Mrs. Fields Cookie Cafe and Blog and Soul (Two Launches)

You know how I started my New Year? With a box of Mrs. Fields cookies from daughter, Monica. But wait! I remember she and her siblings ate them all—only whetting my appetite for these wonderful treats. What joy it was when Jayvee announced the invite for Blog and Soul Launch and the Second Coming of Mrs. Fields (21 August, 7 pm at the Manila Pavillon). I immediately signed up. You see, each mall trip is almost always accompanied by a purchase of a box or two of Mrs. Fields cookies and brownies—our dose of sweet indulgence, for which I do not mind spending on.

It was an opportunity, not only to meet members of the blogging community, but also to sample the treats that Mrs. Fields had to offer. After servings of pasta and mini sandwich buns, bite size (though in abundance) of Mrs. Fields cookies and brownies were passed around, including the new additions to their product line—cupcakes, gellato and the rest of the cookie and brownie flavors that are carried in the USA. I must have a sugar overload—that is what Mrs. Fields cookies and brownies are all about—indulgence to the max—not the non-fat, low-calorie, sugar-free treats that are being mass marketed nowadays. A sure treatment to depression, and a sure way to hubby’s heart, who had his indulgence fill for the night.

The young See couple (Gerwyn and Sheryl), master franchisees of Mrs. Fields in the country, has thought of attracting the coffee shop crowd, wth their concept of what is called “Cookie Cafe”. Watch out, Starbuck’s, UCC, Seattle’s Best—a competitor is on the rise! The first Cookie Cafe branch was opened at the Trinoma Mall a few days ago. Other Mrs. Fields branches will slowly follow suit, soon to become cafes, too. I wonder, if they will also provide free WiFi (I forgot to ask). This would sure attract a larger group—those who love the ambience of coffeeshops while working on their laptops.

Hubby, who, less than 20 years ago was a buyer for equipment and supplies for a huge donut chain, and who has for a few years now been involved with dairy, watched with keen eyes, as supplies of orange juice, butter, and pre-mix ingredients were being brought to the cafe. He was impressed—as most of the core ingredients he saw were top quality products sold in the USA. Local supplies, I heard, are welcome though, as long as they pass the set quality standards.

Their line of coffee and beverages seem to be tempting to hubby, though he is yet to sample them (not me, because I do not take coffee). We happily went home, with 2 boxes x 6 cookies, which Alan Jr was so happy to bring home to his siblings (the catch was he gave his siblings 8 pieces, and brought in school the next morning the remaining 4 for his snacks).

Jayvee launched a 3-year program that he calls Blog and Soul

  • a three year movement that aims to establish blogging as a relevant part of Philippine media

  • not an exclusive club or membership-based organization

  • a venue for bloggers to expand their horizons by meeting new people through events organized for the media

  • a venue for bloggers to hone their craft in becoming credible sources of information on the web

  • an opportunity for bloggers with special skills to volunteer time to share their knowledge and expertise with other bloggers

  • a group of people who believe that blogging can be a powerful tool to dedicate convictions, spread goodness, and build community.

Congratulations, Jayvee.

Oh, by the way,  Marcelle Fabie, also known as Kel graciously put on a great show that night. Alan, Jr, a great fan of Marcelle, calls him a magician. But Marcelle is more than a magician. Folks, if you are in need of a good host and mentalist for your events, Marcelle is the answer.
