A Mother’s Bag of Tricks

April 11th, 2007 by Sexy Mom · Viewed 2478 times · 47 Comments

Ma, I forgot to bring a hanky—take this extra hanky, or here, use a tissue instead.

Forgot the make up kit? Use mine. Need an ID picture? Here!

Mirror, please, or a safety pin, or a hair brush, a comb, name it, it’s there—in mother’s bag of tricks.

Ouch, I hurt myself! Band-aid, Bactroban, Vandol.

A mini pair of scissors, a mini sewing kit, flashlight, even a tiny screw driver, a pen, a sign pen, spare batteries, a camera, a flash disc.

Forgot to brush your teeth? Oh, dear, take some breath fresheners or mints.

Stuck in traffic? Take sky flakes, or oreo, chocolates, candies, gum.

Bored? Crossword puzzles, sudoku, rubik’s cube, nowadays, iPod.

Hot? Cologne here, oil blotter, alcogel, towelettes, lotion.

Ran out of load? There are spare cell cards, globe, sun.

Need information? a directory, a magazine, some call cards.

Afraid? A rosary, a small prayer.

During children’s parties, “bring me a dollar coin, a dollar bill, a yellow thing, a blue thing…

And the list goes on and on and on.

It’s amazing, why each time a son or daughter asks for something, it’s there—in mother’s bag of tricks.

If the item is not there—mother’s bag of tricks would always have substitutes or contingencies, even extra pesos to spare.

Yes, it’s true, there are times when I would like to carry a tiny bag. This does not stop me though from having another bag on standby—mother’s bag of tricks.

Simply put, moms trouble shoot, moms anticipate, moms love! All is there—in mother’s bag of tricks!

Only problem is, every time we go out, they always say “Mom, palagay sa bag!”.

Cellphones, wallets, Ipods, PSPs, notebooks and even slippers.

So it’s their bag of tricks as well.

Bwahahahaha

sexy mom: oh, twas a typo, PSP lang paala, not PSPs.

  • melai // Apr 11, 2007 at 1:11 am

hahahaha! nabuko na may humihingi ng PSP tita sexy mom? lol!! supermom talaga :) just like may wondernanay :)

  • purplegirl // Apr 11, 2007 at 1:45 am

with 7 kids, you must, must carry a HUGE bag. i only have one child and my bag is gigantic. i amaze people when they need something and i have it in my handbag — plastic spoon, fork, knife, toys, band-aids, soap, ziploc bags, bib, the list goes on…

  • dimaks // Apr 11, 2007 at 1:47 am

Japanese guys students also wear shoulder bags :D

  • Linnor // Apr 11, 2007 at 4:30 am

Uy relate ako dito… The problem with me lang, sometimes I forget what I have in my bag. Jerry, my hubs, calls it “the black hole” kasi pati old pieces of paper and wrappers are still inside, di nailalabas. :D

  • dexie // Apr 11, 2007 at 4:37 am

i have one of those bags. i practically live in it..LOL.

  • KK // Apr 11, 2007 at 5:05 am

Wow galing ah! My bag of tricks was stolen last summer which contained my wallet and credit cards. I had to leave it in the car when I brought my daughter to the community pool. I have sworn off having such a bag and now I carry a tiny purse so I can bring it anywhere.

Because of your post Sexy mom, I think I have to assemble a bag of tricks only this time not to put any valuables.

  • Alex // Apr 11, 2007 at 5:26 am

    Yey! Moms to the rescue.

If there’s one group of people who’d outclass Angus MacGyver and his Swiss army knife, it’d be moms and their bags. They’d even put Santa and his big red bag to shame.

  • carey // Apr 11, 2007 at 7:53 am

uy, this reminds me of the Barney bag! lots of magic and wonderful stuff inside. :)
with all that stuff inside, your bag must be heavy!

  • Flori // Apr 11, 2007 at 9:01 am

And actually, my friends and brother do this to me and my bag as well. For some reason I become Mommy to them. Hmm…

“During children’s parties, “bring me a dollar coin, a dollar bill, a yellow thing, a blue thing…”

Oh my… hahaha! Brings back memories. Come to think of it, it’s the mommies who are the ones scrambling to find the requisites. The kids just stand there and wait for their mothers to hand the stuff to them.

  • The New Parent // Apr 11, 2007 at 9:28 am

Hi SM–OK, now I understand why a woman’s bag is so BIG (laugh)!

Moms are truly indespensible and as you put it great trouble shooters. And, when I look back on my childhood, I realize what you are saying.

    Wonderful post, thank you!

  • lady cess // Apr 11, 2007 at 11:09 am

    hahaha! i can so relate!

when i was younger my mom was always irked at the countless times we had to ask her to put our things in her bag. now, it’s my turn. and apparently, every mom has a magic bag :)

  • Pau ♥ // Apr 11, 2007 at 12:24 pm

    “slippers”
hindi nga?:)) kay mox lang kayaa. :P

  • feng // Apr 11, 2007 at 12:54 pm

haha. you’re bag of tricks is so admirable sexy mom. i think i have to add some stuff you mentioned in my bag also because as of now, it contains: milk canisters, one or two milk bottles, Nico’s change clothes and undies, acete de mansanilla, baby wipes. i somehow was relieved because now i need not bring some baby stuff anymore like rattles coz he’s grown up.

i didn’t realized i still have to add so many more in the bag of tricks. just now. :)

  • Shari // Apr 11, 2007 at 1:16 pm

I couldn’t help imagining this post as something in a scene from a Disney movie. :D

  • Girlie // Apr 11, 2007 at 1:37 pm

i do that when we travel…

when my kids used to attend children’s parties, i put stuffs for the bring me game too =)

good im used to bringing big bags, my kids start to stuff things too like ipod and gameboy

  • iskoo // Apr 11, 2007 at 2:22 pm

dapat talaga pala matibay ang bag mo, at ang maganda you dont have to go to gym kasi practisado ka na sa weights. hehe

  • tin-tin // Apr 11, 2007 at 3:38 pm

  • vince // Apr 11, 2007 at 4:04 pm

female teenagers are trained for this already as they could fit a lot of stuff in their tiny hand bags. :P i still wonder how girls could fit colognes, cameras, cellphones, napkins, make up kits, and a lot more in just one really small bag :| hahaha!

sexy mom: being with your sisters, and girlfriend, and girl friends, you should know by now the anatomy of their bags. sometimes, their things land in your bag as well. love you Vince!

  • chic // Apr 11, 2007 at 6:13 pm

hahaha! this is so funny but so true! that’s why i can’t bring a small bag too! everything’s in there! = )

sexy mom: when everything is in a small bag, that would be more of magic!

  • pauline // Apr 11, 2007 at 7:20 pm

i also have a magic bag! haha.. i don’t know, but something just doesn’t feel right whenever there’s a limit with regard to the stuff i have to bring.

sexy mom: interesting to know what is in an incoming college freshman’s bag.

  • kathy // Apr 11, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Naku, I could totally relate to this! I began using big bags when my daughter was born. I guess motherhood can do that to you.

  • Tiffany // Apr 11, 2007 at 8:27 pm

my mom doesn’t have her magic bag XD though i always DO ask her to keep my things! haha.

sexy mom: same principle, dear, pa-bag, pa-keep!

  • Kyels // Apr 11, 2007 at 11:07 pm

My Mommy can definitely relate to this. Hehe!

sexy mom: am sure y.our mom will relate

  • auee // Apr 11, 2007 at 11:31 pm

    Very astute! :-)

People often gasp at how big my bag is. On my side, I can’t imagine how people with kids survive with a small purse! I thought I was an exception, then I saw “One fine day” where Michelle Pfeiffer was carrying a bag with all sorts of “tricks”. Then I’ve met mums here who also carry huge bags.

    re: “Mom, palagay sa bag!”
It used to bug me… But I found the solution… Hubby carries the bag for me
    :-)

sexy mom: and look at comment #13, hubby carries the bag.

  • Toni // Apr 12, 2007 at 5:46 am

Now I know why my mom always had so much in her bag. My stepfather used to tease her that she carries the house with her. I am not yet a mom but I have noticed I am almost one when I go on excursions with the kids at work. My bag is full of almost anything, you’ll never know what we might need.

sexy mom: well, well, you’re practicing already.

  • Mari // Apr 12, 2007 at 6:46 am

Yes, yes, mother must always have everything in their purse…except, the kitchen sink. LOL

sexy mom: thanks for the laugh! the kitchen sink!

  • princess // Apr 12, 2007 at 7:35 am

Bow na ako sa ‘yo, Dine. You don’t look like one who has had 7, I repeat, seven, kids!!! How do you stay the way you do? Congrats to your hubby for keeping you so young. Loved your youngest son’s blog entry.
I guess that’s why I was give three boys only. Have a nice week.
    Princess

sexy mom: 3 boys! and you are their Princess.

  • vicky // Apr 12, 2007 at 7:39 am

how true.. am also the ‘trash can’ during drives. e.g. i offer them a candy or gum, they hand me back the wrappers- it’s great to be needed haha! those were the days as they are all nearly gone now.

sexy mom: yes, i forgot the wrappers. that’s true.

  • dad // Apr 12, 2007 at 9:23 am

now I know where I got my frozen shoulder. someday it is going to be an empty nest but beautiful memories will remain in that bag. 7 treasures that we cherish day to day, everyday. including the interests – pia and cate.. lolove

  • Daphne // Apr 12, 2007 at 12:46 pm

    Hahaha this is so true!
It reminds me of that commercial I forgot na which product. The family was on a long road trip on a bus and the mother kept bringing out things from her bag to entertain her kids. At one point she even brought out their little pet puppy. Heh!

sexy mom: my kids say, it’s Presto Creme.

  • mr nice ash // Apr 12, 2007 at 12:48 pm

    wow. girl scout. :)

    sexy mom: laging handa

  • julie // Apr 12, 2007 at 12:58 pm

I do have a bag of tricks too. In it are some colored rubber bands for the girls’ hair, mini-maglite, mints, lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, tissue, wipes, cologne, small comb, cellphone, coin purse, batteries, sd cards, earphones. But the real bag of tricks or more like a basket of tricks is in the car where change of clothing plus swimming gears plus undies, toiletries and towel and outdoor toys are kept. Hurray for our bag of tricks! :)

sexy mom: and the list goes and on — the bag of tricks is simply amazing!

  • Christianne // Apr 12, 2007 at 6:40 pm

Hehe ang galing! PSPs, iPods, I can’t imagine what my daughter will be asking me to carry 10 years from now.

sexy mom: oh, i cannot imagine. technology is so fast nowadays, that’s sometimes it’s so difficult to catch up.

  • haze // Apr 12, 2007 at 11:42 pm

I think i’m out of this bag of tricks Tita, tamad po kasi ako magdala ng bag ! I want to go light as much as possible except when I am off for vacation :) ! I don’t even have a make up kit hehehe !

sexy mom: one day will come when i will be liberated from my bag of tricks-when the kids get older.

  • annamanila // Apr 13, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Your bag is magical. Did I have such a bag — well in a way, though my ‘survival kit’ wasn’t that well thought of.

Now, its my children who’s putting together a bag of tricks for me. haha

  • ghee // Apr 13, 2007 at 11:30 pm

moms bag is a magic bag! haha! thats what i call mine :)

sexy mom: yes, Ghee – a magic bag, indeed!

  • vk // Apr 14, 2007 at 11:21 pm

    heheheh
    funny isn´t it?

sexy mom: hi, Vicki! it is always a pleasure receiving your emails, and reading your comments. yes, sometimes it is also good to carry nothing. it’s liberating!

    thanks for sharing…………

  • kimmy // Apr 15, 2007 at 3:56 pm

sexy mom: hi, Kimmy, I miss the company, the poems, and the essays.

  • greenpinoy // Apr 15, 2007 at 9:02 pm

  • Chateau // Apr 16, 2007 at 10:24 am

I always refer to my bag (and most probably most mommies’) as the Mary Poppins bag. You never know what will pop out of it! Kulang nalang nga yung coat hanger and potted plant LOL. I (AND MY FAMILY) can’t live without my big bag hehe.. So i totally am with you, Dine!

sexy mom: yes, Mary Poppins bag, same as my magic bag of tricks.

  • Rach // Apr 17, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Hi Dine. Sorry I haven’t been able to visit lately ‘coz I’ve been quite busy this past weekend.

I like this post because I can relate. Whenever I go out with my son, I bring two backpacks and a “milk/food” bag. One backpack contains extra change of clothes, a cap, first aid kid, toiletries and a small bottle of distilled water. This is the bag I bring out of the car. The other backpack stays in the car containing more clothes, a jacket, small blanket and a few toys/books. The other bag has milk, cookies or biscuits, some snacks and extra water.

I always want to be prepared and I like bringing extra stuff just in case.

  • Toni // Apr 19, 2007 at 8:51 am

That’s so nice! Mommy na mommy talaga. :) You’re such a “Girl Scout.” :D

  • Lulu // Apr 24, 2007 at 2:27 pm

yes dine i can relate to the bag of tricks. guess i got my “frozen shoulder” from this habit. pero it’s nice when you can produce whatever is needed anytime…feeling ko hero ako parati…

sexy mom: hi, Lulu! i do miss you, and our dear friends! past few weeks have been busy busy busy days for me!

  • REX // Apr 30, 2007 at 9:44 am

Haha, so true Tita Dine! But alas, I dont get to avail of Mama’s bag of tricks since 2nd year HS, cos she’s with Papa in Bahrain.

But being ‘extra prepared’ is probably one of the things I get from her. In college, I’m usually the one with ‘extra’ things. My 5 other (guy) housemates usually turn to me, “Kuya, may food ka ba diyan?” “Pahiram ng stapler” “Pahingi ng yellow pad” Oh my, am I turning into a Mom?! Haha!

  • Gina // Jun 1, 2007 at 11:03 pm

Oh,yes Dine I have read this post before! :) )
I really find it so amusing and soooo mommy! I read in one of the comments about the puppy that the mom took out of her bag in that commercial- I was still in the Phils. that time when that Tv ad was shown, napapa-smile ako . Are you sure you were not that mom? lol!
