kids would always stop and try to be friendly when they see those who walk their dogs.

Trying to be skinny, being those anorexic bone-protruding thin is one that annoys me. Here in HK, people are obsessed by that. I wonder why the dress that you see on mannequins are the same clothes you see on the street.

Being healthy doesn’t mean you need to be skinny, we should be healthy inside. Ugh, now I need a foot massage, it helps to unblock that energy and allow it to flow freely.

sexy mom: i agree. and yes, a foot massage is always a welcome delight.

I’m eating chips as I am reading this. Haha. Anxiety, anxiety, anxiety. WAAAAH. Dad’ll kill me for scratching the car. :( Munch munch.

I jog by the Sunken Garden early morning, mind you. :)

sexy mom: that’s all right BA, accidents do happen—but please be careful! we want you to be safe.

glad you are now doing your share of exercise, but then munch, munch, munch.

  • sasha // May 21, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Ehem, I’ll be going back to the gym soon, tita. I am overweight and I would love to be healthy once again. I’m not getting any younger :)

    sexy mom: good luck, Sasha!

  • verns // May 21, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Kung ano yung bawal, yun kasi ang masarap hehe :) I meant food of course.

Sometimes its also in the culture. In the US, there are a lot of obese people kasi everything comes in big sizes. They say people in HK are thin coz they love to walk. Maybe that’s true coz when I was there everybody was like walking hehe

sexy mom: you are right, and not only culture—environment, too.

Thanks sexy mom for calling my attention about the difficulty in putting in comments in my McShaker post. I didn’t notice that the post had problems. I’ve since reposted and you can now put in your comments.

Interesting post too on being healthy.

sexy mom: thanks, too, Em Dy.

nice nice post… i am actually health conscious too!...

Before i exercise regularly… medyo busy lang ngayoan.. and dahil din sa sakit ko ngayon , di namakakapag papawis. walang strength eh

sexy mom: do get well soon!

  • auee // May 21, 2007 at 7:32 pm

Fit & healthy, yup that’s my goal, too. I don’t understand this need for size 0 bodies. Here in London, most office workers I see have got “normal” body shapes but the most of the teenagers are nearly stick-thin.

BTW, I keep remembering you & your girls holding your stomachs in. I noticed that in the last 2 weeks in my efforts to keep a good posture I have been holding my tummy back
    :-P

sexy mom: my girls will surely smile at your comments, auee.

  • haze // May 21, 2007 at 9:00 pm

The only secret to have a healthy body and mind is to indulge ourselves in sports. At home we make it to a point that weekends are reserve to do recreational activities like tennis, biking, trekking, rollerblading, badminton etc!

I am proud that my 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter love trekking and football! When we go at the park they put their energy in a never ending playing football and running! At ang dala ko na merienda prutas po o kaya yogourt !

I guess, it depends to us parents on how we will educate our children to eat balance diet and to have an activity without forcing them. Nakikita kasi nila sa amin that we like to do things rather than staying at home watching TV or playing video games! It’s a waste of time! In addition to this, I rarely buy coca cola, sweets and junky at home!

Your children are beautiful with a Million dollar smile ;) !

sexy mom: you are right, Haze, it is a matter of how well we educate our children. trouble with us here in Manila is that there are lots of distractions, lots of places (i mean malls, food shops) to go to, etc.

  • chesca silva // May 21, 2007 at 9:35 pm

this reminds me…instead of sitting here reading blogs—i really should exercise.
forget about trying to look good—exercise promotes good sleep! (and I always looking for means and ways to improve that)

    thanks for the reminder.

sexy mom: we can exercise and still read blogs afterwards, though.

  • Girlie // May 21, 2007 at 11:14 pm

pero masarap and “pre packaged poison” =) but not everyday of course.

we go biking at mall of asia, isang ikot is like 3 kilometers, tapos breakfast at mcdo, hehe

sexy mom: wish MOA were accessible to us (we live up north, QMC is very close to our home).

I’m trying out this sauna suit made up of 100% PVC and so far, I’ve been sweating like a faucet every time I wear it especially while exercising.I bought it from Toby’s for only P350! Couple this with veggies and fish diet plus Xenadrine (fat burner pills). I’m really hoping I get slimmer with these. Ang kalaban ko kasi dito genes ng mom ko. All the women in our family grow fat as they grow old. I don’t wanna be like that sana.

sexy mom: interesting, that PVC thing. but xenadrine—i’m afraid this should be taken under medical supervision.

  • pining // May 22, 2007 at 12:43 am

so true, sexy mom, most manufactured foods are saturated with loads of crap nowadays, it’s still best to prepare your own so you know what you’re taking in, and yeah, exercise is the best! keep going :-)

sexy mom: we have to have creative ideas, with the kids out of the house during school days.

[...] This post is in response to Dine Racoma, a.k.a. Sexy Mom’s post. [...]

    sexy mom:

    hi, Keysi,

I HAVE POSTED THIS COMMENT IN YOUR BLOG SITE TWICE, but it does not seem to be accepted. I wonder why.

Thank you for responding to my post, as you mentioned, not to defend the people who frequent fast food joints, but to present the side of the people who work for call centers.

If you may note, I too for so many years before I took early retirement from ADB, was a fast food person, even if I had a lot of options, working just a few feet away from the Mega Mall. Day in and day out, for the past 15 years since Mega Mall opened, I and my friends would have lunch in just any fast food joint, McD, KFC, Jollibee, Pizza Hut, Shakeys, being the favorites and most frequented. The joke was, if our tummies were opened at any given time, one would find bits and pieces of these food clinging in our intestines. Please stress the word OPTION.

It’s a pity most call centers, as you pointed out, do not have OPTIONS, to provide their workers with healthier food. This is perhaps a wake up call to call center operators and to fast food and coffee shops that are open 24/7 who cater mostly to call center operators. It can also be a wake up call for our government to take initiative in providing call center workers, whom you say pay the government the right taxes, options for a healthier lifestyle—in term of options for healthy food and even exercise facilities.

My intention in writing that post was to stress that “Healthy is Best”, and for parents to take initiative in giving their children a healthier lifestyle. Now that you have written about it, I guess this should start the ball rolling, for HEALTHIER OPTIONS FOR CALL CENTER WORKERS, and even perhaps the other sectors of society and labor as well.

You have pretty girls, sexy mom!
I’ve given up soda and chips long time ago. I’m glad I don’t keep them at home anymore so my kids don’t have easy access to them.
My daughter PAtch wants to take gymnastics. Where in pasig is Club Gymnastica? Thanks.

sexy mom: thanks, Chateau. Club Gymnastica is in Kapitolyo Pasig, across Mini Stop. My son has promised to give me the contact details, which I will pass on to you. Yes—they have trainers there.

  • tina // May 22, 2007 at 10:23 am

i so agree with you! its better one be healthy than try to be skinny or whatsoever.

ako naman im beginning to have weird feelings seeing people stuff soo many food in their stomach.. parang im being aware in a very weird way that I have to watch what I eat.

Here at home we have… fruits most of the time. We eliminated MSG 12 years ago, since my dad had his stroke.. we eliminated pork along with MSG as well. We rarely eat the so-called scavengers of the sea. We rarely have beef… mostly fishes.

We also have RAW veggies during the nights and no more heavy meals at night. We re-invent new ways… to try to live healthy.

and during mornings we have our morning walks, the mini gym at home serves its purpose as well. Nowadays, people are more and more.. aware abouttheir health na din.

    You have pretty daughters.

SexyMom: MSG has also been banned from my home a few years ago. at first my mom would not believe me (you know how it is with the oldies). now, we try to be conscious with the food we eat. though of course every now and then we still indulge in the not so healthy fast foods.

  • feng // May 22, 2007 at 10:33 am

    hello there sexy mom.

this post of yours hit me straight (in my belly fats) :). i’m so guilty of not eating so healthy. i always resort to eating at fastfood esp. at times i’m in a rush at work, we tend to order for deliveries. i have my healthy baon with me (i share a slice of what i cook for Nico and his Yaya for breakfast and lunch), but temptations to eat out is just so seducing.

thanks for reminding, it’s a wake up call for me.
BTW, your three girls in the photo are so pretty. :)

off topic sexy mom, it’s the second time now that i recovered your comment in Akismet as spam. i wonder why? did you change your ISP/server? Chateau told me, she also got your comment in her one of her entries in the list of spam comments.

SexyMom: and this comes straight from my SexyHeart dear Feng (i can’t say SexyFlabs, ouch!)—thanks for the nice words about my daughters.

Yes, i have been victim to akismet spam lately. and i have also noticed a lot of comments going there, so i always check out.

  • Belle // May 22, 2007 at 10:58 am

i don’t know if i have the authority at all to comment on this issue as no matter how careful i am with the food that i consume, and adamant about exercising, still, something goes wrong. and i don’t have a clue. i detest pop, not a fast food eater, eat meat sparingly, eat a lot of fish and veggies, not a sweet eater, a tea-drinker, a healthy concoction drinker, still i am a failure. could it be stress?

nevertheless, exercise combined with proper diet is still the proper way to go.

SexyMom: I understand how you feel, Belle. It is really always a struggle. The way I see it, stress affects people differently.

  • Kyels // May 22, 2007 at 11:21 am

It’s better to be healthy and there are many ways to keep fit other than going on a diet … [:

Plus, beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder!

    SexyMom: true, Kyels.

  • bw // May 22, 2007 at 11:21 am

Absolutely right… I’m health conscious too and very selective of what I eat but couldn’t control the quantity ! Dunno but self help doesn’t work great for me. As well, my wife has to go along with me for it to be effective. Maybe both if us should get into or enroll into a professional program :)

SexyMom: sometimes it is really a struggle!

  • jireh // May 22, 2007 at 2:44 pm

hi miss dine :) lately i’ve been anxious with my weight. I’ve indeed gained weight for the past few weeks due to eating fastfood. And now, I feel like I can’t move comfortably in my uniforms. And it really shows that I’ve gained weight :(

SexyMom: is it a wake up call?

  • dexie // May 23, 2007 at 2:24 am

eat moderately and exercise a lot

    that’s my “diet” : http://djscharm.com

SexyMom: how is it coming along now? i bet, by this time, you are already counting less and less—in inches and pounds!

  • annamanila // May 24, 2007 at 7:32 am

How can we work out some while being online at same time? And I don’t mean working out the typing fingers. Hehe. Maybe when the words or ideas don’t come, we kick box the pc or the laptop. Great way perhaps of venting frustrations and breaking writer’s block?

Congrats for this post! It’s all up to us to pick up what we can from these healthytips, given our lifestyles and the limitations of work, responsibilities, etc. I don’t see here any indictment of people who have constraints in following the prescriptions.

More, more! I need these. Many people do.

SexyMom: true, true, Annamanila, we can only be innovative, perhaps?

    Hi SexyMom,

We’ll be in Pasig in August, and I’m hoping my 9-yr-old duaghter Alyssa can work out with the team at Club Gymnastica in Pasig. I’m not sure where Mini-Stop is, but we’ll be near the Ever Gotesco Mall almost everyday. Alyssa is Level 6 and wants to keep working out (and that will offset Lola’s amazing Pancit Malabon!). Can you help advise? I hope it works out. Thanks, and best regards! —Rich

Always good to read about Rollerblading, my ex was of olympic standards..

Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive, is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
