Let us be proud of Willy Wang—he won the gold medal in the combined events of men’s nanquan and nangun (bare fists) yesterday.

Wushu is only a demonstration sport, so Wang’s victory will not count in the regular medal standings.

Two more athletes from the Philippines, Benjie Rivera and Mary Jane Estimar, won bronze medals in the demonstration sport after they defeated their opening-phase opponents also on Friday.

Rivera beat Kamel Mohamed of Egypt 2-0 in the men’s 56kg sanshou (combat) event, while Estimar won over Ambra Vielmi of Italy 2-1 in the 52kg sanshou.

Last Thursday, Marian Mariano also assured herself of a bronze by making the semifinals in the 60kg sanshou category.

Estimar vowed to improve on her showing as the tournament progresses. She was not satisfied with her performance, and promised to improve on that.

The semifinal matches for Rivera, Estimar and Mariano’s are set today, Saturday.

This reminds us of the gold medal won by Arianne Cerdeña in the 1988 Seoul Olympics for bowling? The medal did not count because bowling was an exhibition sport.

    Dear Dine,

When I learned last night that Willy Wang won gold in wushu, I was so proud of this Tsinoy guy. I even saw him being interviewed. At least we will bring home a gold medal, although it is not counted in the medal distribution list, wushu being an exhibition game.

Congratulations to Willy Wang and also to Benjie Rivera/Mary Jane Estimar for winning the gold and bronze, respectively.

Our 14 athletes were all unlucky (the 15th will compete today I think in diving?). All sorts of recriminations will follow…finger pointing, etc…sisihan. ..
Suffice it to say that they tried their very best and wanted to come home with
medals, but alas, it was not meant to be. The Philippine is again medal-less.

Been watching the Olympics while reading my email and my heart went out to Tsombee Go when he lost in the Taekwondo. I thought he was winning so napaka sakit talaga. He thought he had more points so he cried for 20 minutes after the verdict was given. I am sure all the other athletes felt the same when they lost. Another chance of glory for the country – and it slipped their fingers.

I’ve also been following Team USA and I like Kobe Bryant. But the amazing man for me is none other than Michael Phelps! I also like gymnast Sharon Johnson for her very pleasant attitude, and of course Liukin. Other amazing performers are Usain Bolt and the Chinese girls in gymnastic and diving. Hope I can watch the closing ceremony.

Dine, I admire you for writing so well, especially the poem you wrote when your grandson died. Lola ka na pala. Sad to say, I do not have much time to open your blog, but I did it once or twice. Keep up the good work and do take care.

    Congratulations!

Hey, at least the athletes there are better than the ones in my country. Sigh.

Even if the sport is an unofficial event, at least the Philippines has its gold and bronze medals.

Counted or not, it’s still a gold medal and it brings glory to the Philippines!

    Wohoo!

I’m surprised that no one has pointed this out in the media yet, but wushu is neither a demonstration nor an exhibition sport at the Beijing Olympics. The wushu competitions is a just a regular tournament organized by the Beijing Organizing Committee of the 29th Olympic Games (BOCOG). There hasn’t been a demonstration or exhibition sport at the Games since 1992 in Barcelona. The IOC is actually intent on cutting down the number of games in the Olympics, so wushu won’t see an appearance at the games anytime soon.

Willy Wang is not a filipino. He is a chinese who happens to have migrated in the RP justust like Yao Ming who plays in the NBA but plays in the chinese team during Beijing Olympics since he is a chinese. The RP made him a filipino citizen when they see his potential before joining in Nan Gun, so the glory must go to China and not to the Philippines. So sad cz RP is claiming something that its not their own. Anyways, china will not be concerned about this issue, she will be generous by donating its extra medals to a poor country who is desperate to have one.
