And so it was that in 3 days, Sexy Mom had her fill—rubbing elbows with technorati and the best of literati.
The Best of Literati
On Thursday afternoon, I went to the Manila International Book Fair in World Trade Center. There I meet with a gracious couple—Greg Brillantes and his wife Lourdes Brillantes. We had lunch together.
Greg, a Palanca Award Hall of Famer and a multi-awarded fictionist, is one of the Philippines’ most popular writers in English. Known for his sophisticated and elegant style, he has been compared to James Joyce
Lourdes is the author of 80 Años del Premio Zobel (80 Years of the Zobel Prize), a compilation of Spanish literature written by Filipinos. She is herself a Zobel Prize winner in 1998, authored the book to reflect the golden age of Philippine literature written in the Spanish language.
Friday afternoon, on the invitation of Isagani Cruz (Palanca Award Hall of Famer, prolific playwright, short-story writer, writing critic, educator, columnist and publisher, I attended the 2006 National Books Award at the Makati Skyline. It was hosted by the Manila Critics Circle.
Saturday evening, on the invitation of Greg Brillantes, I attended the 57th Palanca Awards at the Manila Peninsula Hotel. How nice it was to be amongst the Palanca family, hall of famers, winners, former winners, guests, and sponsors. Secretary Mar Roxas was there to grace the occasion, with Corina Sanchez.
For both occasions, I was very much overwhelmed, to be amongst the best in Philippine Literati. While in the past, I would know these people only as authors, read their literary pieces, their newspaper columns, and on occasions their books, Friday and Saturday nights gave me the chance to meet them in person—shake their hands, cheer for them, chat with them, even have photos with them.
Thanks to Isagani Cruz for inviting me to the National Books Award, Greg Brillantes to the Palanca Awards, and Butch and June Dalisay, for giving me a ride home after the Palanca Awards, so that I did not have to wait for BA, who had a party elsewhere.
And thanks to good friend, Tony Joaquin, who was instrumental to my meeting all these people—he should have also been here to grace these occassions.
Technorati
Right after the National Book Award, I attended a Pinoy Bloggers Dinner at the Marina Seafood Restaurant in Roxas Blvd. It was hosted by Gus Vibal. He thanked the blogging community for helping make WikiPilipinas surge to its high level and to celebrate Filipino victory—in marking the Philippines into the world of encyclopedia. He also spoke of the roots of WikiPilipinas, which is Filipiniana.net.
My observation? Gus Vibal is an obsessed man—obsessed for anything internet, knowledge sharing. He even wants to digitalize novenas, books, etc. Oh well, he has a solid team of staff and volunteers behind him, he has his own resources, and he has the backing of his family’s publishing house. Most of all, he has the drive. He invites everyone to join the Philippine Knowledge Revolution, and learn how to wiki.

Wow!! That was a hectic 3-days!! And to top it all off, you got to meet all these important people.
Is Gus Vibal the son of Ester Vibal?
You wore black to the awards night!!
Amazing! You got to meet with the important people and I’m sure they’ve been pretty much an inspiration to others.

Dear Dine,
I am soo impressed with what you have accomplished as a blogger! More women, especially mothers like you and me, should go into this activity and discover the wonders, joy and fulfillment of blogging!
Mabuhay ka and more power to you!
June
Hi Dine. Thanks for sharing those wonderful highlights. It’s a great opportunity to meet so many interesting and distinguished people.
aba one day, I will be watching you amidst these writers . hehe
Check out http://marroxas2010.blogspot.com
Aba, ang galing! What an honor to be with all those literary greats! I only get to read about those names.
It must be such a wonderful feeling to be in the presence of these famous and great people. And you are already a celebrity yourself, Sexymom.
I have to admit that I am not so familiar with the works of Filipino writers. I am product of educational systems that have preferred the western writers over our local talents. It’s such a shame that I have adapted this kind of preference and prejudice. It is so unjust of me. But I’m thankful that my studies in Ateneo have helped me appreciate the beauty of literature by Filipinos. If everything turns out well, I may be able to enroll in a course on Philippine Lit next semester.
wow, what an impressive array of literary luminaries including you Dine! am happy for what you have accomplished so far.
Congratulations Dine. I am very happy for you that you have found your “world”. Most of us go through life not ever knowing what we really want to do or even be able to do what really makes us fulfilled and happy.
Thanks for posting the pictures and keeping us updated. It’s great to see Butch and Beng Dalisay (Butch was my batchmate at PSHS) and Isagani Cruz was one of our English literature teachers.
Keep writing/blogging.
All the best,
wow
tita!! haha my gosh i’m speechless. i feel so starstruck, even if all i can see are just pictures.
being a lit major, i can’t help but get excited about what lies ahead of me.. i’ve always loved reading and writing, and i also want to have my chance to meet those people. i want to be like those people.
Wow Dine, you are really something. you’ve found another niche which is equally rewarding.
Good Work…
sobrang wow! hehehe
Wow talaga. I feel the same euphoria when I got a personal autograph from Mr. Nick Joaquin, years before he died.
Congrats, Dine! Galing ng blog mo! Thanks for posting our photo with you. And for the pleasure of knowing you. Wish I could be as fast as you are in updating my blog. Wish I could be more adept in posting photos, etc.
Just a short PR here: For all of you out there, check out our book, “Beyond the Great Wall : A Family Journal,” which recently won National Book Award best in biography/autobiography, at the National Bookstore & Powerbooks. It’s not just a story of one family but it also deals with history, art and culture not only of our beloved country but also of our northern neighbor, China. The price of the book is well worth it. And by buying it, you also help fund the activities of the Maningning Miclat Art Foundation, Inc. as all royalties from the book go to MMAFI.
Let me take this opportunity to invite you all to “Maningning: An Evening of Poetry & Music”. The 2007 grand winners of the Trilingual Poetry Competition will be awarded and there will be a concert by Cynthia Alexander, Susan Fernandez & Girl Valencia on Sept. 26, Wed, 7:00 p.m. at Philamlife Theater, UN Avenue. The winner in the Chinese division of Poetry is coming to the Philippines to receive her award of PhP 28,000.00, a sculpture trophy by the eminent sculptress, Julie Lluch, and special limited hardbound edition of Maningning Miclat’s trilingual book of poetry, “Voice from the Underworld,” anthology of poems & essays, “Beauty for Ashes: Remembering Maningning,” and “Beyond the Great Wall” by Mario, Alma, Maningning & Banaue Miclat. Pls. visit http://www.maningning.com & http://maningning.com/blog for details. Once again, please get your tickets and help support the Maningning Miclat Art Foundation and its activities to encourage and promote creativity among the young poets & artists, and recognize, award, and nurture the most outstanding of them.
Maraming salamat at mabuhay kayo!
Dine, thanks a lot & cheers!
Wow, hectic indeed, but I’m sure you were enjoying every moment of it. Who says retirement is boring?! Look at people you meet and the events you’re invited to.
When I retire, I’d like it to be as exciting as yours, Dine.
I’ve received e-mail from my acquaintance with invitation to Harkness Private Foundation investment program, I’m investing since 2002 in different HYIP and small investment projects, and I would like to receive some general feedback from anyone who’ve used HPF’s services, and received payment (s) thanks.
