Glossy Monday–My World Turning Upside Down

August 6th, 2007 by Sexy Mom · Viewed 1913 times · 34 Comments

Today, the first Monday of the month (and every first Monday of the month thereafter, Pinoy Moms Network members share photos through the Fam Pics project. This month’s theme is Glossy. Here is my entry. I actually had 3 photos to choose from, but in the end, better judgment prevailed—I chose the one closest to my heart—Vince’s photo, which I will call “my world turning upside down”. Let the two others just be bonuses.

.

Maybe because I was away too long most of the time the past 10 years, traveling almost 1/3rd of the time, I didn’t realize that my kids have come to develop their own unique traits and talents. Slowly and literally, I have come to know my kids in their “worlds upside down”.
.

My Boys

Vince for one is not only one who is bent on his studies. He is a school leader involved in many activities of the high school student body, at the same he does break dancing, and theater. Gosh, I didn’t realize he could do these cartwheels, headstands, handstands and all, at the same time raking honors in class.

BA, my boy who in grade school was the shyest in class—he would blush the moment his teacher called him for recitation, has become confident from the time he was given a lead role in the Ateneo Children’s Theater when he was in grade 6. There was no stopping him after that—he danced, he sang, he was a leader, he writes well (oh, he has his own creative style, I am inclined to say that he even writes better than I do). His course at the State University? Applied Physics.

J Angelo, my eldest child, now a parent himself. Responsible, I may say, though my world turned upside down when he announced that he has retired from work at age 24 (from his work as senior economist at NEDA, and then with a private IT firm), to go into professional blogging. I may say he is sucessful in what he is doing now. Was I not called “J Angelo’s mother” when I was just starting to blog?

Alan, Jr., my youngest son, my baby, my young blogger. This boy is independent, and he spends most of his time with me, in between computer games. Why, he is the “adviser” to his brothers when it comes to computer games, software and hardware. He plays scrabble, both online and the real one, sometimes even beating me. School is ok, he has good grades, no pressure. I know, soon, he will be like his siblings, he will bloom, in his own way.

My Girls (who have asked not to name their blogs, which are in friendster and multiply, btw)

Pauline, on the other hand, is with her high school’s PEP squad competing team. Same as Vince, she does difficult stunts—more difficult ones, she is training very hard. Lately, I have observed her working through the night with her projects and homework, in between playing the piano and strumming her guitars.

Angela acts well and sings well, a leader in her own right, responsible. My world turned upside down when she got sick—with proper medical care and our loving attention, she is fully recovered now.

Monica, my eldest daughter. No one took her seriously—even she herself did not take herself seriously. She didn’t take her studies, from grade school through college seriously. She had a stint in the show, Ang TV (chosen among 2,000 auditionees) when she was 11 years old. My world turned upside down when she became a “star”, I had to be a stage mother, I had to deal with her new world—a world of make believe. When she was in college, she told us that she was in her college’s PEP squad competing team, I was amazed when I saw her compete. Who would think that she would be in law school—she is now in her senior year, maintaining grades fit for an honor student.

Again, my world turned upside down when I finally went into early retirement—it is now a normal world. With “my world turning upside down” many times over, with all the struggles my family continues to go through, the ups and downs, the highs and lows, you might wonder why up to this moment, I am still sane. That is the essence of life, I guess—a world of struggles, acceptance, faith, and LOVE!

Take a word—any word. Ask a dozen people to define it and their definitions may vary depending on what they associate the word with. “Glossy” is defined by dictionary.com as “having a shiny or lustrous surface” but to a mother, it can evoke anything from humorous to infuriating to inspiring and profound.
