Modern communication has provided us a lot of benefits in the past few years. It has made connections so instantaneous that it is impossible not to contact anyone, anywhere in the world. Modern communication has also made the world relatively smaller as information and communication can be exchanged at the press of a button making travel unnecessary.

One beneficiary of this massive improvement of communication is the academe. Many schools now offer online lessons and you can even earn a degree without leaving the confines of your home.  All you will need is a computer and Internet access.

Knowledge and learning isn’t about location but opportunity as the saying goes, and this is particularly true for online learning as millions of students are currently enrolled in online schools and universities. With attendance growing steadily over the years–at least 30%, more and more students are realizing the benefits of an online education.

Here are a few advantages to pursuing a degree online.

• Convenience. One of the biggest reasons why online schooling is so popular is the convenience it brings. Course requirements and lessons are sent to students so they have a free hand in scheduling their study and testing. People with day jobs or who travel a lot can complete the requirements for their courses without giving up much cost and time.
• Accessibility. With most of the materials uploaded to sites, students will have everything they need to finish the course literally at their fingertips. Students won’t miss any of the important lectures because it’s just a matter of them going online.
• Reduced costs. Since online students are not attending traditional classes, the money spent is considerably less. No expensive college textbooks, no moving into student housings, no reason to leave the house to learn.
• Geography. With distance no longer a hurdle to learning, students can access professors and resource people who are miles away through video conference calls. And tardiness to lectures will almost never be an issue.
• Anonymity. With the privacy offered by the Internet, students can participate in discussions and lectures without the fear of being ridiculed if they can’t keep up with the professor or students. They are spared the embarrassment of their poor grades being revealed to the whole class as well.
• Availability. This makes the professors more approachable as any questions or clarifications can be done one-on-one through email, instant messaging or FTP sites. Students don’t have to wait for consultation hours and the instruction they’re getting from the professors are more customized to their needs.
• More resources. Traditional schools are limited to their school libraries and resources. With an online environment to your schooling the whole world’s knowledge is available to students. This helps students form a more complete point of view as they are exposed and learn from different perspectives.

Traditional colleges and universities will always be there to offer knowledge but online learning offers an alternative based on the benefits listed above. But just as students take their time when choosing the college or university to attend, so must students consider an online education. It’s best that potential students read up on the online programs they’re thinking about attending and weigh the pros and cons of taking the online education route before coming to a decision about their future.
